The Gulf Coast is nice! Emerald White Sand, Nice Clean Beaches and some Awesome Sharkin'!
Alan, You and Dominick need to bring your wives and "Come on Down".
I have been on Beaches all across the country and Overseas as well. There is nothing like the Gulf.
It is Spectacular! Once you go, nothing else will quite do. :P

I'll admit it is pretty over their, but I don't know guys. Any of you ever been to Lanai? Or how about Fujairah‎ in the UAE. I am a Pacific coast boy died in the wool and think that Baja or central California has got to be the best, but the world has some awesome beaches.

Yes Ron, I have been to Lanai, one of my favorite place. I didn't do any fishing there, but lots of horseback riding. I was there in 1996 and there were only two resorts on the island, I stayed at The Lodge of Koele. I'm sure it changed by now, I hope not.

I am already committed to that week Bob. We went the second week of May Last Year and it was still a little Chilly. Hopefully we will be able to find a remote spot.

Ok Men.
I can see Bunnlevel and Doc coming. I wait for this an entire year. I am staying in Fort Walton and will be putting some Sharks on the Sand, regardless. I have the gear and know how to make this Happen. There is an event that was unexpected going on in Pensacola Memorial day week. It is Gay pride week. I am not prejudice nor am I ridiculing this. I just know I have worked way too hard for this to let anything stand in my way. Bob (Cone) has offered his services as a ferry boat to a private spot away from any crowds. Chris is familiar with the area as am I. This is going to be a Blast!
Anyone that wants to feel the power of Catching an Apex Predator. This is your Chance! ;)

The spot Cone is willing to take us over to if I am not mistaken is Fort McRee. It is a Killer spot for sharks, so much in fact it is the meeting ground and home base for our local shark tournament here in the panhandle.
Title: Re: Alan Tani Shark Week
Post by: Shark Hunter on February 26, 2014, 10:23:28 AM
Thats the spot Chris.  FT. McCrey. Only accessible by boat. Anywhere on that tip around Fort Pickens is prime Sharkin' ground. I look forward to meeting Bob, but the ferry thing might be a little much with all the gear and the kayak. We are going to have a blast! ;)
Title: Re: Alan Tani Shark Week
Post by: Chris Gatorfan on February 26, 2014, 12:27:53 PM
that is a killer spot....That BTW is the prime hangout for most of our Hammers and Makos...So we could encounter a true beast.

Hi Guys,

I'd happily throw an invitation on the table for the 'Alan Tani Annual Shark Comp' to be held in Namibia, we get Bronzies, Sevengills, Spotted Gully and Smoothhounds.

The one drawback might be getting your kayaks freighted across, or you might have to learn to cast baits???? We have seen some guys here trying out the little radio controlled boats that take the bait out then dump it at distance. Just as well we don't have Great Whites, the little boats would make a tasty snack!!!

Be alright for the guys 'down under', as a lot of the species are similar, though our Spotted Gully sharks are different, and the Smoothhounds are almost identical to their 'Gummies'

Having thrown it open, it might mean that we all have to go to Australia for the next event after that, the only excuse will be if you are tied up in the bankruptcy courts. Flying around the world to fish shark competitions could get expensive.

Cheers from sunny Africa

Jeri

Fort Mcree woul be da'bomb!  8)  I'd happily chip in for fuel for Cone's ferry service.
IIRC, that is one of the few national parks where primitive camping is allowed on the beach.
And it would sure be nice to be away from the zombie apocalypse that Memorial Day weekend is on Pensacola beaches.
I honestly don't think you could 'safely' fish in the area Chris linked on that weekend.
There are also lots of good places on Fort Pickens, heck good places abound in the Panhandle.

I don't know if the cobia run extends that long, but if that's the case then we won't be able to do long drops without risking cutoffs. There's going to be a lot of boats running the beaches.

