Title: Big Boy Gear Sleeves
Post by: Cortez_Conversions on February 25, 2015, 03:42:27 AM
I'm about to start on a run of gear sleeves for the Senator big dogs-- the 116A, 116, 117, and 118. They will be made from 416 stainless steel and heat treated to 42c Rockwell.
Both sleeves have an extra tooth on them. I can't guarantee what color they will be after heat treating. They may be shiny, off color or dark colored. These are a drop in replacement for the stock brass sleeves. The flats will not go down to the ratchet, but they will be low enough so you can use the brass or steel main gear.
These big boys will be under $50 a piece, but not by much.
So just a quick show of hands... I won't hound you, or throw sticks at you if you don't end up committing. I just need a rough estimate.
Thanks!

I will definately be interested in sleeves for both the 116L, and 117L.  I may not be able to buy a bunch of them up front, but I'd say I would go through about 10-20 for the 117 and 5-15 for the 116 annually, based on last year's service records.  However, I would likely only be able to get 2 (or so) of each to start with.

I can't wait to get these on a few reels that may get fished this summer.

The Ahi are here, but there is alot of small bait around right now, so they have been picky at times.  Being in the right spot at or just before sunrise, with a live Akule, or Opelu (Bigey Mackeral scad) will often get you bit.  There are also large 125lb+ Yellowfin hiting in the blind on trolled 'baits'.  I wish I had a boat to go take advange of the bite.  I may get out later this summer.  I'd love to get the oportunity to test the inserts and sleeves on a nice fish on a 12/0 or 14/0.  Or maybe a customer will give it a workout and I can check them after a year of use or so.

Adam,
Thank you for offering these here.  I am putting one in my personal 14/0 if I can ever find the time to work on my multiple personal reel projects.  I have had a near 45 reel service backlog since anout January.

Thanks again!
These look great!
Be nice to have a kit available with the SS dog(s).  I know this was a small production run.  I wouldn't think you shouldn't have any trouble finding interested parties.

Post by: Shark Hunter on June 14, 2015, 05:45:45 AM
Adam is having issues with tolerances at his cutter. I know the inserts are a perfect compliment to these beauties, but perfection takes time. They are a closer together than I thought. As far as the dogs, Lee is the Man on these. I will put in an order to the ss dog master.

Cracker,
I just put in an order for 20 sets of each. I have some on hand. Send me a pm with what you need.
The dogs that Lee makes for me are a little longer than the stock dog on the 12/0. This isn't a problem and they work fine. The 14/0's are the same size as stock.

Just an update. You will need stainless dogs with this upgrade. I had Lee cut some more. The price has gone up to $4 each plus shipping. You can get these from Him or Me.
The brass dog will wear out quickly against that stainless ratchet.

Daron has a small quantity of SS 15-116mk II and SS 15-117 dogs and I have some more.  As soon as he sells the ones he has I will be selling the ones I have and I purchased enough material to cut more.  These are costing more to cut than the smaller dogs but they don't hurt as much to finish, burnt and ground down finger tips.  I will have to sell them for $4.00 each.   All of the 15-116 dogs I have now are the longer SS 15-116mk II dogs, if anyone wants stock length dogs I can make some as needed.

I haven't ran a stainless sleeve without one, so I can't answer that Tom.
That would be like running a Stainless dog on a brass sleeve.
We have them, so why not use them. I know they are heavier and make the most Heavenly Sound. :D
Sal,
I'm not going into business, I just wanted to have these available for people that bought Tom's sleeves. I will be happy to keep them.
Feel free to contact Keta if anyone wants these. I am back up.

Tom, from the 4/0 (113H )  and up, I have not seen any damaged dogs, but on smaller reels I have seen it many times.
I personally believe the stainless steel dogs are a good thing. As Daron mentioned, if we have them, why not use them.

Did you have any luck on your Yogi & trout quest?

Also, I noticed an ad up on EBay for your gear sleeves.  Dod you consider checking with Scott's to see if they would be willing to carry your product?

Bear, yes.
So common these days, hardly gets me up outta the chair. My buddies kids were a bit rattled, though.
I didn't get to those Golden trout, the weather was a bit dicey on the eastern side of the Sierra when I was there, they even got snow last week. Those trout are hidden away in a few high mountain streams and lakes. I have learned not to pick fights with mother nature.
I had my fill of Brookies and Rainbows to scratch that itch.

I haven't looked into Scott's. I don't do enough volume to make it worth the effort. Remember, I have a day job and this parts stuff just pays for my fishing trips...
Maybe someday!

Hello All,

The big boy gear sleeves for the 10/0 thru 16/0 Penn reels are slowly making their way thru thru the shop, and I mean slowly. I know the 114/115 sleeves are out of stock as well now.
In the mean time, the seller n-joro on Ebay is dumping his stock of my gear sleeves. The unbranded 416 Stainless Steel sleeves are indeed Cortez Conversions products.

The 304 Stainless Steel sleeves he's selling under his seller name fish-winch account are not made by Cortez Conversions. I've been getting a few inquiries about this and want you all to know what's what.

Thanks,
Tom

Our 98-116/116A and 98-117 SS Main Gear Sleeves are finally back in stock! These two sleeves fit the four largest Penn Senators out there, the 10/0,12/0,14/0, and the 16/0!
We added an extra tooth to the 98-116/116A SSand two teeth to the 98-117 SS to reduce the amount of back play in the handle.
All of our custom gear sleeves are made using heat treated 416 Stainless Steel. The extra time and energy spent using this material far out weighs the marginal corrosion issues those who don't maintain their reels may experience. In order for a material to be heat treatable, it must have a bit of iron in it. Once heat treated, these parts undergo a process called passivization. This process removes any free iron on the surface of the parts, preventing surface corrosion. I want these sleeves to be the last ones you will ever need to buy, Period.

Properly maintained, these sleeves will out live you!

There are cheaper materials out there, like 304 Stainless Steel, but there is are two reasons none of the major reel manufacturers use it for gear sleeves. It is very prone to galling and seizing.
What this means to your reels is the possibility of the threads galling on your drag star and/or the sleeve seizing to the bridge shaft.
What this means to you is the possibility of losing that fish of a lifetime because a manufacturer chose to use the cheapest material possible.

We are a small, part time business trying to put the best quality parts in your reels. I know it get frustrating seeing "out of stock" on our website, but please have the piece of mind it's because quality takes time.

The best is the best, if we wait we wait. This ain't Walmart in the age of instant gratification. Your clientele, I think, understands this for the most part- I'm struggling to find time to get a couple rods a year done on the side for friends, much less running a fab business like you, Adam, and others. It has to be a labor of love. Thanks to you and all our fabricators, technicians and engineers on the site who not only provide the service but from what I have seen are very interactive with the fishing community to bring the best upgrades anywhere to us.
