Hi everyone,
I have been thinking about the most efficient way to increase the smoothness at higher drag. Using the eared, or hex gears / inserts, the first CF washer, only one side is utilized. It is the side facing the keyed metal washer. However if we were to put a keyed washer on the gear then the CF washer or we can put a thin round cut carbontex CF then a thin keyed washer, we can now utilized both side of the first eared or hex CF while the round CF would also provide some drag pressure. This would turn a hex/eared 3 stacks to a 7 stacks and turning a hex/eared 4 stacks to 9 stacks. The cost is about .8 to 1 mm thickness.
What do you all think?
So it would look like this:
gear - round carbontex CF - keyed metal washer - eared CF drag - keyed metal washer - eared CF drag - keyed metal washer - eared CF drag - keyed metal washer - eared CF drag - heavy keyed metal washer - spring metal washer - top hat or gear sleeve bushing
The Hex Drags already pull some crazy Numbers Max, Its all about experimenting here. What reel are you talking about experimenting with?
I did this with my baja special. I am also trying to see if I can do this once I get the inserts for the 500/112H and 113H from Lee. I would like to get nice smooth drags without having to put too much pressure on the star.
I don't follow how starting with a keyed washer is any different than starting with the face of the main gear?

If you start with the eared CF washer on the main gear the bottom face of the washer is moving with the gear, hence no drag activity. The eared washers are spinning against the keyed metal washers which are locked onto the sleeve. By starting out with a keyed washer then a eared CF washer, both faces of the CF are working against the keyed metal washers. I hope this make sense.
I guess I would have to see it. If you put a stainless gear against a stainless eared washer it will slip like snot on a doorknob. I just don't see it but I am standing by to be educated. :)

It should slip. The mod is to allow the eared CF drag to ride with the gears while the keyed metal washers remained stationary with the gear sleeve. If you insert a round carbontex CF drag between the gear and the keyed washer it is exactly how the normal drag stack work. This is just a hybrid of the system. I just don't want the first eared CF drag to not have both faces working. :-)

First metal washer in the system will always be the keyed washer.
I fixed it Max, I meant to say eared. :P
I'll put one together tonight I guess, my mind won't wrap around it. Who knows, maybe the next big thing.
