My Narrowed 500 Jigmaster with Newell bars and seat, SS gear sleeve, HT-100's, Penn Power Handle with reel grips and built by Mr. Tani himself, also in the Jigmaster pic is a 155 with Neweels also built by Mr. Tani. The other reel is a Surfmaster 100 also with Newell bars and seat (did the 100's on my own after watching Alan). Both reels see Kayak duty out Half Moon Bay, Santa Cruz, and Bodega/Doran, and Salmon Charter duty from HMB to Bodega. Each year I keep expanding my range. I haven't gotten the nerve up yet to head out much further than a mile offshore in my plastic boat. Some of the Nor Cal folks can get out there, there is something about having a Grey whale or worse sneak up behind you (had it happen once scared the hell out of me).
Very nice. Like those grip additions. Do they glow in the dark too?
Very nice, thanks for posting. Love those handles.

Looking good kmstorm...
Tell more about your reels and the mods done to it. Is it the Newell 99 conversion? Are those handles 24-56 with some kind of rubber sleeve added to it?
You're certainly right about being on the water in a small plastic boat ... a seal scared me when it tried to climb aboard. Good thing I was out with a few of my buddies.

Being in a Kayak I tend to get wet more than some of you. Either from wakes and waves, fish splashing or what ever, it just happens. One day I was screwing around with those reel mates (or whatever they are called) and noticed right off they fit with a little umpf on the bigger Penn handles. They make A gripping it when wet easier, and easier to find in the dark. I kind of wish they did glow in the dark, but they don't.
The Jigmaster has the 99 Narrowed conversion, AT SS Gear Sleeve, 5:1 SS Newell gears in it, not sure I would do that again. The 5:1 seems to high for bottom fishing. I like it for Kayak fishing, but I like the Surfmaster 100 even better. 5 1/2 onces lighter than a stock Jigmaster with a similar gear ratio, and easier to thumb. When you have to paddle your own weight every once counts.
Try to use the 99size for vertical jiging the 5:1 ratio will work good for that.just make sure you have it beefed up.Alan's s.s. gear sleeve and Bryans drag kit would be a nice up grade.I have a 505 99 size and I have all the up grades,I plan to test it as soon as the ocean calms itself.it did fine with the stock gears on some big Aj's but I put in the black pearl gears just for piece of mind.
The Jigmaster has Alans SS gear shaft in it. Lately I have been using a Abu 6501 C3, on a 6 foot Ugly Stick made for bass fishing. Makes rockfish a whole lot more fun with 15lb test
The reelgrips were designed to fit conventional bass reels, it was one of those, "hmmm, I wonder if that would work," moments, and they did. So I have been putting them on ever since. Yes the handles are 24-56's. Mr Tani himself recommended them to me when I met him a the San Mateo Fishing Expo back 2007 (I think it was 2007). Even then, Alan had a faithful following, he was doing a special $5 reel cleaning, and people were coming in with bags of reels. I felt for the guy! He had reels all over the place and parts everywhere. He asked me then if he could take mine home to work on he was getting back logged. I said sure.
Five$ :o
Yes indeed $5 for the show only.
