Title: Displays, Cabinets, Plinths & Such
Post by: Tightlines667 on July 08, 2015, 07:55:37 AM
I am somewhat facinated by some of the means others have found to store and display their fishing reels, and equipment.   Sal's beautiful, hand made cabinet, and his other display case immediately comes to mind...

Thread is here...

Gotta share the link to this collection again..

I've also seen some pretty snazzy reel displays in some of the older catalogs.

Just thought I'd start a thread where folks can post pictures of reel and fishing gear displays (w/ or w/o said gear).

I attached a picture of my first display, a cheap/simple IKEA wall cabinet I spruced up a bit with some green felt backing ($30 investment).

So much drool 'worthyness'.  Glad I'm not the only one saving other peoples pictures! HAHA!  I'm working with an Ikea system currently...it suits fine for the time being the glass doors obviously are a must...this is a few months ago, so things have come and gone.

Dan, that looks nice, its a good start.  Keep in mind you could grab a nice display cabinet for $50 or less on craigslist, mine was $40 and it was less than a mile from my house. I'm not talking about my custom cabinet, I couldn't put the price on that one ;) ;D

Thanks for doing this John, I hope I get to see more. Very nice...

Very nice accumulation of pictures John.  Thanks.

Sal, how are your spinners held on the cabinet door?

Check here, we discussed this earlier:

Most of the spinners you see are gone, one of the members here purchased a few at once.
Not a problem though, I have more new ones in the box at another location ;)

Hey Crew,
Sorry this took so long... thanks for the motivation, John! I love seeing other people's displays, collections, and ideas so keep them coming.
Hope you guys enjoy it, as I waited 2.5 years for my best pal to create this one of a kind piece.
He's a master craftsman that can do anything from forging steel, to build a car (ground up), to masonry, to art work (professional level and in galleries.) ...that's just to give you an idea of some of his skills.
I had to wait for his work load to lessen, but I told him before I get married I need this display or she's gonna go on a cooking strike. :o  I had 30% of my kitchen cabinets filled with reels. Hey, I was single when I started filling them. ;D

Here's the Penn inlay (Oak+Maple) ... the bulk of the cabinet is made of Walnut and Beechwood.  Every piece of wood in this piece is from the great State of NY.  The walnut is something like 200-300 year old wood.
(http://i1205.photobucket.com/albums/bb428/316broadway/Reel%20Display/IMG_2253_zpsbmhdp6yv.jpg) (http://s1205.photobucket.com/user/316broadway/media/Reel%20Display/IMG_2253_zpsbmhdp6yv.jpg.html)

Never mind my Roomba, she stays busy as I am a bit of a neat freak with a touch of OCD. ;)
This shot is showing how to turn on the under cabinet LED lighting... just touch the 75th Anniversary Penn coin for on/off. I gave my pal, Steve, the coin and said to put it some where, so he did.  Yes, it sits flush.
(http://i1205.photobucket.com/albums/bb428/316broadway/Reel%20Display/IMG_2254_zpsvvuvxrht.jpg) (http://s1205.photobucket.com/user/316broadway/media/Reel%20Display/IMG_2254_zpsvvuvxrht.jpg.html)

We quickly realized this wasn't gonna cut it. Side note, the 16/0 has been changed as I was finally able to locate the proper handle for her just recently.

I couldn't be happier with my reel display... My art teacher, my mentor, my best friend did me right.
Whatcha think?
I tried to upload a video for you guys to see the details but the 4.5 minute production was too much photo bucket :-\
Thanks

What do you have on attached to the tailplates of thise 2 reels bottom, dead center?  Also, I for one would love to see a list of what you have displayed there.  Looks like you have an entire shelf of narrow reels..is there an anaversity 349, and a Sailfisher in that bunch?  Do you have any other complete sets (i.e. all Sea Hawk, Bridge City versions, or all examples of prewar take aparts).  Do you have a first year 109, or any of the other elusive 1 year models Mike mentions in his book?  Any trade reels?  Feel free to answer/list whatever you wish to share.  I can tell there was alot of effort and time put into both the collection, and the display.

Stunning Dom...thanks for sharing, and your collection is...wow.  I really like the inlay of the Penn 75th coin as well.  Please let your friend now that we are all inspired by his work.

Edit:  I've been working hard trying to get one of those darn ash trays...some are just priced too high!  I'm guessing the drawers have some nice things inside too?

