Title: silent 113h ?
Post by: redpaulhus on February 21, 2014, 05:13:30 PM
Hi all,
I bought a used narrowed 113h off ebay for a sweet price (it wasn't listed as narrow).
I'm sure I'll be posting more questions as I dig in and tune it up.

It arrived last night and I was surprised how quiet it is - my other 113h's and jigmasters have a pronounced click from the ar dog when cranking - but the new reel is silent.

I didnt think it was possible to silence a 113h - anybody know whats up ?

Thanks,

Red

I have double dogged 9/0's that are pretty quiet because I grease them up good.

You grease the dog?

I grease everything inside there. Not intentionally on the dogs, it just ends up there. My last step before I button one up is to get grease around the main gear. I'll squirt it in with a syringe and turn the gear and repeat. This is a good thing to do especially with steel gears. That last step quiets the dogs down considerably.

Might just be an old dog spring.  I worked on a small senator that was surprisingly quiet.  AR worked fine, but the spring was clearly a little 'tired'.

I use a thicker grease on the dog to keep it in place during reassembly but that also tends to make them significantly quieter than before.

thanks folks - I haven't had a chance to pull either of my 113H's apart yet, but I'll definitely compare grease levels.
I took a quick look at my narrow jigmaster and its not bone dry but its certainly not loaded - I'll probably try adding more lube to it first just to see if it changes the sound (gotta love the one screw take-down)

I'm also going to post some sideplate pic's -- while these are both made in USA reels, they have very different sideplates both cosmetically and in terms of the contours beneath the handle and drag star.

thanks again !

There may also be some crud built up on the bridge screw. I bet just taking it apart and putting it back together will do the job.
