Found a poor little Penn 155 in the trash at the marina and figured I would save it. The spool was froze up and I figured the problem was someone tried to put mono on a plastic spool and didn't put any backing on and low and behold what do I find, what mono does to a plastic spool. Thanks Lee for the replacement she works like a dream now. Dacron will be in her future.

This is the look at the damage, a lot of times it is in the center of the spool but this one failed on the end.

That's a trophy if you ask me, I like the plastic spools they really zip
I'm glad to see the spool get a new home. Put a bunch of Dacron or Spectra on it so it doesn't blow up like the other one.
It was much appreciated. And the handle arm is great.
William
That Lee has some parts! I wish I would find a reel in the trash. Maybe then I could stay off fleabay.
My son found a really nice Black 4/0 on a St Croix rod sitting on top of a garbage can!
I have a plastic spool I got off Lee for a Super Mariner. How do you think I should spool this bad boy for some catfish?
Pretty cool on you to save that little guy from a undeserved ending.
I just saw the same thing on a 320 gti that came in locked up.... the side of the aluminun spool blew apart and the shaft blew out a hole in the left side plate... total destruction. pretty cool... I didn't have to clean up anything, it went in the trash, easy fix ;D
they hooked a shark, fought it awhile, got it to the boat and BAM ..... no more penn.. my first experience with mono blowing open an aluminum spool.
Shark Hunter I would go with Dacron or braid. And as for the trash thing at the marina I am at on lake Texhoma those people do it all the time. They don't clean them for a few years and just go buy another one, go figure.
I have seen plastic spools do this a lot and have only seen it once on an aluminum spool, factory defect, you could see where there were bubbles in the casting.
We broke a defiance on the pier, have of the max darg and bam AR went out. My friend broke the spool on his with 50lb braid. Blew through the sideplate like the gti
Picked me up a 155 for 20 bucks shipped. The posts are the only thing that looks bad. I will reuse the ones off my Surfmaster 200.
GO NON EXPLODING REELS!!
Ron
Hi Shark Hunter --
If you still need some NOS 155 posts -- instead of taking apart your Surfmaster 200 -- PM me with your mailing information -- and I will send 4 to you.
Also, do you need a stand? I normally upgrade the stock 30-155 to a 30-200 -- if the reel is to be used rather than kept on a shelf -- since the 30-200 will accept a rod clamp, is less apt to twist, etc. I have both -- and can send one to you along with the posts.
Let me know --
All the best,
Fred
Got me a baymaster 180 for cheap too! ;) More non-explosive Ron! ;D
I'm waiting on Newell bars to have mine together, no where near as pretty as yours.
Ron
If you want a better reel, toss that right side plate and replace it with a surfmaster's plate, you will have smoother and stronger gears/drags.
This one was caught by me on a jigmaster with 25lb mono, would you believe my plate never blew up? :-\

ok, i have a stupid question.... I get NIB, OEM, YFT, etc... but what's the meaning of NOS .....
???
New old stock. It means it is the same as NIB only it is for a part that isn't offered. If a store has a 155 sideplate in stock it has been on the shelf for a LONG time but is still new.
Ron
Kinda off topic, but I just realized that Sal caught that shark on a pin rig!
After hours of searching for the right Jigmaster. I came up with this one. A 500M, stainless spool.
There are a ton of jigmasters out there, just finding one I like that was not a frankenreel was tough.
My Criteria was, metal spool, (no three piece) aluminum would be fine, 500, not 500S, (Sorry Ron) Clamp included. That's a job!
It either has no clamp, plastic spool, is a 500S, or it is in bad shape. I paid $55 for this one.
I think I did Ok. She is a Beauty! ::)

New Old Stock - reels or their parts that were not used at all because of various reasons.
I don't get what you're trying to say there Tile :-\.
NOS is simply New Old Sock, a new item from an older stock...that it.
You could have a various reasons for any reels you have sitting on your shelf ::)
Might be using the term NOS improperly -- however for me it just means new parts out of an inventory that have never been used on a reel before.
These could be 10 - 90 years old -- but still in the new parts bin.
The only reason this is important to me in regards of stating NOS -- is that in the case of Penn -- many of the newer parts manufactured in China will fit an old Penn -- but in many cases the metal is not as durable, shiny, well made, or a slightly poor fit.
Many of my old Shakespeare parts from the 20s are NOS, the DAM Quick parts are all NOS, the Mitchell parts are all NOS, so are the Bronsons, OC, etc. -- as well as even the newer Daiwa interior parts and bodies from the 70s & 80s.
Like Bryan sez -- few people realize that we may have parts in stock for years or even decades before we sell them -- if ever.
That is why with the older collector reels, I am generally hesitant to just sell parts without doing the restoration
job myself. One just ends up being a parts storing place for years without any advantage.
Now trading is a different story -- I'm always looking out for things that may benefit both parties in a trade.
And I keep nearly any old reel for parts -- have a 20' storage container full -- not counting what is in the parts bins in the shop.
Just found 2 good Daiwa 900Hs that I think I will upgrade with the good handles, drags, sleeves, etc. -- as Alan and Bryan have described. Great old bulletproof reels when attached to a good rod.
Best,
Fred

