Title: penn 190 seaboy
Post by: jamesnashtonbrady on February 26, 2014, 03:03:45 PM
Had a guy give me a penn 190 seaboy today and its missing a few parts. Befor I go replace the parts I was wondering if there was any upgrades I could do to it to make it better or is what I see what I get with this reel?

There is a lot you can do with it, but it may be more than your interested in. It should already have an aluminum spool. You can put in a stainless gear sleeve and Lee can give you a stainless dog. I think you will have a brass main gear that you can swap out for a steel one and then do a 5+1 upgrade (I think Bryan has figured that one out.) Add a power handle and you are all set.

some older reels have a first generation bridge and gear sleeve.  the post is very skinny and modern gear sleeves will not fit.  chances are you have an old reel.

i just took a look at mysticparts.com to find the specs on the reel, which is something i should have done first!!!!  so, a 3.1:1 gear ratio, jigmaster drags and a longbeach 65 frame.  i wonder if this frame and spool would fit any other side plates?

anyway, for this reel, i would put a carbontex drag under the main gear, grease all four drag washers and add a jigmaster power handle (which i think you already have) and go fish with it!  if you end up damaging the brass gear sleeve, then, and only then, i would spend the $20 to install a stainless steel gear sleeve.  personally, i would add a 3/0 grip to the reel, but they cost more than the reel is worth.  yup, that's what i'd do!   ;D

Already has carbontex drags in it. Just got to put one under the main gear and already has the power handle. Might get a frame from the reel you mentioned.  Just to stiffn it up