Absolutely beautiful, Dom --

A true Renaissance Masterpiece from the Old School --

Excellent stock selection and contrast --

The inlay (Marquetry) is perfect and amazing --

A couple of comments from the peanut gallery, and these are only my thoughts:

Have a 1/4" piece of plate glass cut, polished on the edges, and curved on the front edges to match the arc on the front corners.  This is very inexpensive to have done -- and will protect the top surface from scratches over the years -- which will be unavoidable as reels are examined, switched around, and life happens.  The glass shop has clear plastic 3/32" nickel sized spacers to go between the glass and the surface.

Then consider this -- it may look hokey -- and the SS brushed drawer and door handles are a good match for the Penns.  However, consider installing (6) Penn 16/0 crank handle knobs -- attached to a SS drawer pull backing plate with round ends.  This would go into the same holes already drilled.  These knobs could be all one color -- or a combination of colors.  If we put the word out -- with the Worldwide reach of Alan's site -- I bet we could get some excellent condition knobs donated or available to purchase.

Best,

Fred

Thanks again guys... I love this thing too!
Dan, only two drawers have reels in them. One of them has advertising pieces and spare vintage parts. There's nothing in the drawers that is more recent than 1954 ;) ...Steve and I decided we need one more bar across the top, so you'll be seeing the, shortly. Some have lots of brassing but others are sweet.
Fred, your suggestions make good sense and will think about a glass top to protect that surface. As for the handles, that's exactly what I tried to do, but was unable to find the handle knobs.  I lost a bid on eBay for about a dozen of them (4/0-9/0) a few months back and then just decided to match the handles to the rest of my house to tie it all in. I have to take a side shot because the glass is on the sides of the cabinet as well as the front.
Thanks crew,
Dom

I appreciate the nice words guys. John, I will make a list in the very near future and catalog them while I'm at it.  Being that I recently got married and now a kid on the way, Oops, it slipped. ;) I will have to get it done soon because I see less time in my future. ::) Yes, it's a NIB 349 Ann. but no sailfisher, yet. As for the two reels in the center (good eye)... They are 2- 6/0 reels with an air valve used to crank up from the depths invented by Ralph Sanders (Nov.2nd 1965 patent).  These were the predecessor to the electric reels used today and believe these to be his 2 prototypes as I don't believe they were ever manufactured, but not positive of that fact. I can't find anything other than the patent info on these but they look wicked cool, are heavy as can be, and have a special spot in the display (mounted to my wall).
If a reel is new I typically don't touch it other than a polishing to remove finger prints.  Other than that I have worked on 95% of the reels in that display.  I need to do 2 (9/0's) and that will be all of them. I like to remove all grease/oil from the entire reel, which I've done on about 60% of them.  My reason for doing this is that my house is permanently climate controlled, there will never be staining of parts from old grease and much less maintenance.  Simply dust off the outside of the reel.   After all, I don't want any oils leaking on my precious display ;)
I'll definitely show Steve (The builder) this thread, and let him know that these comments come from some seriously talented people with some serious collections.
Thanks crew,
Dom

So many great displays here.

Sal's one off cabinet . Lots of thought and beautifully made . Double-decker wood and glass cabinet with the green , white & red rod and reel ...had to sneak that in.

Neat Plinths by Daron .

Top antique display cabinet with antique reels by Ted.

John & Dan have their growing collections displayed well .

Dom, What can i say . You win the prize for the biggest Lair..... Otto Henze would have loved to sit at a desk with that inlay. 8)

Someone said i have Penn Fever . I think it has been spreading for quite a while.

Well said, Gypsy!
I don't wanna hijack the thread as I would like to see some other displays. I like the way Sal hung his spinners and the fact that he made it with his own two hands.
I'm a fan of Daron, Dan, and Mike's different style plinths, I like how Dan incorporated  his collection into his house tastefully, and of course Ted's Pot O' Gold... It looks like it a medical cabinet of sorts and it's well stocked with treasure and clearly visible.

Wow!
Scarce, and historically significant.  It would be interesting to see a schematic or design diagram on these guys.  Sounds like a relatively simple system.  I wonder if a similar device could be made to connect a large conventional to an onboard hydo system?  Seems like their would be a market for something like this.  Especially if it was configured in such a way as to have a functionimg drag.

