Title: Delrin washers...?
Post by: Aiala on March 13, 2015, 04:05:36 PM
Hello, Dawn!   :)

I am interested in acquiring some Delrin washers for my rebuilds, and mention has been made that they are now available from smoothdrag.com, but I can't seem to find a list of various sizes on your website. Am I being denser than usual?   ???

Thanks!

They aren't on the list.  I used to include them with the Smoothie washer kits, before Carbontex
This is what I have:

Penn 500, 140, 113H, 114H
Daiwa 27H, 30H/50H/400H, 600H/900H.
Abu C3 C4 and related models.

Thanks again Dawn, this will save me from making the cutter cut "standard" ones.  How thick are yours?

Good question Lee. I'm not really fond of cutting these myself. Dawn, this will make life alot easier for me.??

The Penn ones are .030.
The Daiwa are .020
Abu .020

Are these Deltin washers used under the main gear, or somewhere else in the drag stack?

Under the gear, on top of the stack and I like to put one between the spacer and the star.

Lee,
What thickness of Delrin are you using for under the gear, top of the stack and between the spacer and star?

.020" and .030" depending on the space available.  Adam's inserts and an open gear will allow 3 .030" washers.  The current 349H I'm building does not have enough room to use a .030" under the gear.
Title: Re: Delrin washers...?
Post by: Alto Mare on March 19, 2015, 10:56:29 AM
.030" are of the same exact thickness as stock penn washers  for under the gear. Some like to use .020" to get a little more room with the star, or if you're adding another on top.
No matter which configuration you have on your drag stack, as long as the last eared washer is sitting flush with the lip of the main gear, you would never have problems with clearance, using the .030".
If that eared washer is sitting just a little above the lip or below, you will still be good.

I do use the .020" myself, but I feel more comfortable using the .030" on larger reels, they should both do good though.
I personally have not noticed any additional smoothness with the star by using an Acetal right under it, I use one Acetal under the gear and one as the last washer right under the spring washer. It doesn't matter is that top Acetal washer is under the spacer or above, it would work the same.

hello,
I am using Delrin washers under the main gear on several of my Newell's with Bryan's hotrod drag stacks.  Has anyone tried a Delrin washer under the spring washer, or maybe on top of the spring washer in a Newell?  I like the Delrin under the main gear, the initial drag is very smooth.  I don't think I have lost any drag, but have not tested to find out.  Bryans brakes add so much drag,  I have plenty to spare.

Note that I use Carbontex drag washers in many of my drag kits because they are the best available.

Honestly, I just have not tried them yet to determine if, for me it's go or no-go.

I've been super busy, and I though I would have a chance today, but a reel that I though would be fixed in 2 hours took me 9 hours to get it right...  A bit of customization of parts and a lot of trial and error...and now I can honestly say, I HATE fixing John Baker reels with the push button and spring lever release gear transmission system...  But it's all good...reel is working like a champ.  Whew...I was about to give up.  And this was my 3rd session to try to fix the reel.  Persistence paid off this time.

anyway, I digress.  I just got some material from Lee, so I'm going to punch them out and try them on a few reels then off to the park I got to run like an idiot pulling the drags until they are hot and see how it does with the heat of a running fish...or fat man in my case.  Stay tuned.

To make the stack fit in the reel nicely I used .020 delrin under the gear and under the bellevile on top of the drag stack. Works very smooth and very strong. No drag lost at all. Just runs smoother.

Brendan, if you think about how the reel works for just a minute, you should be able to answer your own question.
The washer for under the gear should help the gear spin smoothly and not adding friction.
Some are combining the two, these should not. The washers in the stack and the one under the gear have different functions... as they should.
The best solution is for you to try it for yourself and let us know if you feel the difference.
It should be noticeable just by testing the reel in your hands, but really noticeable when fishing with it.
To me, an Acetal/Delrin washer is one of the best upgrade we have available., for those of you that claim the carbon washer is a better choice, that's fine too, whatever floats your boat ;).

I was just thinking of the system in a Newell and since we are looking at slick smoothness in the system above and below the stack the thought that I have is to cut a delrin washer the size of the heavy Newell drag spacer. I will place it between the spacer and the Belleville. It will not affect the drag stack height in a manner that would bump the side plate but may have to remove the 3-18 washer if I run out of star space. If we get the new SS stars made then this will not be an issue at all. Just Thinking!!

It looks like the Fathom uses 4-349 under the gear, so yes I have that one.  (Same as 113H)

Miss Flower of the desert, may I inquire as to which model Penn reel you placed Dawn's 0.050 thickness delrin washer for under the main gear? Did it make it hard to get the sideplate on(too thick)? I'm upgrading a couple reels - 501,506,99(all 500 gears, plastic side plates), 113YTS(plastic side plates) and was curious if I needed to buy a sheet of .020 as Lee suggested and some cutters or if the ones easily purchased from Dawn will suffice? Less hassle is fine with me.

Thanks,

Hank

Hesperia, I have a buddy who lives there by Ft. Irwin, my aunt has a home there too. Thanks ladies(both flowers of the desert ;D), if they're the same thickness as stock Penn undergear washers than I see no problemo. I drove through and visited there in 2010 on my way to Ft. Hunter Liggett Ca.

Dawn, should I e-mail or call you for delrin washers for under main gears:
-3 Penn 500 series reels
-2 Penn 113 series reels
-2 Penn 114 series reels

Another one I have:

Trinidad / Torium 16, 20, 30

I have delrin washers in many Trinidad / Torium reels used on charter boats. They come back every year with no visible wear.

I do put a smaller diameter one under the drag star on many Senator reels. It makes a big difference in tightening the Star. No metal on metal.

On the 6/0's and 9/0's that use the thick wave washer turn it upside down so the smooth side is up.
