Mike's Reel, and myself use these "bearing basher" tools to re-affix IAR bosses back to the side plate. Agressive hooksets will loosen, or tear the boss right off the side plate. In some markets, side plates may or may not be spendy. In other markets, and/or specialty plates, can run upwards of 40.00 USD, both in America, and elsewhere...currency variants, taxes, shipping, yada.
In a repair scenario, the tool pays for itself quickly, depending on what the tech puts down for the fix. I advise the sport a new sideplate will run about X amount of dollars, and take 8 days to get here, I'll make it 10 for the permanant fix, and have you out the door in 15 minutes, & then let the rodster make the choice.

also maybe a good project for cortez conversions.
I have this tooling... and thought maybe there would be interest for the same as, for folks here. I'll send keta measurements, so he can do up some, if there's enough interest out there. Cheers, Ken.
Great idea Ken ! Seems like a handy tool :) . What material are you thinking of ?
Mine is prob. made from ordinary mild steel. The base plate is merchant bar, holding a cup made from I suspect a piece of hot roll, and the striker is prob. cold rolled. Mike and I call them "bearing bashers".
As per mine above, in markets where side plates are not spendy, one could just buy a new one, but in places where availability and cost are at issue, repair is a good option.
What ever came of this tool project?
Id be interested in producing them. Can you get any close up pics?
