Title: LOS CABOS TUNA JACKPOT TOURNAMENT NOV. 7-8 TEAM No. 11
Post by: Dominick on October 13, 2013, 10:00:54 PM
Hi all you AT members I will be fishing this tournament next month.  Here is a fishing report from our boat:

http://www.bdoutdoors.com/forums/showthread.php/517633-RedHot-Sportfishing-Cabo-Report

http://www.redhotcabofishing.com/  This is more info on our boat.

I will be fishing with two of my friends.  Joe from N.J. and John from RWC CA.  We will be a 3 man team this year (I invited several friends but they could not commit).  There might be a live feed from the pier at Cabo San Lucas.  That information can be found at http://www.loscabostunajackpot.com/ There are 2 tournaments put on by Bisbee before the tuna tournament.  They will have a live feed so you can see the fish being weighed in.  They also have real time hook-ups if you know anyone in these tournaments.  Google Bisbee tournaments for the links.  We are in tuna, dorado and wahoo categories.  I am very excited to go again.  This is the 3rd year and it is great fun.  A report and photos when I return.  Dominick

Dominick, I want to wish you luck. I know you have a good crew. I hope "the fish" that puts you in the money decides to give you a chance. I wish I could be there to observe. I would also be willing to remove any hooks you may get in your hide.  ;)  I would also do this free of charge as long as I could tape it.  ;D

Hi everyone.  I just thought I would BUMP this thread.  I'm leaving in 7 days.  There is no need to comment unless you want to.  Use the information in the beginning of the thread to follow the progress next week.  The Bisbee Black and Blue which just ended had live video feed from the weigh station.  The second place winner with a 535lb Blue Marlin won $1.5MM, and the first place winner with 774lb won $368K.  See this link. Well we are enjoying the great weather down here although the fishing is slow.  The big winner was a 192.4 YFT for a grand total of $242,960.  We caught 5 tuna on the first day, none bigger than 25lbs. 30lbs is a qualifying tuna.  We did not make the board.  Within the last hour of the tournament we hooked into a Blue Marlin which was fought for 55 minutes by my fishing buddy Joe from New Jersey.  Since this is a tuna tournament we consider marlin by-catch.  Dominick

The results are here.  http://www.wonews.com/Blog.aspx?id=2485&AuthorID=59052&t=Final standings for The 15th annual WON/Yamaha Los Cabos Tuna

Not even getting on the board has to suck.
But fishing in the Tourney, heck, fishing period, has to be better than working. ;)

Absolutely used the Tank.  It caught at least one of the tuna.  It would have been nice to have had the Marlin hit that rod but it was after 3:00 p.m. and with 80lb line the Marlin would have had to be finessed in.  It took 55 minutes with a Penn International 50 and 100lb line.  The Marlin was still a little green when we got it to the boat and Joe was tiring, but we let it run again to tire it out.  Despite our usual catch and release we all wanted some Marlin meat so we kept it.  I have a cooler full of Marlin and Tuna. It would have taken more time with the Tank.  Dominick

Don't get too excited Sal. In Baja "manana" doesn't translate into tomorrow, it just means "not today".  ;D ;)

Okay everyone.  Here are the photos I promised.  We did not catch a qualifying tuna (30lbs.).  I am a pretty lucky guy in that I get to have my wife and grandchildren on my vacation.  Here is Olivia experiencing her first fresh coconut water.  She didn't care for it much.

Introducing Sophia, Olivia and my wife Linda at the snack palapa having an ice cream cone.

The day before the tournament we went to register and sign the waivers.  We stowed the goody bags we received and went to Solomon's Landing for a cerveza and margarita.  That is Joe Licata from New Jersey and Susan Bagis from Redwood City (John Bagis' wife) and yours truly from left to right.  I am not going to wear that shirt anymore, it makes me look fat.
(http://i1220.photobucket.com/albums/dd459/lmdl4law/CABO%20TOURNEY%202013/P1000632_zpsa034c3a8.jpg) (http://s1220.photobucket.com/user/lmdl4law/media/CABO%20TOURNEY%202013/P1000632_zpsa034c3a8.jpg.html)
Introducing John Bagis, the third member of our team.  We decided to go with a 3 man team.