I guess an aircompressor is alot more cost effective then a hydro system..though these are now better, smaller, and cheaper then they were a few years ago.  The only reslly big fish I was able to land sucessfully on hydro gear were on reels with adjustable/workimg drags.  Str8 or direct drive reels will break the gear on larger fish or sharks.  Don't mean to threadjack.

Cool reels Dom.  I have the distinct feeling that you have a few other 'special' items in that collection.  Once again, thanks for sharing.

Now back on topic...
If anyone else has photos relating to the thread...please share.

Yes, sortof... it was a vane / impeller thing with a compound gear train, stepped down about a gazillion : 1 ratio. Hydro not impossible, since hydro vs pneumatic = same thing almost, with a different media. Drag would be controlled with a bypass / overload valve. Market? Well, it seems Sanders himself tried it already. Maybe, maybe not. Sanders was a very busy guy though.

We now return to the regularly scheduled thread...

Robert,  it's funny you knew about these two reels because you were the person I was going to ask if you'd be willing to take them apart and clean them up and maybe even make them functional (if they're not already.) it's definitely beyond my scope of skills, and would hate to get it apart and not be able to get it back together. I got them off ebay a few years ago.  Did you find any info out about them? If so, I would be interested in learning more about them.  Thank Bob if you speak with him, and let him know they're safe and sound. ;)

Thanks Dan, congrats to you as well. It's looking like February 17th which is perfect because I wouldn't wanna take a newborn out fishing too early ;D

Mike, you just depressed me... I feel like a kid, and if you ask my wife... I act like one too. ::)

Well congrats to Dom and Dan. I am up for adoption, so I guess this means I need to look elsewhere. lol

I thought this was a website about how to service and repair reels ??? I would credit this collector craze/disease to Mike and Ray and their combined knowledge of reels from days gone by....and of course the "Penn Bible" (Chronological history of Penn Reels) that puts their knowledge in print for great references that were previously impossible to procure.

Thanks for posting this up John, cause now every time my wife mentions my growing collection, I just click on this thread and show her pics that makes my collection pale in comparison. I owe you one John.

Dom, that is over the top phenominal display and must be a thousand times more impressive in person. Only thing I would change/add, is a drool station  :D........... Thanks for sharing

Sal, Dan, what is Ikea ??  ;)

Aiala, hI'm sure mommy will step up in the summer... if I do in the winter. ;)

Ted, I used to do the same thing with showing my wife other members collections, but it got to the point where she says, "You have more than those guys you used to show me on the reel website." LOL (true story)
Also, the drool station, AKA coffee can is now mounted to the side. ;D

Tiddler, not funny, dude. >:( ;)

I showed my pal, Steve, your comments.  He was blown away by your nice words and had a smile on his face the whole time. Thanks guys/ gals! He also told me to tell Fred that the inlay is 3/4" so if I screw it up he can sand it for the next 200 years. ;D I thought he was kidding about the 3/4" inlay, but he's serious.  He works at Arizona Iced Tea and has all the top of the line tools and materials so his xyz CNC took care of that part.

Lastly, I know ya'll don't store your reels in the kitchen cabinets like I did for 5 years so let's see the displays. It's not the size of the display... it's how it flows with the house. ;)
Thanks
Dom

Dan,
I love your friend's setup there.  Which 'Jaws' movie version is that rod and reel combo from?  The rod looks to have Mildrum guides.  Like the cabinet display as well.  Looks like he has got plenty of early Penn boxes.  I am sure he has been working at that collection for quiet dome time.

Aiala,
That is a stunning display you've got there.  I especially like the recent green side plate narrow build, and the purple/silver combo.  Looks like you have 2 narrow reels there too.  Are those 349HC reels?

These are great!  Keep 'me coming guys and gals.

Thanks! The bottom narrow reel next to the green Monofil is just a stock 49. (The original metal spool --which I replaced with an aluminum one-- is presently on its way across the ocean to Jerseymic.) The reel above it w/red plates is a 349 with a black non-numbered Tiburon frame (and spool I think); near as I can figure, a sort of "Wahoo Special" kit that's gone extinct.   :)

As requested by Mr. Dan, I am going to try to get Photobucket to cooperate for long enough to get this posted. My little transition to the other side of the room is now complete.

