Title: Upgrades
Post by: skipjackrobert on January 16, 2014, 04:35:11 AM
Hello folks:  I have 1 avet and got from a friend.  It is an JX single speed and will be used with spectra and short 40 lb leader.  Are there any upgrades Alan can do to this reel?  Drags etc.?  Also, can a lower or higher gear ratio be put in without much expense?  I have all shimano and new okuma but have always wanted to try an avet.  Any thoughts would be appreciated and thank you in advance!

Regards,

Skipjack robert in so cal

The best "upgrade" is to grease the drag.  The last time I looked the gear ratio was not changeable.

yeah, that and to go through the bearings.  i've had to service reels that had six bad bearings.

Oh yea!  Thank u for the quick response!  One other question?  Will I experience any binding with yellowtail on that reel?  I don't plan to overfish it as far as drags....

Thank you again.  Robert

The JX is more than enough reel for YT, here's one I caught on a MX.
