Hi Alan, I have stumbled across a little prob with my narrow 50 reel project.
I am using the posts and reel seat from a 20 witch works great.
when i go to change the pinion gear and main gear penn shows the main gear
for a 20 the same as a 50 yet the gear ratios are diff 20=3:5-1 50=3:0-1
so how can the gears be the same ? pt # 5-50 I looked up and ordered all
my parts from Scott's.
If they have the same main and pinon gear, they will have the same gear ratio. Period. There is no way around it. There must be a typo.
it might be possible to use the the same main gear and still have two different pinion gears. this one is beyond my pay grade.
Isn't the pinion gear larger in diameter on the 50 than it is on the 20? If so that would explain the difference.
Pinion looks the same dia. but i am going to check it with my digital dial calipers.
also going to count the teeth on each.
Counting teeth is the best way to determine ratios. Divide the number of teeth in the main gear by the number of teeth in the pinion gear and you will have the ratio. It will work for any gear combination.
Spacing distance between the two gear shafts to have the teeth mesh properly is another issue.
Good luck. :-X
The Penn 320 and 330 have the same main gear but different pinion gears and thus different gear ratios -- 4.5 to 1 for the 320 and 3.6 to 1 for the 330.