Here is where I started, stuck in the corner of a room not set up for Fishing Tackle display. The shelves were too deep, causing most of the boxed reels to be stuck behind the unboxed reels. Being that my Senior Moments are happening at a higher rate these days, I need a change. I was forgetting what I owned:

So, I bought some good old American Pine and built a simple wall unit that I felt would allow me to see what I have. It started with the rod rack built behind the door. I added a small white rubber bumper to prevent the door from smashing into the rods during one of my crazy, wild parties ::):

Then the shelving moves down the wall about 8 feet until I run out of room. These shelves are only about 7 inches deep and 4 1/4 inches high. That size allow for almost all reels up to 4/0. The top shelf is one inch taller than the others to allow for a bit larger reels and 12 oz. cans of beer.
The wall ends at my glass cabinet where I store all my serious collectible reels and the small liquor bottles out of the view of all those that would not want me to partake in those types of refreshments.

We now have traveled full circle an arrived back where we started. A really short trip around my 11 feet of new tackle wall.

The corner where this started now looks somewhat abandoned now; but it will not take long to fill the shelves with other things that need to come out of storage. I have spent many hours in that corner and will spend many more; but, at least I can now find some of my stuff.

QuoteGorgeous display Mike. I need to drive up and spend a couple of hours taking it all in.

Thanks Sal. What I really need is to have a tour around the Penn Plant and while we are there, I would like to have someone open the Glass cabinet in the lobby and turn around the black closed face spinning reel sitting on top of the 420 box. That reel is not supposed to exist in that color and has many of us obsessed collectors wondering about it and what model number, if any, is on the other side of the reel.

Here is the full set of rare closed face spinners in their normal colors:

And here is the problem child that is not supposed to exist, yet it sits in the Penn Plant lobby display:

So, you are welcome in my cave anytime you like. We could spend hours talking about the ins and outs of Penn reels and other brands. Soon I will have a new truck. I would like my first trip to be to the Penn Plant...............................................<:O)

I see in Picture #68 you have 2 Side Winders on the wall. 1 looks like Aluminum & the other looks like Red Baker Lite or Delrin. In December I bought a New 5 1/4" Delrin & Brass Side Winder. There are New ones being made & only 1 place sells them. No Shipping

Mike,

Those two side winders are true antiques, probably both date back to the turn of the 19th to 20th century.
The reel on the left is made by Cozzone. it is ball bearing model made out of Mahogany wood. The reel on the right is a Hell Gate, also a ball bearing model.
The Cozzone is not rare; but, they are very hard to find with the sticker intact. It is about 100 years old. I have had many; but, this one really nice so I kept it.

(http://i380.photobucket.com/albums/oo244/m3040c/Side%20Winders/Hell%20Gate--Ball%20Bearing%20Side%20Winder--aluminum%20side%20plates%20013%20640%20x%20480_zpsstfjegpv.jpg)
(http://i380.photobucket.com/albums/oo244/m3040c/Side%20Winders/Hell%20Gate--Ball%20Bearing%20Side%20Winder--aluminum%20side%20plates%20022%20600%20x%20450_zpszqq0ivgm.jpg)
The Hell Gate is a difficult find. I have seen less than a half dozen of them in my life.

I did not realize that anyone was still making these reels. The Australian Alveys are similar but mount differently to the rod.

I have a soft spot for Side Winders. When I was a kid fishing the Sheepshead Bay Party boats, the mates would use these reels and really out fish everyone on the boat with them. It is amazing what an effective fishing reel they really are in the right hands.

Bluefish Mike,

I checked out the forum on the site you sent me. Very interesting sidewinders. They only touched on the antiques. It seems they have more modern sidewinders made from Delrin and some from around the war made of Bakelite. Seems that some are even made of Lexan. I guess you can make these reels from many different materials.

Mine are retired antiques from days gone by. I cannot document the Hell Gate yet. I did find some history about the Cozzone model I have (Thanks to Phil White). It was made in the 1920's.

