Title: Source Belleville Washers
Post by: jaypeegee on February 12, 2014, 09:46:54 AM
Hi

As the title reads, can you suggest where I might source a small amount of these.
I have read close to every post here to see if an option has already been posted without success.
Local Avet dealer doesn't have them. To order them through them then will incur a reasonable wait and cost penalty as they are not stocked. If I have to I will resort to that. Getting them direct from Avet USA is likely never going to happen either.
NO company in NZ has them in the sizes I need (To fit an Avet MXL) ~5mm ID ~13mm OD
McMasters wont post them to me due to US export issues. Too much hassle.

Most Google searches result in manufacturers and not resellers.

I am waiting to see what shipping costs from a couple of ebay sellers will be but I don't feel super comfortable using ebay.

If another reel uses the same sizes as the AVet would that be an option?

Any help is welcomed.

How many do you need?   I purchased a few from avet.

If Bryan can't help you can have them sent to me and I will get them to you for actual shipping cost.

Sorta dumb, but I was on my way to the store just the other day to get some myself. Ended up not doing it. Could've gotten you a whole bunch. Too bad.

PS they're more like 5 x 10 mm, or at least mine are.

Hi.

You are all very kind to offer me your assistance.

Ideally, I hoped to get an address or two that could also be added to the Reel Parts forum and could help others in future.

I added the 6 that are in my LX to the MXL plus two spool spring washers plus a random flat washer estimated at .8mm thickness to get the result I was after. I was testing to see what and how much was needed to replace the pusher bush.
In doing so I note that the LX has thinner washers than the MXL which then made me wonder about mixing thicknesses as well as the arrangements to exploit the deflection differences.  Single thin config to flatten before a thicker series arrangement later in the stack.

I realize there is a high chance I am making my ignorance and naievity obvious to all but it seems like there may be a way to have both a small amount of drag just past bait and a reasonably high drag at full (below max drag of course)

Also: Yep. Robert, I couldn't remember what the OD was hence the ~*. I am at work and not in front of the reel and was estimating based on the LH spool bearing size.

Yes... there is some room for improvement. I was in my shop over the last few days, messin' around. I ended up using 8 x 16 mm bellevilles to achieve what I wanted.

There is some room for maneuvering in there, but very little or none in the axial plus direction if you know what I mean. ie can't add anything more lengthwise.

Would post pics but forgot my computer and phone charger up there  :-[

Typing this on wife's tablet. Very annoying. Has autocorrect too, even worse. I quit. Goonite

Sorry, I just get mine from Avet.  I could not locate the same or similar washer in the parts retail market.  They are usually too big as most belleville washers that I find are usually used for bolt tension to prevent a bolt from loosening...like a split or star lock washer.

And you probably do!

I am not trying to exceed max drag but find a better solution than the SF cam solution to allow a more gradual drag increase in the lower half of the curve.
In fact the end result will likely reduce MAX drag on the MXL but that is no problem for the purpose of the reel.

@ Robert: remember that the LH bearing Pusher bush is being replaced by the extra Bellevilles unless I misinterpreted what you meant.

Hi

I am assembling a list of places that ship Intly  which I will post here soon.
But before I do.

Can anyone confirm the thickness of the Bellevilles in the MXL and LX?
That way I know that the products per site are valid or not

I don't have calipers and cannot reliably measure mine.

Appreciate your help

JPG,

Send Alan a PM, he's helped me with these in the past. Have you thought about using a stone to alter the cam profile? Johntuttle spoke on this awhile ago, send him a PM as well.

Hi Leo

Appreciate that.
Yes, I have seen the use of the SF Cam as an option.
The pusher bush replacement has been suggested to me as a superior non destructive option by someone. I have asked his permission in speaking about this but haven't received it yet. I understand he is not well currently and this is likely the cause of his response/permission.
No big mystery or enigma as to who it is, Just my old school politeness I guess.   ;D

The idea is that the extra washers will provide a better drag response than the cam change. I will experiment with different series/parallel combinations and report here in case it provides options for others but I don't expect to discover anything that you all don't know already.