I sailed a friend'a cal over there a while back and spent a day exploring.  It's a beautiful island w/ lots of cooler upland upper forest type habitat.  The quaint, quiet town has a layer-back feel, and there are some nice remote beaches.  We free dove the fringe reef, which was much healthier then I've seen on the other MHIs, and anchored up just offshore overnight where I filled a bucket w/menpache, and caught and released a few nice sharks (grey reef and white-tip reef).  Federel land management and public access is kinda up in the air right now with the recent privatization of much of the island.  The seabird survey and rehab projects are on hold.  Also, it remains to be seen what impacts, if any the sale of the island might have on the little known excellent pay-per-gun upland bird hunting, sporting clay range, and public access to the excellent Axis deer hunting (bow or gun seasons).  I've been meaning to try to plan a trip back there to do sum bow hunting.

Woohoo!
Just had vacation time confirmed by the boss  ;)
I've the 21st, 22nd & 23rd open for fishing and plan on booking a hotel room in P'cola.
Already chomping at the bit, its hard to find people to shark with.
I would love to find a place to get some evening/night fishing in, Ft. Pickens is $30.00+$8.00(Entrance fee) for a Night Owl pass, too rich for my blood.
I hope the weather is great.

The bite on Gulf Shores Pier is "On Fire", Specks, Pomps & Flounder in the shallows, Kings and sharks further out.
They sit in between three passes, Mobile Bay, Little Lagoon and Peridido, and the water is already not bad.
Visibilty 2-3', high tidal flow and warm sun is obviously making the fish hungry.
Yesterday, one guy had a Sheepshead head on a rope and was playing with the sharks.

I've no doubt that we will putting Sharks on the Sand.
Barring a hurricane, it will only get better as the water warms and more bait moves inshore.

That sounds like fun!

It's good to hear that the water's clearing up. I was kind of discouraged after reading a prediction on the Sharks on the Sand site that we were going to have weeks of low salinity, low visibility conditions. I ran into the aftermath of flooding in north Florida when I took a week off to go scalloping a few years ago. No fun (literally).

I have been making some last minute preparations. I acquired this fancy Pelican case. It will hold my backup 12 and 14/0 double dogged, stainless sleeved Reels, Gangsta style! ;)
I made a trip to my local Field and Stream and bought me a nice ugly stick for my Surfmaster 200.

I've a problem...  I worry too much sometimes.

What to do with yak when parked at hotel?
My choices are limited since I'm have to use my Choice Rewards points, and none of them have exterior doors opening on the parking lot, so I can't get the yak in the room.
And I'm leery as all hell about it being stolen or vandalized atop the car.
Yeah, I can run a small cable through the scuppers and lock it up.  But I'm still concerned about it.

Title: Re: Alan Tani Shark Week
Post by: Shark Hunter on May 09, 2014, 05:33:01 AM
I have a solution to your problem John. Leave your Yak at Home. I have an Ocean Kayak Trident 13 that I have never even paddled. My Son will be with me. Me and you can sit in our Beach Chairs and drink some Suds while my Boy Yaks our baits out. I have a yakking self service bro! I get so intense on my rods that I don't want to leave them. My brother will be there as well, He just bought a Brand spanking new Prowler big Game. I got it covered. I look forward to hooking up. I will have an entourage with Me.
Our job is to Bring the Beast to Shore, Tag, Release, Celebrate! Do it again! ;)

I understand the desire to bring all of your own gear. After all, if we weren't tackle junkies we wouldn't be on this site. Still, I don't think we'll need three kayaks.
Title: Re: Alan Tani Shark Week
Post by: Chris Gatorfan on May 09, 2014, 01:09:47 PM
Having more Kayaks allows for faster bait deployment which = more fishing time for everyone....
Depending on the waves It can take as little as 2 minutes and up to around 10-15 minutes to drop a bait.
Title: Re: Alan Tani Shark Week
Post by: Shark Hunter on May 09, 2014, 05:07:50 PM
Yes,
But in John's Situation, I think He will sleep a lot better. Stuff gets stolen all the time. Usually where I stay will be gated with Security. I still run a steel cable through the scuppers and around the roof rack.

Water is still rather muddy in parts from the flooding but this fish bite has been wide open. We caught a total of 15 two weeks ago. Water should just about be perfect by the time everyone gets here. My dad is coming in also from Tallahassee so hopefully we can get him on his first big shark also. The big boys have been in close this year so far.