At 75 yrs old I do NOT have an empty drawer in any of the wife's China cabinets!!---but if I did, I would love to find it full of your surprises!!  At about 60 yrs old, I had very few reels, but they were all reels that I used. I got involved in AT com and I started buying some used Penns online just because I could and they were affordable then.  I then bought and serviced many other reels---mostly Penns.  I gave most of these reels to my son and daughter to display or use.  A few years ago SharkHunter had bought too many reels and a guy got on here with a reel--deal.  He had a 12/0 Penn with a red knob and he had it what I thought was a decent price--SH passed on the reel, but I didn't.  It showed up and it was like new on the outside except there is one exterior screw missing.  I displayed it for a while but now it sits in a box not even seeing the light of day.  I need to get is sitting on a mantle again so it can have a few more days of glory.  Since I purchased this reel, I am glad to see there are MANY people wanting these larger reels to actually USE them for fishing..   One last little note from an old man--It seems to me that the more members we have to AT. com we have lots higher prices on Ebay!!   ::) ;)

QuoteI just picked up a new display cabinet...

Nice display John, seems like your collection is growing fast.

Supply and demand create value. It seems the demand for antique Penn reels is growing, while the supply is what it is and always will be. As long as the demand continues to grow, the prices will go up. That makes me happy because it gives the hobby more dimension. Not only are we satisfying a historical curiosity by collecting, we are making future investments. It is a win / win.

I actually don't know how many 12/0's I have right now.
Its like gun collecting. If you know how many you have, you don't have enough.
I definitely need some cabinets and have been looking.

John, you have been a busy man... Now I know who I've been losing auctions to.😉
You've amassed a beautiful/respectable collection of Penn reels in record time. Keep it up, bro.
Ted, those colorful beauties are seriously eye popping. Those ain't easy to find and with matching spools and handles. You must've dated an Accurate family member to get those pieces, sweet!
Thanks for showing your treasures,
Dom

Your assortment of antique reels is astounding. I really like the big one on top with the log knob handle  :o :o

This is one of my top couple favorite threads, along with Daron's show your collections. Thoughts:

John, thanks for starting the excellent thread! That's an amazing case and so is the collection!

Ted.....That pic was just cruel. Put it away never to be seen again :) What a war chest!

Big D doesn't know how many 12/0's he has......on the one hand that's cool, however I agree with his statement if you know then you don't have enough. Up until recently when I bought an estate collection (because I still have yet to see what all's in there) I could tell you specifically every reel in my collection, which was roughly 325 at that time...when does it stop?

John - Looks great! Congrats...

TomT - I find it interesting at how many people have started collecting in such a short amount of time.  I'm new to it myself only having about 2 1/2 years of looking/buying.  Just in the past year there have been numerous pages started on Facebook along (at least 5-6 separate pages).

It seems to be a hobby that is gaining quite some momentum.

The more I learn about the history of the fishing reel the more my interests and 'wants list' expands.  It's tough to maintain focus, but fun and somehow rewarding at the same time.

It is great to see the increased inserts in learning about, and preserving some of our fishing history & heritage.

John - funny you say focus...I've really had to narrow down what I want...funds tend to just wash away when I start searching on eBay, c-list, or etsy all willy nilly.  I have picked up a few cool things in the last couple months, just finishing cleaning them up then I'll post a couple pictures of them in their new home.  I think reel collecting actually should be considered a sport considering the time and energy we all put into it.  :D

A neighbor had a garage sale.  I picked up the glass cabinet in these photos for $60.00.  I moved some stuff around and this is the result.  It has lights but the lights are set to back light something like crystal glasses or something.  It does no good for the reels.  I will try to move the lights sometime.  One of the shelves is glass.  It flexes with the reels I have on that shelf.  I stuck an empty box in the middle to keep the glass from flexing too much.  Dominick

The wife was at the Habitat for Humanity resale store, called "Re-Store" where donated construction supplies and furniture is sold and said I "needed a bigger cabinet for my stuff".  Not one to argue, she bought this cabinet for me.  Came in two pieces, upper and lower cabinet...just missing a piece of glass....Wanting to add a little color to it, I found a yellow hanger, cut off the hook part and using cup hooks, now have a place to display some lures.....Bill

yep, it was custom made on an space on the house that was suposed to be for left for a hidden small room for utility & cleaning tools, but lovely wife changed plans and ordered that for my fishing mess I mean my fishing gear.

I was going to use two of top shelfs to show off my personal reels but my reel & rod repair tools/accesories ended up taking a lot of space on the cabinet (I dont have a man cave...... yet), so my personal reels went to the drawer inside their bags, not much to show off like that but since they are working reels not shelf queens its ok

Simply awesome Dom.  It has grown quite a bit!

A couple quick questions...

What is the third larger Kingfisher?  I was under the impression there were only two models  ???