I was secretly hoping thats what it really meant.. how cool would that be? ;D ;D
500S on the way with red aluminum spool!
You gonna NOS that sucka ? ;D ;D
;D
My 155 is in sad shape. The stand is bent and there is a crack in the left plate. Thank You for the parts Fred, I'm going to need them. ::)
The 180 is superb! for $20 ;) Even has a stainless spool! Have to take the good with the bad. I'm only in for 20 bucks each. ;)
Is that a 100 stand on that 180? Looks really nice. A tib frame and a couple rings will have the 155 shining like a diamond.
Ron
30-180S on the stand Ron.
Cool,
It just looked like it had more metal in the photo. If your looking to do a simple upgrade the 49 stand is really nice.
Ron
I am venturing into uncharted territory with these smaller Penns. I am a Big Senator Guy, but I can't help myself. There is too much to learn from these pieces of History. ;)

My largest Senators are 114 and 114H but I like to use my Surfmaster 100s and 150s.

You should have enough parts there to put a 10/0 together, well maybe not, you would still need a spool.
The water cutter was talking about getting a multi axis CNC machine yesterday and I told him I had work for it. He needs to relocate to a larger shop first though.
I'm not sure what a multi axis CNC machine is, but its gotta be good for all of us! Maybe I'll get that Shark Handle I've been wanting! :P
My First Jigmaster! finally arrived. 500S with red aluminum spool. $40 bucks shipped. A little crusty, should clean up nice. ;)

What are you planning for the CNC machine? I have a friend with a Hitachi Seiki VA-40 with a z-axis attachment that owes me some favors. In fact networking his CNC machine to his computers, so he could upload cutting files is the big favor he owes me for. I had to learn obscure parts of the EIA-232-D standard to make it work.
I want a standard width topless 349 frame and I know there is some demand for a narrow frames for the larger Senators.
A 349 frame sounds like a great idea (that is my favorite reel). I'll be going by Dave's place tomorrow I'll see what he thinks of the idea. Do you suppose anyone else would want one?
Count me in! ;)

Mine too, I even have a factory left hand one.
me me me :D
Dave is currently between contracts so he has some time to play with this. I gave him a reel and some pictures of examples for what we want. He is a machinist not an engineer so he is a little wary of doing the original CAD. We will see where this goes, hard to say.
Hopefully it goes toward us for some frames! Thanks for trying to make this available Lensters! ;)
Dave can't figure out how to get stock to make these frames so that they would sell for less than $150. Any guidance would be appreciated. Would anyone else be interested in frame spacers like the Jigmasters have or similar to the ones Newell made for Senators?

.
Lensters,
I'm sure Three Se7ens can steer you toward some stock for those frames. He is the Gentleman who is making the new ss stars in the Senator section.
Daron, nice scores on your new little ones.. ;)
I'm learning some stuff on this thread. about factory parts swapping for upgrades
is the 180 spool really stainless steel?
How many models with stainless spools are out there on older Penns?
I'm not 100% sure its stainless Erik. There is a 155 here on the right, with the same spool.
It has that brushed stainless look to it. I also have a Jigmaster with one.
Had some extra time before I had to go in to work today. Figured I would stop by Harbor Freight. My main goal here was to look for a punch like I see in Sal's posts. He has it on a Handle that looks like it was made for a file. No Luck. They have everything else in there, just no Sal Punch! >:(
I picked up a nice little screwdriver set mainly for handle screws, got another pick set, these come in handy getting drags out of a gear when not wanting to take the gear out of the reel. I really use them to pry side plates off of rings that have never been off before. A smaller set of little pliers other than my needle nose that look Gargantuan when working on a Surfmaster or Jigmaster. I only spent 8 bucks! and didn't even have a coupon! ;D I grabbed some punches from the Garage before I headed to work so I can grind them down to fit the sleeve pins that I destroy the smaller punches on. It was a good day! ;D
where's the harbor freight?? I gotta tell my brother. :D
Its on Mall Road in Florence.
