Hello all,
Looking to upgrade drags in my old Daiwa g4000 spinner. The spinner has 2 bb's in the spool with a massave thick spring between the two bb that loads the drag system in this front drag design. There's a smaller felt washer in a recess in the spool and a large white teflon drag washer that goes against a large metal washer on the bottom of the spool. Im not familiar with Teflon disc used as a drag material. Will replacing the drags with CF drags be better than using the felt/Teflon drags?
Leo
always go with greased carbon fiber!!!!!! ;D
I realize this is a really old post but I would like to talk with the originator or anyone else familiar with this reel (Daiwa G4000 Power Disc spinning reel) or the Daiwa BW4000 spinning reel.
Thx
if you will measure the stock drag washers, you should be able to match them up to something from smoothdrag.com or mysticparts.com

Thanks Alan. I already replaced the oiled felt drag washer with a CF. I just wanted to find out if he knew when they were made, how he was using it, how it held up under his useage.
It came in a bundle of 8 reels and a dozen rods for $100 that the guy would not split up. There were only three reels I wanted. Penns - 49, 309, 712Z. All fresh water reels - I love finding them. Everything was filthy, only the Penns functioned. I was on the verge of tossing everything else but this Daiwa G4000, graphite body and rotor, gold alum spool, resembled a second/third gen Spinfisher so I decided to clean it up. There is nothing on the web that I could find other than it shares the body with the BW4000. So it's all cleaned, lubed, looking good. Pinion bearing is rough and it's $9, already put a $5 Smooth Drag washer in it. Not sure I want to spend any more on a reel I'll never use that I can't sell for what I have into it. It has a slammer type drag with one 30mmx13mmx1mm CF and one 31mmx9mmx1mm teflon riding against SS metals. The spool is alum, upper and lower shielded ball bearings, 250/15# capacity. Now if I could use it for carp or catfishing instead of my SW tackle........?
When I finally got the bundle untangled, unseen in the middle was an Ambassadeur 5600C. It's bound up of course. I've never seen anyone fishing an Ambassadeur of any size. What is this one for?
Daiwa G 4000 is close to BG 4000 but it had a better drag ,they call power drag . It have 3 ball bearings but only 1 in handle ,1 in rotor and 1 in spool .with more dish drag I don't think it needed to up grade drag in this reel,it's more than the shaft can handle or you get a bent shaft
Actually the reel has 4 bearings - left side of main gear, pinion, upper and lower bearings in spool. Looks like a 5th bearing could replace a plastic bushing that's on the right side of the main gear. Graphite body and rotor, nice gold anodized spool with Penn Slammer type drag system. Very big and heavy for a 4000 reel. That's why I thought it might be good for catfish or carp. The drag does look as if it could overpower the axle shaft. Spool oscillation is by arm riding on main gear eccentric, A/R is by ratchet on pinion shaft, lever on rear disables A/R to back peddle. Metal parts don't look salt friendly.
Looks like it was part of a graphite three reel series G2600, G4000, G7000.
G4000 4.3:1 14/250 17/220 25/140

You're correct I just write as I remember ,have not use for long time . That is the most powerful drag and very smooth the way it is .If you sell for 13 I take it

I sent a PM to you.
Love to see a picture of this drag system. 2-spool ball bearings with a Teflon washer and a felt washer...? And a strong spring...?

I will post pictures these drag tomorrow
I got this reel from a friend he loved fishing for carp in exchange for a carp spot that I never catch any carp under 10 lbs .He said it's the best carp reel .To me every reel can be carp reel . Start out with 300 A and lost many fish with this, spool jump out of reel sometime then I switch to 306 ,no carp get away .
When moved to Texas , I caught my first King Mackerel on this reel with 20 Lbs test mono ,the drag is so smooth and strong that the fish almost die when landed . Now I got another one from OhReely
The G4000 is so heavy compare to other 4000 size reel .Compere to Dam Quick 4000 even spool is smaller , Its much heavier . The body about same weight but G4000 spool much heavier than Quick 4000 spool .
If look at from top the 2 spools have about same size drag but under spool G4000 have a huge teflon dish ,then open under spool there are several big drag washer ,2 ball bearing and strong spring .Note : the carbon washer was install by OhReely ,was a felt washer there
Very interesting. Thanks for the pictures q.t. So, it works more powerfully than the BG, how is the "start-up"(possible stickiness when first pulling drag)? I'd imagine close to zero cause of the ball bearings.
Interesting, what is the benefit of having bearings there? Just to smooth out the drag somewhat?
Drag start up very light G-fish .The 2 bearings compress a heavy spring help smooth drag ,more consistent without jerking
The drag adjustment consists of :
drag knob
keyed washer
bearing
flat washer
spring
flat washer
bearing
large (29mm) keyed washer/pressure plate with raised center
Large (29mm) friction washer originally oiled felt
Large (29mm) pressure plate attached to spool (three ears and screws)
All of the drag pressure is borne by the center of the bearings through the keyed and flat washers. Smooth startup, stable spool.
The drag clicker gear is about 29mm with several keyed aluminum washers (spacers I presume) and a 29mm teflon washer on top which is against the pressure plate on the bottom of the spool when the spool is in place.
Quang,
I enclosed the original felt washer in the box in case you wanted it. The thing I didn't like about the oiled felt is if it's over-oiled all that drag pressure squeezes oil out which runs down onto the teflon washer.
I put the felt washer back and remove the carbon washer also replace rotor bearing
That's good. We both knew the bearing was noisey. That's why the reel was free to you. If you don't want the cf washer please mail it back it's unused and came from one of my other reel projects.
