Title: two small contests while on board
Post by: alantani on April 08, 2014, 01:22:50 AM
i'm going to have a couple of small prizes during the trip.  one is going to a knot competition, using my 40# big game to to a swivel. the four guys with the highest score will be in a tug of war competition for a small reel.  the second is going to be a competition with the same format, except we will be testing your mono to spectra connection.  the price will be something, um, larger.

start practicing those knots.  for the competition, the mono we will use will be from a spool of 40# biggame that i have.  the spectra will be something, not sure what just yet.  i will provide mono, spectra, and the scale.

so, mel, a single san diego or a double?  and an old school bimini to an albright, or new school tony pena?  what's it going to be?

single SDJ knot to the swivel and maybe an FG/Sebile knot for braid to mono...it's not the knot it's who ties it. ::) ::) ::)

Tim, it's your turn pal...

if you guys want to practice, use 40# big game and a good quality 65# pound solid spectra.  it will be worth the effort.

I do believe Tim and I will be tying similar knots, and believe me it works Tim.

What happens if the line breaks, but not at the knot?  That is what happened with the best knots at the SSS on the Trilene knot machine.

When you start to tighten them up it's critical to make sure they are right, if not they are useless.

this would be my entry if I was on the trip provided there is a time limit.

the guys on the maximus use a tony pena and single san diego.  i had one of basil pappas' wind on's, but i used a single san diego as instructed and i landed a 150 yellowfin.  the question is still, who's knot is strongest.  and it isn't just about which knot is tied, it is also about how it is tied.  allowing a knot to tighten on it's own may leave it stronger than one that is "cinched" down.

i am working on the grand prize now. it's going to be something very special.

not sure about this one.  it's actually a good question.  i just tied a couple of single san diegos with 40# big game and they broke at 40#'s midway between the scale and the knot.  i dunno, what do you guys think?   :-\

maybe whoever ties for first can arm wrestle for first place!

The tie breaker should be something like 130-200.

Great idea for the contests Alan!!!  Sounds like it is going to be a fun trip.

I think you will have a waiting list for next years trip, even before it is 100% a go.

I would be disqualified...I would get seasick tying such a know on the boat.  lol

Swivel, I would use a bimini to palomar knot.  I haven't really tested it out on a large enough fish to test it, but I haven't had one fail yet.

joining lines...that one is a hard one...  Bimini (mono) to worm know (spectra).
