Title: We are alive and back from a great trip!!!
Post by: sundaytrucka on June 20, 2015, 01:28:01 PM
Everything went well, one day of foul weather, other than that a great trip!!!

Near limits of yellowtail, we were throwing back the small ones so we would not limit out on yellow tail the second day of fishing.

Enjoying Denny's with some of the guys right now, great group of guys at that!!!

More updates to come from myself and others.

-Scott

A few pics:

Count on early morning, only the second day.

Ran out of room in the first RSW hold, had to empty the second hold of bait and started using it.

Sure beats suffering through a hangover.

Looks like a great catching trip instead of fishing trip. That was a pile of fish all boxed up there.

If we didn't limit it was because Captain Mike wanted to save some space in case we found some jumbo home guards. It's not like the YT didn't want to play.

I'm sure Ed shed a small tear... but I think there was still another bottle of Kirkland vodka back in the galley!

We missed you big guy, hope you can make it next year.

Thanks Warren, serves my vanity.

Pretty cool "tanker" that Sal and Alan put together for the trip, a few people tried to pry it from my hands.

I cannot lie, I had my eye on it and wanted to win it when the prize pool was first announced. Now my 113H "tank" has a big brother.

That is a Nice reel buddy. Sal built it, so I would rest easy, that baby has the best of everything.

actually, joey put it together so it's not fully tanked, but pretty close.  sal donated the gear set last year but i was not able to get this reel done in time.  it's got a single dog, but will still deliver enough drag to test a big man like scotty!

I won a Penn Squall 15 and a matching Penn rod in the drawing.  I traded it to Mike for the 99'd Jigmaster he won in the bucket challege after Randy donated it back to the pot.
I now have a 114h with a Tib frame, a Topless YTS and a Jigmaster. I'll probably add the stainless double dogged bridge and Bryan's souped up drag stack to 'Tank' it out.

Hey, Sunday, don't forget to check those drags on that tld 15/30 they seemed a little sketchy to me. You know when we first started messing with drags back in the 70's or 80's Ronnie on the Legacy showed me shimano white drags and shimano grease, cut down to fit into my newells, were considered smoother than ht-100's, they just needed more maintenance. We used to stick the washers into the grease and let it soak through. This was the best we had at the time. I noticed a little jerkiness in one of my reels recently, opened it up and low and behold white washers still in there after all these years! Of course I changed them out to carbon fiber, but I tell you, if I just greased up those white shimanos, they'd be ok! Just sayin.

Those newells had these hard, hard, hard, Formica like washers sanded with very coarse which seemed like 40 grit even under gear washer. Very reliable but had shortcomings. Get burned once by a seal and it was over. Don't get me started on delrin, Wai you know how I feel.

I will be checking them soon, going to breakdown all the reels and perform a service. Thanks for looking out Warren.

As Alan mentioned, regarding some jerkiness, it may be the guides on the rod that caused the stutter and jerk. I will also do some static test wwith other reels on the same rod and vice versa,  see what the results come out to.

Thank you Tim! And I will.

I plan on adding a double dog to it, maybe one of Adam's inserts, but start with the double dog.

I will post pics of the 114H guts when I break it open. It really is a nice and versatile reel with the narrow frame, I can live bait fish, dropper loop, bottom/rock fish, grouper fish, medium duty troll...this thing has it covered.

No worries on the patch Scott!  It was very cool fishing with you.  I may get down for an overnight trip end-August if the fishing is still good.  I'll let you know.

Alan was just trying to be nice. You should be ashamed of yourself bringing a jerky drag like that on an "Alan Tani" trip. I know what I heard and saw. I guess I shouldn't be too critical of other people's equipment, sorry, carry-on gentlemen.

What I really meant to say was, bring the reel over and we can figure out what is wrong with it.