What is the Purdy little blue spool for?  Almost looks the size of a 109.

Post by: broadway on December 19, 2017, 05:41:24 PM
Thanks for the comments guys... I'm pretty proud of how it's turning out.  It has definitely grown, and my wife loves it. ::)
Dan,  The blue spool has the slightest of spreads in it, but it is a 109 spool... just a bit bluer than most.
King fisher reels come in many different varieties... Sea Ford's, Sea hawks, LB's, I believe even an oceanside has been unearthed!
The 3rd King fisher is a 250 yd Sea Ford.  The second one is the only 300 yd King Fisher I have that's a 300 yd'er and it's a Bridge City.
Thanks
Dom
PS- Notice the first gen Senator set. Where the lit up "Penn" is are the first year 1/0-3/0 then skip one rung of Coronados and Baysides and you'll find 4/0-16/0 in first gen form.  All are 100% functional, era correct, and have been gone through with a fine tooth comb. ;)

Bill, let the missus know that I had about 200 reels in my kitchen cabinets until the day before we got married... that was part of the deal.  Needless to say, as long as they aren't in the kitchen she's a happy lady.  The moral of this story is to put your reels where you know your wife doesn't want them, so when you get them out of there she's just happy they're gone. ;D
LOL, Tours are whenever you get to town.  You and Nancy can come over for a nice meal... we'll start with the Albacore and crackers and maybe some Albacore and Salmon steaks for dinner... that you sent us. ;)
I really appreciate the nice words guys... my wife reminds me that I put an awful lot of time in on hunting and restoring these relics so it's nice to see others appreciate it.
I admire Brian's site showcasing his beautiful collection all the time.  Talk about an amazing collection! :o
I would love to see Mike's and Ray's some day too!  Hawaii John, John, Dan, George, and a bunch of other guys on here have some pretty impressive stuff that I only dream of being the caretaker of... would love to see them.

My wife picked up the curio on the left for $150 from a craft store lady closing out her inventory. Beautiful curio in new condition with doors on both sides and a one piece etched & beveled front glass. The one on the right is a cool old doored book/display case.

The curio, showing closeups of the top & bottom halves, houses ABU, Zebco, ABU Cardinal & Zebco Cardinal reels. The book/display case is home to some American Classic IVs, which are an upgraded US reproduction of the ABU/Zebco Cardinal 4, and the Japanese made ABU Garcia Cardinal "Green Lines", "Cs", "Green & Cream Special Editions" and "Royal Pluses".

Those two cabinets constitute about 1/4 of my open face spinning reel collection.

Tommy, you are blessed with a great wife and soul mate who obviously supports your passion if she bought you the cool curio which fits perfect for your needs. Plus keeping them behind glass keeps them from collecting dust while being displayed for viewing.

Merry Christmas Tommy and thanks for sharing

Beautiful cabinet and collection Tom, but looks like you could use another curio. ;D
I like how the ones on the right are spaced, the left looks good too, but the reels could use a little elbow room :).
Nice to have a wife that understands how crazy we are, I do too.
Thanks for sharing those beauties Tom.

Thanks guys! Yes, my wife is a sweetheart, and gift from God! What makes it even better is she also loves to fish!  ;D

Dom, that is one great looking cabinet and collection.  8)

There's a space on the bottom shelf of the curio for a ABU Cardinal 70 that I still don't have. They are a cheaper made version that was only sold in Europe and a little tough to find over here, and there's a little room on the top shelf for a couple of US made Zebco Omegas that I have but haven't cleaned & serviced yet, but yes, Sal, they are packed in there plenty tight. Once those spaces are filled there won't be room for any more. If they breathed they would probably suffocate.  ;)

Brett, I've got a couple more of the Japanese made 6 & 7 hundreds that need to be gone through to fill the space on the bottom shelf of the right cabinet. I especially like the "fish" boxes they came in, more so than the reels themselves. I think those boxes are really pretty and unique.

Steve,  :-*  ;D

Thanks for posting the photos of Big Red, Daron.
Chris, you may have seen it with the butterscotch handle that it originally came with, which may be why you're asking if it's a one-off?  I put the red handle on for obvious reason (it looks right) but I still have the original handle that I bought with it just in case.
Once I figure out how to post photos from my mac after the holidays I'll get some more detailed photos up of some of my special babies.