So, who's meeting who, when & where, any plans yet?
We've Daron & Crew, Doc, Chris, Bob(?), myself & son and I've a couple of people who say they might show Thur/Fri.

Anybody for doing a general invitation on SOS, or maybe at least invite our Admins?
Already sounds like we'll need a good stretch of beach to ourselves to space line sets out.

I'll most likely be at Chicken Bone sometime Wednesday by noon, plan on fishing till well after dark.
Repeat performances on Thursday & Friday.
Red bearded, fat man with a 8yr'ol knucklehead son, and too much gear.

I'll have my netbook with me in my Condo John. Believe it or not. I don't own a cell phone. When I get down on Monday, I'll give you my Son's phone #. He will be with me if we are fishing. We can just plan on meeting at Chicken bone. You know what my Truck looks like. It has Penn and Shark Stickers on the back window. I will always be within sight of it.

I travel next Thursday, and will be in Crestview resting up on Friday. I know, it sounds strange to plan on a day of doing nothing, but I'm going to be at the end of a 60-70 hour work week by Thursday. I'll know more about my schedule for the week as it gets closer.

I'm staying with friends that I only see every few years, so I'll be spending some time with them.  Gene's the best fishing partner I've ever known, so I might bring him along.

I don't know about the fish heads. The hoped-for source for them is a kayak fisherman. The last time I checked, the weather hadn't been good enough for him to get out. I'll check with Gene soon, there may be other options. Maybe I'll hit the charter docks on Friday.

The charter docks will work. We get our bait there sometimes...
so far tonight, 3 runs with hook missing bites. Biggest bite radius looks to be about an 8-10 footer.

Endedup being an awesome night. There were 4 of us out there we had the early bites but nothing else till 11:30. Then it happened. A quad header, that's right 4 on at one time. All were landed. Two 5' black tips and 8' bull and a 3' black tip that brought us an added bonus it got tangled to the leader of a 39" red fish.....guys the fish are here. I will post pics later today.

In the northeast at least, blues are a mako's primary forage. I think that in the gulf, sting rays are always going to be productive for the inshore species.

Sounds like it's going to be a fun trip.

Fished for a couple hours this evening with the Ray that Chris Gave Me. We got skunked. It happens.
Its not over yet! Never Give up! ;D
I noticed after soaking baits for a couple hours, The Mustad 20/0's weren't starting to corrode the Duratin finish like they normally do. That tells me the Salinity is down from all the rain.
It was still good to be on the water.
My Son Mike and my Brother Scott.

Daron's family/crew & I met up after lunch on the Sound side of Chicken Bone beach (Pensacola Bay).
It was freaking hot as Hades out with the humidity making it nasty for a fat man like me.
No one had had a bite yet, and I set up my gear to join in the fun.
Bob showed up later in the afternoon and we were having a good time jack jawing and telling stories.
Wish there'd been more catching an less fishing.

Daron's brother Scott(?) had a fish mouthing the bait and giving several short runs, but kept dropping it and finally disappeared.

Then late afternoon Daron got a solid hook up and landed a 5-6' Bull shark.
We couldn't find a tape measure, without true measurements we decided not to tag her.
She swam off along the beach, slow but strong.

In the early evening I noticed my 9/0 slack up, I tightened it, it kept slacking, I reeled like mad, set the hook on & landed a 5'8", 120# +/-, female Bull shark.
Tagged her for the Apex Predator Tagging Program and sent her on her way.
Bad thing about this was my 9/0 malfunctioning, I knew it had a potential problem, and sure enough it choked on the shark.
With help from the crew hand lining while I reeled, we got her in.
Bob was nice enough to take my reel home and see if he could find/fix the problem...  I tried a couple of times an thought I had it good to go... Nope.
He even graciously lent me his 9/0 for tomorrow, first rate people we have on this site.

I Had another strong hit, but it stole the bait, bare hook reeled in on a whole mullet hooked through the head.
Free meal for some toothy critter...  Mullet was the bait of the day, it got the hits.

I didn't get pics but Daron's crew has video, they should get that up soon.

