Title: Shimano embraces Tani-do (The Way of Tani) :)

Shimano is using a new treatment inside their reels called "Core Protect". If you look at the image below it appears to be similar to Corrosion-X HD that has been sprayed inside on all surfaces of the reel:

They even emphasize that by having it on the flat mating surfaces of the body that it forms a nice seal from splashes. Who knew?

Yes, grasshoppers, they have been paying attention and know cost effective preventative care when we show it to them. :)

Of course, the user is supposed to not touch the stuff and send it back to SHimano for a new application LOL.

;D  ;D  ;D

The stuff on the edges looks like silicone.

If they would just have seals and o rings like they do in the wp and under water cameras I buy.

penn also did the Alantaniway on the fathom reels, they come well greased on all metal parts and some grease on the walls too.

They also have plastic washers under the heads of the SS screws.

Yes, this started with the Penn SSV though and that is some 3 years back that they started greasing all surfaces on reels coming out of the factory.  ;)

Just out of curiosity, is that a Stella in the picture? I noticed a washer here that was not in the 4000 SW that I just serviced, and that reel had a strange and really random grinding sensation to it. I took the reel apart a dusin times, but never got rid of the sensation when reeling.

Just wondering if there might have been a washer missing somewhere (though nothing in the schematic indicated it), or if my theory on some of the gears being uneven is correct.. time will tell, I guess.

One of the guys in a local tackle shop cornered me the other day asking my opinion on a TP they had on the shelf.  I had a look at it and noted the  IMHO excessive play in rotor, pinion and mainshaft lateral and end float.  I asked him for the Saragosa next to it (cheaper reel) and it was smoother and tighter in all respects.  He was a bit nonplussed, I said that I was not surprised.  It seems to be a a bit of a crap shoot when buying Shimano reels and it behooves one to try a few of the batch to pick a winner.  I can only put it down to the random assembly practices at the factory; it seems the only way to get a consistent product is to buy a Stella.  Failing that you can spend a fair bit of time and shims setting them up for an acceptable balance of freespin, tightness and gear noise.
cheers
Steve
