Ive been working on suping up my 6000. I have noticed onmy newer the brass spool pinion has a pplastic piece it rids in and my ilder one does not. There seems to be alot of play on the older pinion. Any help would be great

You mean this kind of pinion?

(http://i.ebayimg.com/t/Vintage-ABU-GARCIA-REEL-PART-Ambassadeur-5000-6000-Older-Style-Pinion-Gear-/00/s/MTIwMFgxNjAw/z/r6UAAOxySy9SSeOx/$(KGrHqIOKp0FJFIhw(PDBSSeO)B!BQ~~60_12.JPG)

And the older reel is missing that white "collar"?

Originally the collar may or may not have been there.
You could try to find schematics of the reel in question and check from there.

I may be wrong, but I believe that plastic ring on the pinion was only used on high speed models.  I agree with checking your schematic.
