Title: DPX 500, 600 line capacity with topshot
Post by: BrianBM on August 31, 2014, 12:54:33 AM
Charks' note that the DPX and other reels are going away led me to ask a question of Accurate. It didn't get answered, so I thought I'd try it here ...

Assume a DPX 500 or 600 reel.  Assuming a 200 yard topshot of 60 or 80 lb. mono, how much suitable braid would fit the spool underneath?  Precision not needed, a WAG will do.  The spools of 500 and 600 reels are presumably the same, it's the rest of the reel that (probably) differs from series to series.

I wrote to Accurate to ask this question.  "Kristin" replied to confirm that I was talking about these specific reels.  And that's where it ended.  ....  So, I thought I'd ask here.  You never know what a discounted going-out-of-production price might be.

I do have a Cal Sheets -tuned 16 waiting to get wet.  Whether the Accurate reel offers any gen-u-wine performance improvement over the Int'l II 16 is a different question. Cheery speculation on that is fine, too, but I'm really most interested in how much Line One would go under the topshot on a 500 or 600, and what drag could be asked of the reel before a component fries or I go overboard.

First the spools of the 500's and 600's are not the same size The 500 holds 650 yards of 50lb spectra per Accurate and the 600 holds 530 yards of 65lb.

Second are you going to use spectra of the same breaking strength as the topper, lighter spectra than the topshot or spectra with a greater breaking strength than the topshot? You have to come up with a size/diameter of spectra used before you can figure out how much will fill a spool so you can then figure out how much to back out of the equation for the mono topshot you want to add.

Lastly a 200 yard topper is very long is there some special application you are using the reel for where such a long topshot is needed?

If you look in the manuals that Accurate has online for the E-Series reels, they give a capacity with topshot. The 665=600's, the 870=500's, the 270-400's and the 197=400n's.

Accurate also has a line calculator. I'm not sure how accurate it is as I have never used for spooling reels.

Again you will need the diameter of the lines you plan to use to get the calculations.

Thank you all.

SoCal, local New York partyboats ban the use of braid on tuna trips.  (Honest.  They really do.) I don't want the braid to appear until a tuna has run off a useful amount of mono.  There is at least one New Jersey partyboat, that sails for tuna, that permits braid if it's underneath a minimum of 200 yards of mono, so that's my standard.

My thought is that I'd fish 60 or 80 lb braid with 50 or 60 yards of mono on top.  I haven't used braid offshore enough to have an opinion as to what braids are best for that use, so will assume Line One 60 (real test is almost 90, I think) and 50-60 on top of that.

Looking at chart dayOne was kind enough to post, the capacity for braid underneath the 665 - size spool isn't quite big enough to accommodate that kind of topshot and leave enough braid underneath.   Either I cheat on the mono a bit, or I travel with a bit less braid underneath than I want to do.

Food for thought.

You're welcome.

BX, DPX and Fury reels are being variously modified, discontinued or replaced in the Accurate lineup.  The Fury series doesn't interest me, and I don't jig - too much standing, bad legs - so the instantaneous hooksets permitted by AR bearings don't matter.  Multiple dogs, now, there's a promise of trouble-free performance that I like. I haven't noted a thread that discusses these reels.  Have I missed something?

The chart is kind of hard to read when cut and pasted, but a 665/600 holds 400yds of 65lb braid with a 75yd topshot of 50lb mono, or at least they say it will. That sounds like what I understood you to want. I would also check with Basil at BHP for actual spooling amounts.

all other things being equal, the best reel is the one that you can service yourself.   :-\

Ummm.  Well.  Yes... in principle .... that's why I have taken to lurking in the shadows here, as though I were looking for bottles to redeem for beer money.

That said, since I have no practice in maintaining reels and no impulse to learn until I retire - soon, probably October - I might as well collect information.  All designs have their eccentricities.  I may as well learn what they are, and if something crawls across across my line of sight at a very good price, it'd be helpful to already know about it, so as to be able to buy in a hurry without spending time on research.

Brian

Which NY boats do you fish? Pretty sure we have seen each other.

Most recently, the Viking boats; last trip at least five or six years ago (a bunch of surgeries intervening.) In days of yore, the Tampa VI in Sheepshead, and whichever Speedy Capt. Hubert had at the time, in Captree.  AFAIK he doesn't done a tuna trip in fifteen years or more. Possibly a trip on one of the Starstreams, and that was at least thirty years ago.

I'm a geeky-looking guy with a limp.  We might've met, it's certainly possible.  I'm looking at the Jamaica for a 24-hour tuna trip, I think that was the North Jersey boat with a rule permitting braid if underneath at least 200 yards of braid. If retired this October, I might be able to get a trip or two this year, God and NMFS willing.  Otherwise I will spend my angling efforts on groundfish boats and walking the surf with a rod.
