Title: Trying to Identify a Reel
Post by: pbmang on January 30, 2014, 03:28:39 PM
Hey guys,

I recently had someone sell a rod and reel to me for $5.  I figure the rod alone was worth way more than that, and the reel is pretty cool/antique looking, so why not.   ;D

The problem is, I have no idea what kind of reel it is.  The only markings I can really find is on the side that says "Point 770."  I looked around on Google, but couldn't find much, so I was wondering if you guys had any idea what I've got here?

Thanks for all your help!
Chris

Look at the reel foot. It should say Japan.

Do you know much about the reel?  Now that it's from Japan, it's very intriguing...haha

I bought a point reel  it a while back in a yardsale box of old mitchell reels
but it looked like a mitchell 306,most parts interchanged with mitchell
Had japan stamped on the foot also.I think its still in my shed.

Not really, I just know Japan reels are usually good quality. The one you have is pretty rare. I can't find any other information on it. I just know points are Japanese.

Hi  Pbmang,

This was made in Japan in the 60s. It was imported under several brand names.  One brand "Roddy" was the most popular.  They were trying to compete with the old Mitchell 302  SW.  However, the quality of  Japanese reels in those days was less than poor.

IDK about the old Roddy reels, but the old Roddy Rod were beast. The new ones Penn has let deteriorate but if you can find an old one GRAB IT. They make killer Cobia and King Mackeral Rods when paired up with a Penn 704, 706, Mitchell 302, 402.
