The pinion gear (Jigmaster 500 and 9/0) will be available for testing from Sal by end of this month. If everything is working fine, I will create another package with all these parts together...

I put one of my three sets in a 501 today. I've got to say this is a great upgrade. The best part is its truly drop in. No alterations of the side plate or bridge. Just a parts swap. Well done Alan! I will mention the only two minor issues I found. I normally wouldn't comment on them but I thought someone might benefit. When I put the springs and dogs on the bridge one spring kept jumping out of the slot in the dog. It was due to a spring that had the end bent at less than a 90 degree angle. It was probably bent in shipping because the spring is delicate. I bent it to a 90 with a pair of needle nose and problem solved. The other thing was it wouldn't go all the way into free spool after I assembled it. There was a small burr on the jack that was catching on the yoke. I hit it lightly with some sand paper and now its smooth as butter. I think the burr was from when the tabs were punched. No big deal but I will look at the others when I install them.
These were very minor problems and would not keep me from buying more. Over all this is a very nice upgrade. Thanks again Alan!  Bob

That's typical when you install a stainless yoke Bob. Of all the BP Gears I've put in 114H's and 9/0's. If you don't polish up the jack tabs with some emery cloth, they will hang up every time. ::)

Initially, I was going to use the soft springs for both dogs. However, I decided to use a little bit stiffer spring for both dogs. By doing so, that spring will lift up the dog slightly (it won't hurt, but I just want to play it safe). Therefore, I am going to go back to the original design for the softer springs. They will be available in 2 weeks (ETA). I will send them out to people upon request. By the way, the PENN OEM spring will also work if you have some on hand.

Alan, The one that was bent was one that was already on the bridge post. It wasn't a big deal. I like the stiffer springs. The burr on the jack was tiny too. I probably could have forced it but I prefer to play it safe.  ;)  I just wanted to mention it unless someone else had the same problem. I really like them like they are.  thanks, Bob

The stiffer spring will lift up the dog a little bit. If the softer spring is used, the dog will stay flat. The stiffer spring has little bit much power.
As I mentioned before, I want to play it safe and let everybody to know.

Bob,
Thanks for the "heads up" on the spring and little burr.  You are right, that could be very helpful and I will be watching for those issues before installing.

I put my set into a 500S. I also had a little issue with spring on the main dog, but a little bending got me in business. My original bridge has a dog with a C clip that either Penn did or after market modification, but the new bridge when in it's place a okay. My S also has the red spool which I think makes it the anniversary edition but maybe not and is also newer I think. I'm old so I did make a common mistake by putting a screw with threads in the spring hole, which I since corrected due to the free spool lever not wanting to work. DOH! I did not have to sand anything and it is now working smoothly. I did add just a touch of grease on the dog pin to help hold things while my fumble fingers put it back together.

I did notice a burr on the 2 yokes from when it was punch out. I installed it anyway, it didn't cause any problems that I saw, I'll go ahead & deburr them just to make sure. I also had the dog springs wanting to pop up so there's another fix.I installed the new parts in a Newell 300c set of sideplates along with a stainless sleeve & Newell 5-1 gear set, everything went together fine. Now I'got a nice strong jig reel for fishing the surface iron.

Hey guys,

Finally got all my parts together and can start upgrading my reels.  First reel done was my 501. Upgrades were A Tiburon frame, Alan C's SS package "A", Bryan's 5 stack drag kit, Alan T's SS gear sleeve, a 5:1 SS gear set from Global (until Alan comes out with his), and a 24-56 handle from Scott's.
Everything went together well and the parts looked great.  No problems with the dog springs or the jack that I could notice.  Dogs are pretty quiet (My Trinidad dog upgrades make a lot more noise.  The gears are a little rough but not horrible.  Alan T's gear sleeve really makes a nice snug fit for the handle which I like.  Didn't do any max drag test as I don't intend to fish super heavy drag and I just want the smoothness.
I just want to thank everybody mentioned above as everybody made ordering parts easy and shipping was prompt.  USPS on the other hand could use a little help as they were slow processing some of my packages. (at least they didn't lose them).  And also thanks to all the members who contribute their knowledge and experience to this site.  It helps guys like me to "tinker" with fewer mishaps.   ;)

the 112H failed at around 16lbs

My take on this is that these jigmaster gears could handle 20lb, but I would use the new spacer and Bryan's kit, that one was smoother. I'm still not sure what's causing these gears to fail in the 112H at 16 lbs, we will need to wait and see what Alan's people come up with, I believe they're already working on them.

