Title: Vintage 9/0 Hot rodding
Post by: Shark Hunter on February 26, 2016, 02:16:54 PM
I have a reel from a new member here. His name is Ryan. He has a reel that belonged to his grandfather he wants to soup up.
He trolls for wahoo with heavy weights and he said this reel can't hold them while trolling.
I will take care of that.
Its an oldie, but a goodie.
The first obstacle is finding a one piece spool for this Dinosaur to handle some bigger drag numbers.
I searched for a few days and was starting to worry. These old bushing reels cant use newer spools designed for bearings.
The author of our Penn Bible, Mr. Mike C. offered a trade for the three piece in this one.
It should arrive today.
I have all the parts in stock to turn this old reel into a fishing machine. Stay tuned.

Daron, is Ryan getting a Corteze/Tom H. Frame on this build?????

Of Course!
Full Monty on this one.
Tanking a 9/0 is probably the most expensive of any other Senator because of the frame addition.
You are talking $400 in parts.
When finished, I think the 9/0 packs more punch than any other model.
Frame, ss sleeve and double dogs, BP Gears, insert, SS handle, yoke and 5/0 Kokelar grip.
You will have a 9/0 that can handle 50 lbs of drag easily.
That is a lot to hold on to.
I don't do a lot of custom builds for members. It is too much of a chore if I can't keep it.
Ordering all the parts from at least seven different members is not an easy task for a newcomer.
Hey,
Its for his grandpa's reel, and this guy has a passion for fishing.
Just paying it forward. ;)

Daron your a good guy. I recently did the same build. Only difference was I did it with the Penn steel gears, not Alan C's gears. So I was able to save some $$$ there. This is the biggest reel in my Arsenal. It's pretty darn impressive. Can't wait to see the end result👍🏻

Im in  ;) Daron is spot on. Holding on to that at high drag wouldn't be recommended. We mainly troll with bent butts rod and fight the fish from the rod holder with a leash. We troll any where from 11-16 knots and when we have a hook up we dont slow down. Its been noted that if you slow down the weight will drop causing the hook to pull. Tension is key, I cant wait to have this reel back to be pulling some big weights and wahoo lures and hear that loud clicker go off. Daron is a stand up guy for doing this and I cant thank him enough for upgrading this American made machinery. If anybody is interested in an episode of "reel time" Palm beach high speed wahoo fishing edition, feel free to check it out at this link. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fzsTc376SDk This episode features a guy by the name of E money and is a very well respected wahoo fisherman in our area.

I have built the same for guys using the stock steel gears. It saves a bunch of money.

I watched a show on tv that showed them trolling for Wahoo in that way. They hook up and just reel them in. In the show they weren't big Hoo's like we get here in the Gulf. I assume big ones can be brought in the same way. They were using a 9/0 and a larger Senator reel.

I can see a hoo being caught on my build in the near future :D you're right majority of our Florida east coast hoos arent very big. Most are 20-30lbs with a few 50s. Maybe il get the chance to visit san sal/rum cay or harbor cay in the future.  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3uLYJuN_FOA

Sorry to hijack the thread Daron. I promise no more vids hahah lets get back to 9/0 talk

Extreme interest on this one.  Point one is counter balanced handle, never seen that on 9/0.  Point two: I'm building two 9/0 this weekend. Point three I built my high speed hoo trollers a couple weeks back. Start a thread for that as we are just getting into that piece.   I will share my setup to troll high speed and quickly switch off too bridle planer for 6-7 knots.

Regard

Thorhammer

Sweet thorhammer. Are your high speed wahoo trollers 9/0s? If so do you use the front rod brace? Due to the upgraded frame i am considering not getting one. When i got this reel the brace was missing. Will gladly accept others opinion on this too.

I set mine up on standard width 80's, because I had them and scored a pair matching bent butt penn rods on the cheap a month ago. I set my full-on 9/0 up to shark from shore: 600yds of 100 lb braid topped with a couple hundred 80 mono.  The other 9/0 will be set similarly but in stock configuration. I'm also missing the braces but they will indeed be on next Scott's order. I mean, you go full monte and leave off the brace can you? :)

I've never encountered a 9/0 with the brace, that wasn't put on there by the owner.  It's only $18 from SBT, so a small investment to help strengthen the reel.  I plan on putting one on mine, and my 114HLW.

Are you going to be fishing this reel from a harness?  I don't think the front brace does anything unless you are pulling on the top of the reel from a harness.  I would definitely use the front brace if planning to use a harness.  But the brace only supplies support in tension.  If you are fishing with no harness and a front brace, then it seems that any flexing of the reel or real seat caused by the fish pulling hard would only cause the front brace to lose some of its tension.  I.E. it wouldn't be doing anything.  At least as far as I can tell.

[/quote] Where are you going to attach it on your 114HLW? There are no front lugs on 114H or HLW.

Before I even start, I need to make sure the one piece spool fits.
And it Does! Thank You Mike! You really saved my butt on this one! ;)
Doesn't look too bad for being 50 years old. Are those Bronze gears?
Oh, that is rust. These gears are toast. They served this reel well.
All ready for assembly. Plate cut for double dogs, insert in the BP gear, parts polished, upper Delrin cut, Ready to fit the sleeve and I hit a snafu. >:(
The bridge has a smaller post. I'm not going to let that stop me. To be Continued.

I plan on attaching the leash to the reel clamp. I like the looks without a brace but when it comes down to it I don't want to gamble with a reel so special. Even tho I agree with you Bryanc, im thinking il be going the "better safe than sorry" route. Il be getting a brace. Wow it shined up beautifully!! Sorry about the issue. I know you'll come through on that and for that i am grateful.

If it were any other Senator that gets the Hot Rod treatment, I would have had a spare.
My Man Fred already hooked me up.
One thing I need to add about this build. There is a hole on either side of these bushing reels that doesn't quite line up with Tom's frame.
It takes all of five seconds to remedy. The correct drill bit through the rings and plate.

Beautiful job on the reel Daron. I have a couple just like that sans the drag insert. Maybe I should "upgrade" my reels... ::)

Are the inserts still available for the 115s?
