Title: Is the Tyrnos 12 II enough reel for grouper?
Post by: Felton on October 18, 2010, 09:40:03 PM
I am very tempted at pulling the trigger on a Tyrnos 12II. I figure it would be a great all around reel over here on the east coast. The only question I have is will it handle the locked down, knock out fight with a grouper. Shimano states that the tyrnos 12II can put out 33lbs of drag. If it can actually handle those #'s for a short amount of time then I think it would be adequate. What do you think???

Thank for the site and all the help Alan.

I use Tyrnos 12s and 16s for fishing the great barrier reef. These are fantastic reels that have dragged some pretty big sharks and GTs to the surface and of course some nice large mackerels into the boat. I have no idea about drag settings as I simply use as much as I think I need at the time using 50lb Finns braid and good rods.

Pull that trigger!

if you get the reel, check out the drag material and make sure the carbon "yarn" is not peeling off.  alan