I hope that shark rash my little Bull gave you with her biotch slap  ::)  doesn't get infected. Seriously, keep it clean cause they can be nasty sometimes.
Bummer on the video.

Bob & I met up around 6pm.

Well...  ::)  Y'all missed a good belly laugh and prize winning video.

The South East wind an low tide combined to generate 2-4' foot shore break that was really close together.
Being relatively inexperienced I tried to get out without baited 20/0 circles hanging on the yak.
Smart move, I tried and was dumped 6-7 times, I couldn't get my big'ol fishing yak out.
Waves kept dragging me in backwards before I could make any headway.

We thought about the Sound, but didn't want to drag everything out there and get bugged out again.
Tried another spot, high traffic area & not much parking, no way to see vehicle, not leaving anything in car to get smash & grabbed.
Called it a night, back to the hotel, swim in the pool & play with my son, relax & watch River Monsters with him, it made him happy.
Try again tomorrow.

Not sure what time i will make it to the water but I will definitely be there. Depends on what time my dad makes it in to town. For you guys that make it there before me, park there at the paring lot just past Margarittaville on the gulf side across from the tall condo. You will se the path through the dunes. Set up there and get ready. And if the waves are a little ruff I will run baits when I get there since I have some more experience...Hopefully though you guys will already be landed or be hooked up when I show up...Will have my 9/0 and 12/0 ready to put the smack down.

DAY TWO

Daron's crew stayed at their Condo to spend a day of their vacations with their wives.
Their wives are happy with shopping, lounging on the beach and whatnot, but needed attention.
Some pier fishing, lunch/dinner, walks on the beach and whatever else married couples do on vacation together.

My son and I hung out at the hotel for the first part of the day, slept in, leisurely breakfast, played in the pool and watched River Monsters on the tube.
We headed out late in the afternoon to meet up with Bob on the Gulf side.
The surf was kicking a bit for my inexperienced kayaking self.

Well... Y'all missed a good belly laugh and prize winning video.

The wind was blowing pretty good from the South East, with what passed for a low tide, combined to generate 2-4' foot shore break that was really close together.
Being relatively inexperienced I tried to get out without baited 20/0 circles hanging on the yak.
Smart move, as I tried and was dumped 6-7 times, I couldn't get my 13' fishing yak out.
Waves kept dragging me in backwards before I could make any headway.
I tried walking out a ways and climbing in, no go, some nice wave would catch me & dump me out.

We looked to fish elsewhere.
But we pussed out, not wanting to haul all the gear out again at the Sound side.
Tried a couple other spots but parking was maxed out.
Too the joy of my son we went to dinner, then back to the hotel to play in the pool some more and watch Monster Week on Animal Planet.
After my boy went to sleep, I stayed up watching videos on surf launching kayaks.

DAY THREE

Today at my son & I fished the Gulf side in Ft. Pickens by ourselves, everyone else was waiting for nightfall.
I managed to learn a few tips/tricks about surf launching, and I ran baits out several times during the day.
I was only dumped once, coming back in I let nose dig in on a wave.
Three hits on baits:
One I hooked into & had on for a couple of minutes, but the hooked pulled.
It could well have been a snag on one the big schools of Cownose rays going up & down the beach.
........
One was missed as the fish took all but the head & hook... One big jerk & gone.
........
Another was missed by me an the bait was simply gone when I finally reeled in that evening.
..............
Headed back to P'cola to meet the rest of the guys, and meet a new face from online.
Chris,  very nice to meet you, your fiance and Dad.
Nice to fish with you too, thanks for running the first sets of baits out, and for giving me some protips for surf launching at night.
So, I ran the second round of baits out for us as Chris had to leave early.
Running baits at night can be a little spooky when you know how many sharks are out there.
We stayed until Midnight, no sharks on the sand.
Chris had one hooked up, but it got off.
Then it was just more missed hits & stolen baits.

Video didn't turn out, but we did get a few pics from the first day.
There may be some more coming from the third night.

Daron hooked up

Back to the water.

You're too generous.