This was a tough test, not like pulling the line. I was pulling 32 to 34 bricks just by turning the handle, each brick is around 6lbs and the wagon is 25lbs. if any of you will try it, you will see that its not easy.
That little reel, the new black pearl bridge and gears did very good. The only problem I had was with the "T" handle knob, it was digging in the palm of my hand. Little by little all of my reels will have round  knobs, even the large ones, the round knob always feels better.

Title: Install on Pro Gear 255
Post by: Gman on May 20, 2014, 11:05:33 PM
I was able to install the Pro Challenger SS double dog bridge, along with AT's SS gear sleeve and Bryan Young's 5+1 carbontex drag sets, in two Pro Gear 255's.  I also put in steel 4:1 main gears that I got from two old Jigmasters and 13-99 pinions, which bring the gear ratios down to 3.75:1. It's a really nice combo and I'm very happy with it.  The only wrinkle is that the second dog stops the jack from moving fully in the free spool direction (the Pro Gear 255 jacks are shaped a bit differently from the standard Penn jigmaster jacks, and are also flipped in configuration so I don't think they are changeable with the Pro Challenger or Penn Jigmaster jacks), so there's a relatively small gap between the lever and the reel frame when shifting into free spool--but it still goes fully into free spool.  I'm happy to live with that in exchange for the additional performance.

Now, the only question is what line to install.  Going with 50 lb. spectra backing, I think.  Top shots: 30 lb.? 25 lb.? And how long?

Thanks very much!

Talked to the shop earlier today, will pick up my bridges tomorrow. They are carrying the double dogged bridge. They also carry Dawn's SS yoke. I will pick up the jack from Alan eventually. For those of you on Oahu who haven't been, I recommend a stop at Brian's. Good people and a full service rod building / real maintenance shop as well as tackle.

It WORKS!!
After lots of fiddling, I got the dual dog SS bridge into my Pro Gear 2000 Pacifica. The reel has 4:1 Penn steel gears, Lee's insert with hex drags, stainless sleeve, crank and Kolekar spinner handle and a Pro Gear bridge. I'm saying it's the strongest Pacifica out there and it's gonna fight a blue fin tuna in 1 WEEK to prove it!!

The bridge fits the side plate exactly, very tight tolerances, but once it starts singing, a man by the name of Wolfgang Amadeus would be jealous.

Thanks everyone, I a happy camper.

Hi all,

I would line to know of anyone has any problem installing this DD bridge in a USA made Jigmaster?

So far, I had one did not fit the side plate without modification. I want to know if anyone has the same problem.

Thanks,
Alan

The status on the 9/0 pinion gears is scheduled to be done on 7/27. Then the 9/0 pinion geare and the Jigmaster 500/501 5:1 gear set kits will ship out to the USA together on that date.

The following picture is from the Brian's fishing supply (Brian) sent it to me. He stated that he had to cut off that area to made my bridge (the second dog) fitted. It look like that sideplate is different that I have seen for the Jigmaster. Can anyone see that?

That was not an issue anymore. It was the sideplate.

Can someone specify is this double dog alternating, or simultaneous?  I've now got a total of (10) various Jigmaster models.  500s, 501, 506, If I do one, I have to do them all right?

And...one of mine is a full Accurate 501.  I haven't broken it down since buying it from Randy @ Vintage Tackle. (How did I get that plug in there, lol).  Can I assume it's going to be needing a DD bridge too?

Thanks!

Alan C. how about dog with a pin?

The dog it is installed on this bridge is working fine. Therefore, I don't see it will be needed.

sorry to inform you but in one of my two bridges it slips up, sorry again.  :(

Which side of the dog was slipped up? Did you use the new springs? We have replaced a softer springs. You can also try to use the spring from PENN.

Alan: If you still have the package available for the Jigmaster 500 I would like a set. If there is a SS sleeve available I would like it as well.

Hi Joe,

I will send you an invoice via PayPal. I do have the SS gear sleeve available, but this gear sleeve is same as Alan Tani's second generation. It will require couple washers on the bottom because it shaved all the way down.

Mel,

Please note that you will need to bend down a little on the loop end of the spring.

Alternating Dogs on these.

Mine is simultaneous...I have the stock 8 tooth ratchet. I noted in Sal's pics he used an 8-tooth also...and his dogs appeared simutaneous too. I'd say coastal_dan must be using a 10-tooth ratchet.

I have no idea what I was thinking back in May of 2015  ::), but mine are paired dogs, simultaneous engagement.