Opening morning it was overcast.  The overcast lasted on and off all day.
(http://i1220.photobucket.com/albums/dd459/lmdl4law/CABO%20TOURNEY%202013/P1000640_zps532ce084.jpg) (http://s1220.photobucket.com/user/lmdl4law/media/CABO%20TOURNEY%202013/P1000640_zps532ce084.jpg.html)
Here I am all dressed up for the ball.  Notice this shirt does not make me look fat.  Also notice my Penn International 50 VSW.  I caught one small tuna with it. All I did was crank and brought the fish to the boat.  That's how small the tuna were.
(http://i1220.photobucket.com/albums/dd459/lmdl4law/CABO%20TOURNEY%202013/P1000647_zps57703c19.jpg) (http://s1220.photobucket.com/user/lmdl4law/media/CABO%20TOURNEY%202013/P1000647_zps57703c19.jpg.html)
Here is Joe directing traffic or holding the rocks apart.  Doesn't matter look at the smile on his face, we were having a good time.
(http://i1220.photobucket.com/albums/dd459/lmdl4law/CABO%20TOURNEY%202013/P1000649_zps2965d4e0.jpg) (http://s1220.photobucket.com/user/lmdl4law/media/CABO%20TOURNEY%202013/P1000649_zps2965d4e0.jpg.html)
Our boat was a 29' Blackfin, the El Bandito.  Introducing the mate, Carlos on the left and Capitano Yanitizio on the right.  Both worked very hard to put us on to fish.
(http://i1220.photobucket.com/albums/dd459/lmdl4law/CABO%20TOURNEY%202013/P1000650_zps9feb9eee.jpg) (http://s1220.photobucket.com/user/lmdl4law/media/CABO%20TOURNEY%202013/P1000650_zps9feb9eee.jpg.html)
7:00 a.m. on opening day.  This video almost captures the roar of a 133 boats racing off to their favorite fishing spots.  This rush to glory is very exciting.
(http://i1220.photobucket.com/albums/dd459/lmdl4law/CABO%20TOURNEY%202013/th_P1000661_zps26b3da0b.jpg) (http://i1220.photobucket.com/albums/dd459/lmdl4law/CABO%20TOURNEY%202013/P1000661_zps26b3da0b.mp4)
This report would not pique the interest of AT members if there were no photos of fishing equipment.  That's the "Tank" front and center of the picture.
(http://i1220.photobucket.com/albums/dd459/lmdl4law/CABO%20TOURNEY%202013/P1000680_zpse9c7cad3.jpg) (http://s1220.photobucket.com/user/lmdl4law/media/CABO%20TOURNEY%202013/P1000680_zpse9c7cad3.jpg.html)
I do not have photos of the Tuna.  For the record we caught 5 or 6 small tuna largest was maybe 20lbs.  They went right into the cooler and I did not have my camera handy when they were filleted on the back of the boat.
At about 2:00 p.m. on the second day of the tournament Joe hooked into a Blue Marlin.
(http://i1220.photobucket.com/albums/dd459/lmdl4law/CABO%20TOURNEY%202013/P1000664_zpse73e7d30.jpg) (http://s1220.photobucket.com/user/lmdl4law/media/CABO%20TOURNEY%202013/P1000664_zpse73e7d30.jpg.html)
After a 55 minute battle the fish was brought to the boat.  We usually catch and release, but we had not had Marlin meat for a long time so we harvested this fish.  The following photos are of the Marlin.  The Marlin was so big it did not fit across an 8' beam.  We estimate it to be 300 plus lbs.  Since this was a Tuna tournament no one wanted to hook into a Marlin.  Marlin are by-catch in a Tuna tournament.

Good not great.  I took them out of school for a week.  What you don't see is they had to do school work each day and write a daily log of their activities.  The work needed to be turned in when they returned.  They are great kids.  They did the school work without a word.  I am blessed.  Dominick