Fearless?  Heck no, just dumb enough not to know better.
No really, as long as somebody has the leader tight, sharky shouldn't be able to bite me.  ;D
Gotta give even the little ones a healthy amount of respect.

Now as to some definite heebiejeebies, I'll tell ya I had to dig a little to take that yak out at night.
All the pics of big hooks buried in peoples bodies, the odds of getting dumped at night, being inexperienced and knowing all the sharks out there.
But one thing I am is an adrenaline junky, and overcoming those jitters was exhilarating.

John,
I will tell you, just as I have told Sal many a time! Credit is Due when you earn it Brother!
Hopefully Doc will show up tomorrow and I can finally take my Yak off My Truck!
I would love to pull in at least a ten footer! THEY ARE HERE. My Wife saw a 10 foot Shark cruising right in between swimmers less than 10 feet from shore. All were oblivious that it was even there!
It is some scary stuff to watch that. I feel a lot more confident when they are on the end on my 130 lb test! I am feeling much better now! I might just need an adrenaline fix! ;)
It was a pleasure fishing with you and hopefully we can do it again! ;D
The Homestead in Pickens. This is still my favorite spot. I always manage to catch a Shark or two here! ;D Sorry for the Big Butts in the background. :o John had a thing or two to say to them when he showed up! ::)

But this one is really clean looking and was just under a Franklin shipped.
I hope I scored well with this one.

I'll have to survive on soup-n-crackers for lunch/dinner while at work for the next two weeks.

I'll check in with the update for the last half of the day.  Very quiet, no runs at all. I don't know if all of the extra activity from the holiday was a factor. Still, for me it was a great day.I was fishing, not at work, hanging out with people that I wanted to be with, not at work, outdoors on a beautiful day, and not at work. Oh, and did I mention that I didn't have to work today? What a great day!  ;D

Worse day fishing is better than the best day at work.  ;)

Daron Let me know when your planning on heading back to Kentucky, I would like to get up with you at least one more time and see if we can get a big one on the beach before you leave.

I'm guessing mid 70's John, There are some big Sharks cruising right in front of my condo. I might get up the Gumption to yak a bait out this evening.

Well,
The weed (Red Tide) came in yesterday. The surf is so bad today, The red flag is up. Think I'll just drink some suds and do what Vacation is all about. Lee, That was really the first test of your arms on a descent size shark. In combination with Alan's 5/0 grip. It was a true pleasure to crank in.
Its hard to mix fishing and family on the same Vacation. I got my first Bull under my belt. That is going to have to do. Red tide and high Surf=Miller Time!

Sorry to see the weather go bad, an your chances for a big'un.
It has been storming hard here in Mobile since early evening, I know its moving in on you.

If by chance another trip was to happen for you Kentuckians in September, may I suggest the week of the 8th or 22nd.
Moon, tides, almanacs & solunar calendars all seem to promise prime fishing those weeks.
I would love to do it again, it was very enjoyable.

I was going to Make a last ditch effort today, but the Storms are just too much. I will not go on the Beach with lightning anywhere around. There were water spouts in the bay this morning. Think I'll just go to Bubba Gump Shrimp this evening and hit up Bass Pro in Destin. ;D
My New Screen Saver. Me and My Boy Mike. I'm cutting the wire where she barreled rolled on the way in. A Quick Dehook and back she went.

Doc,
Those Haywire twists might be a little sketchy on that one. I redid it on the deck of the condo without the proper tools. If you want some more, just let me know. That 20/0 Mustad had a little custom work. The Barb smashed down and filed a little bit, plus the tip on the Diamond file. I have some really higher quality hooks for Sharks, But those are test proven and hard to beat for the price. ;)

Daron, we hope you made it home OK.
Sorry way to end the trip, with the bad weather.
Also hope you're not too disappointed, long way to come for you & Mike to wind up 1:0.
Need to get serious next time...  Sleep all day & fish all night, dusk till dawn  ;)

John,
My Idea of a good trip is that nobody got hurt. Nothing broke and everybody makes it home safe. The Shark was just a Bonus. ;)
I know I should have fished harder, but I have no regrets whatsoever. Yea, I drank too much beer. It was Vacation, that what I do! ;D