That red handle knob really could have been the original one.....it was all up to whoever assembled it, as the assembler would normally have several colors to choose from back in the day.

Most the red tinted knobs had swirl patterns, but the solid blood red color of the knob is not common at all and is absolutely perfect for big red !! I never get tired of gazing at that beauty. Thanks Dom and Daron for sharing

Merry Christmas to the Ohana !!

My family started tent camping there around 2002 and made it a yearly trip....last time we went was about 3 years ago, I pulled my redneck condo down from Sacramento and met the family and two others who had never been to Jalama. The sign is a repro and a great reminder to the good times we had there.  You are right the Jalama Burger has got to be the best along with the California sunset.  I've tried fishing there but the current always seems to rip in that area.  Want to go back this year and we will be back in the tents as the condo has been sold.  Bill

I don't like dusting them all the time so I set mine on a shelf with the bail arm or plate down and the crank/handle knob keeping it from tipping over. I keep mine behind glass doors in a case so they stay clean. I learned that lesson when my wife said she wouldn't dust them.  ;D

Here are some pictures of my displays/tackle room.  The main display unit has a long history in my family.  My dad built it out of solid redwood lumber in 1969 as an entertainment center.  I re-purposed it years ago.  I recently lined the boxes with 1/4" bamboo plywood and added LED lighting.

My collection of reels includes examples from E. vom Hofe, J. vom Hofe, LA Coxe, Bronson-Coxe, Hardy, Stead, Zwarg, Penn, Ocean City, Arthur Kovalovsky, Oscar Kovalovsky, API, Pflueger, and Fin-Nor.  My rods include examples from Tycoon Tackle, vom Hofe, Leonard, Gurrieri, Herschel, Lott Bros, Neptuna, Kovalovsky, Hardy, Lee's, Schultz, and Shaver.  I love tackle with provenance, and have items fished by John Olin, Bill Carpenter, John Manning, Bill Fagen, Lou Gehrig, R.C. Grey, Steve Zuckerman, George Cutts, and Curt Whiticar.  As far as size, I have reels ranging from a tiny ½-0 Zwarg Maximo to the Penn "Lochness", and a massive Standard Type I 22/0 Oscar Kovalovsky.

Instead of focusing on collecting tackle from one particular maker, my goal was to have a few good examples from each of the major players, spanning the entire history of big game fishing.  In terms of vintage, I have tackle dating from the 20's through the early 90's.  My "newest" reel is a stunning custom 2-speed wide-spool 12/0 reel Oscar Kovalovsky made for Steve Zuckerman in the latter part of 1990.

I try to maintain about 40 rods and 40 reels, due to space and financial limitations.  Right now, I am WAY over, and will be selling off a portion of my collection.

Finally, if I passed up on a purchase just because somebody told me I was paying too much for it, this tackle room would be entirely empty!!

Pictures will be attached in 5 separate posts.  Here's 1 of 5

Enjoy!!
John

Thanks, everyone!

Steve, you're welcome in my home, anytime!  Yes, we need to get together with Randy and go fishing, again!

Sal, I have an annual June BBQ every year at my house.  All tackle collectors are invited.  I also invite a lot of my spearfishing and fishing friends.  Everyone brings tackle to sell/trade/show off.  Wives and kids are welcome.  We always have a good time.  I post an announcement every year on the ORCA board.  Next year, I will include Tani.  Would love to have you join us!

Ted, yes, that is an old fighting chair made by the Matthews Company out of Ohio, a major builder of boats back in the day.

Neat picture, Mike!  That set of Tycoon rods in the case were custom made for John Olin, of Olin Corp/Winchester fame.  Each rod is inscribed with his name.

John Taylor, now what reel with two handles could you possibly be referring to??!!  ;)

I've read this thread 3-4 times, admiring some of the collections being shown, but with the aim to come up with a display system.
There are some absolute beauties on this thread, hard acts to follow !!  And credit to everyone's displays.

I've been allocated a room, I had already actually claimed it, put in a full length timber desk and do work related paper work etc,
I think her indoors has realised, this reel collection fad is here to stay !

I work with Glass and mirrors, so I'm picking the overall theme may turn that way,  who knows.

But thanks for everyone's inspirations, great food for thought...............

