Title: penn112h
Post by: jamesnashtonbrady on December 12, 2013, 03:35:35 AM
So I scored and got this reel for 5 bucks. I want to start building it. I want to do everything to this reel posable. I already plan to do ss gears and sleeve. Depending if I want to go with a three stack or five stack drag. Going to do a double dog and a tib frame.  Also doing a power handle. What eles can I do to make this this bullet proof and were can I get a 3 or 5 stack drag with the under gear washer not being carbon fiber.  Thanks for all the help guys.

What Tib kit do you plan to get?
Bryan Young sells the 5 +1 Drag stack. Lee sells the hex main gear insert to change to a versa-drag system. I would recommend a stainless yoke and upgraded bearings. If the reel did not come with an aluminum spool then I would consider that assuming you are casting it.

No bearings in the 112H. Lots of options for hot rodding one. Black Pearl stainless yoke and bridge plate will be out soon.

Width, the narrow is Jigmaster 501 width, the T3 is Jigmaster 500 width.  The price difference is because the narrow is a kit and it comes with a spool.  I have a 99 width Tib 112H frame I'm slowly gathering parts to finish.

Lee, am I correct in thinking the 99 width is right between the 500 & 501 ? like splitting the difference?
I never have been 100% sure about the 99 width.
Thanks!

I thought the 99 and the 66 were the same width? The 112H uses a 66 stand, so wouldn't a regular 112H be 99 width?

Yes, you're right Ron, but that wasn't the question. ;)

Erik, here are some dimensions
501-1 5/8"
  99-2 1/8"
500-2 1/2"
The 99 is 3/8" wider than the 501 and 3/8" narrower than the 500.

I think it's really cool how a lot of the reel parts interchange. There's a lot of knowledge on this forum.

I must have a widened 112H because it has a 30-200 stand, Newell bars and spool.  I'll dig around and see if I can find a 29L-112H spool.

Lee, you have something special, yours is a Bluefin Special.
Those are valuable, but you'll need the Newell stand.
Here is one for sale, same as yours:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/Penn-112H-Senator-Newell-Tuna-Special-Reel-2-7-16-inches-wide-Made-in-USA-/141135802950
Newell must call it a Tuna Special, Tiburon calls it a T3 BFS Bluefin special.

The spool and bars on mine are redish.

I've never seen redish, some of my penn aluminum spools are almost brown from black:-\.
Could you show me a picture? I might have a newell base for that reel, but it's the type that doesn't take the rod clamp. Mine is black though, but I need to find it...if I didn't get rid of it already :-\.

I'll get some photos and try to use my wife's computer to upload them, the USB ports on my POS are not working.

Lee, I'm not sure but that one looks like it has been painted. I did find the newell stand, it measures 2.434", please confirm if it's the same as yours and I'll send it out.

Will do, now I will have to round up parts for 2 112H but they are a good size reel for most of my fishing.

Newell made 2 wide 112Hs. The Tuna special and the BFS. The Tunas special is about the width of a 113H and the BFS is about the width of a Newell Marlin Special, which is between a 113H and a 113HW or Black Marlin Special.  I have, and love, a Tuna Special and a Marlin Special. The guy on ebay who selld the T3NK kits is now selling a T3BFSK kit that he convinced Tiburon to do. I am praying that I can get the cash before he sells out.

Sal,
This is why I asked if Lees new inserts could fit 5 Hex gears. The BFS has got to hold about as much line as a 4/0 and the narrower spool works the fish harder.

Thanks for the information Ron, I thought they were calling them differently.
I've noticed you know a lot about many reels, one day I would like to see a picture of your collection. ;D
Thanks buddy! ;)

I have a photo of the Tuna special on here somewhere. The Navy has had me all over and so my reels are everywhere. Some in So Cal where I grew up, some in Washington and some here in Oahu. John sent me some rings for my Marlin Special (THANKS JOHN!!) so I'll have that together this week. I'm really jazzed about this reel, it has 2 of Lee's dogs, a stainless sleeve, Alan's 4:1 gears and a Newell kit (obviously.) It has a 5+1 carbontex stack now but as soon as Lee gets his insert kit together that is going in. I can't wait to break it in with Alan in Mexico in June!!
