Where? We get lots of shark bites here in Volusia County, Florida, but they're typically cases of "mistaken identity". Small sharks expecting to get a bait fish, instead ending up with a wayward hand or foot.
The attack took place on the Southern Coast of Western Australia

The waters the safest place to be...We loose more people to snake and spider bites every year than we do to sharks :) :) :)

yeah, and you can throw stuff at the sharks -- like box jellies, blue-ringed octopi, cone snails & stonefish... oh wait, those little bastards will make you writhe in Hellfire agony, while you wish that a shark would come along & kill you more quickly
lovely fauna you have, down under. if I ever visit, forget swimming -- I'm staying on solid concrete, awake the whole time, with a flamethrower in each hand

You can always go up North........Bugger all sharks up there. The Crocs have cleaned most of them up :) :)
up North it is, then -- at least I'd have a tiny fightin' chance to jump on its head & duct-tape its mouth... it's the small, well-camouflaged SOB's & the phrase "no anti-venom" that scare the crap out of me
I'm glad I waded half the circumference of Garden Island BEFORE I read this. Might have to think about it now. Casting to skippies in that clear water is hard to beat though.

I just erased Australia off of my bucket list. I'd rather visit East L.A. :o It's safer then Australia. Dominick

well, NO!!! you'd pay for a pair, but could only use one... so, in effect, you'd be paying DOUBLE -- where's this "bright side" ???
however scary & lethal, sharks & crocs are BIG -- YOU CAN SEE THEM & hide behind the fat guy, swim faster, splash less... I'd be more afraid of
The 6 Deadliest Creatures (That Can Fit In Your Shoe) http://www.cracked.com/article_16868_the-6-deadliest-creatures-that-can-fit-in-your-shoe.html
...note how Australia boasts 3 in marine shallows, while all of Africa & S. America contribute 3 terrestrials
haha philo

Used to take a pair of swimming goggles out surfing small days in Hawaii, until I saw a massive shark...
Stopped taking the goggles after that ;)
In nearly 30 years of surfing, been 'nudged' once, chased in a couple of times and circled a few more.
Still reckon it's more dangerous to drive a car (or walk through a cane field in Oz) :D
it surprises me there are not more surfers taken
black body suits, flippers, and they bob up and down like seals
i was working with a surveyor up in nth qld and stood on
a taipan.as luck had it i stood on the neck and he wrapped his body around my leg.
i was used to snakes but this bloke put the wind up me.ive seen a couple of blokes that have been bitten.
still dont know if there is anti-venom for tiapans
And another one was taken today....An 11yr old kid was out on his body board with his mates about 100m off shore when he was attacked and killed. The shark took both his legs. This one happened about 300 miles Nth of Sydney near Coffs Harbour :( :( :(
i cant find anything funny to say about that
Me neither. That's Terrible. :-\

Very sad; my sympathy for his friends and family. We get lots of shark bites here, but they're not "shark attacks".

Never said it was. They're sad faces Wal....Initial radio reports gave his age as 11yrs but was later corrected to 19yrs. Turned out to be a 3m Tiger Shark......Very rare to hear of a Tiger be blamed for an attack in Aust waters. They normally put them down to Bull Sharks That far Nth
hi mr gumpy
i was referring to myself not you mr gumpy
i seen the sad faces.
cheers