Dusted off the shelves, so dusting off John's excellent old thread (I thought it was Dom, but it was his cabinet in it), which deserves way better than to stay dormant three years! There are a lot of new members since 2018 that need to see these. Daron's "collections" thread has gotten legs again, so I'm gonna post a few new pics here since it's a cabonet sort of. Shelf, really, but at some pernt I'll add plexi doors, and then it'll be a cab.

Mods, please right the ship. This is the best agglomertaion photo I have, other things being variously in totes, on rods in racks, etc. etc.

Second photo zooms on the pair of 49A's and ProGear from brother Ted, a gentleman and scholar, and the 5001 DQ from Wayne by way of Fred: the latter being a gentleman and scholar as well. As to the former, Dominick may argue to the jury he is neither, but he's been very good to me. The DQ will be getting spooled up this weekend to venture to OBX here directly.

A few to note in Pic 1: The Iron Man Accurate 6/0; Of course, the silver, blue, and green sets of Cortez pieces that aren't currently on sticks (the 9/0's and 6/0 are Abrams tanks); Matched set of teal Peers (took awhile to get that together); PC Jiggy; Mint LB 60 from Fred; Mint 190 I found for $15; Teaser reel built mostly of Ted parts; Abu 8000 two-speed Alan built for me, where I upgraded knob from the little tinker-toy, stock one because the reel is rashed from previous owner, and will be fished; Pre-war 66 from Daron; Mint 1/0; Sailfishers (thanks, Greg!).

There are many, many other pieces, parts and reels in there to which the Ohana had an ohanda in the makings of, and I thank you all- at the very least for showing the way as to what is possible from Day One with a handle wrench.

Also: The 501 with green spool has provenance from Sal, to match the handle he made me. That spool convo was the last (of many)  communications I had with him, as he went to the hospital shortly thereafter. I had a NIB SS spool he was hunting for a build but he wouldn't accept it gratis, tho I would've given it freely and still been substantially in his debt, such a generous person was he. No, Sal would only trade, asking what color I wanted, and that happened to be green, in my mind to match the handle I had from him previously. At the time I believe he had the two green PC spools extant. Alan C. would have to weigh in as to if ever made more, but I had one and Sal the other, and that was all right by me. Should the Tib frame become available in silver again, I will complete that build with the green plates I have for it.

I didn't check to see which pic was first. Descending: all Jiggy's what aren't on rods; third, Senators and teaser 49; fourth, Long Beaches, Mariners, Sailfishers; Penn Spinners and Abu's, bottom is miscellaneous stuff, Daiwa, Shimano, Garcia, others. There are also the Squidders, Beachmasters, Surfmasters, Monofil mixed around in there somewhere.

Done, John —

Adjusted the photo to upright.

Great collection display!

Couple of things —

That DAM Quick 5001 is rated by Alan Hawk, as one of the most capable HD Saltwater Spinning reels ever produced by any manufacturer — then or now.  It is the "Godfather" of Salt spinners.

There are (2) versions — yours is the HD High Speed version.  There is also a Lower-Geared version when very large fish are targeted.  The only clue to the low-gear ID is that there is no HS (high speed) sticker on the exterior.

As for Sal — he is with me every day.

Last week, I looked back over some of my personal messages — there were 468 from and to Sal.

We provided each other reels, parts, advice, encouragement, ideas, and friendship over the years.  NEVER was a dime exchanged between us.

The only way to get Sal to accept a reel or parts — was to just send it to him.

He became interested in DAM Quick reels because of their quality and engineering.  Lots of conversations after that.

Best Always,

Fred

Here is what I did with 2X6's top shelf - Long Beach, then Senators,  Surfmaster, Baymasters and Squidders,  Talls in one section (249, 49, 130),  level winds and jigmasters. ...

About 2/3 of the standard style numbered reels! Although there seems to be a never ending variation of capacity and modals in the early productions so this project will probably never be completed.

Attempting 1 of each..

It's a sickness with no vaccine!

Hey, whatever works to get them outta the "old ladies" hair.
My kitchen cabinets were full till I got my display set up.
Nice job, and good luck on your illness... it's chronic ;)
Best,
Dom

We picked this cabinet up at an estate sale.  I was planning on building a display and had started milling some cypress but that project is on hold now.  I'll get glass shelves and add interior lights soon.

Old furniture (what I call old) is going pretty cheap these days.  "The kids" don't care for it..they like mid-century-modern stuff....which is old to them.
