I have a Shimano Crucial, 7ft, rated 10-17lb that I love and didn't want to give up. The guide wraps started coming apart after being used nearly everyday for the last 14 years. The sun, and UV just took its toll on the expoy. So I bought a new set of Fuji "concept" alconites for it. The rod was finished in black. I stripped it down to bare graphite, then tinted some DII with mallard green mineral tint and refinished it. The cork and reel seat had no issues, Now I'm doing my first ever cross wrap on it. It's not finished yet, but wanted opinions from my ohana on how it looks. I don't have a good camera, so excuse the cell phone pics (Nexus 6).

Thanks! Still have a ways to go to close it. I work on it when I can. I'm learning LOTS doing this. I do rod repair on the Sac Delta, but it's usually "plain-jane" stuff like replacing guides or an occasional hook keeper. Being my rod, I felt like I needed to "stretch" a bit.

Pretty advanced closed wrap there. Pattern seems just a little bit 'busy' to me, but the wraps look tight, and pretty square. I bet the finsh will give this pattern alot of depth. you can tell alot of thought, and time went into it.

Way to challenge yourself for a first wrap! You're right at the point where it's starting to close--and if I may suggest--it helps to focus on the space left in the open areas, i.e. those blue diamonds where the rod blank is showing through. They should be roughly the same size going from tip to butt.
In this case, you may find it necessary to pack the threads that surround the smaller diamonds a lot tighter--so as to increase the open areas; while burnishing the thread around the larger diamonds--such that the pattern spreads out a bit more. Keep up the good work.

Thanks Mo! The hard part was figuring out how to compensate for the rod taper during the layout of the crosses. I actually had some one point me to a Excel spread sheet that just had me plug in the numbers, and it calculated it for me within .5mm. The rest is just tedium :D (jk). I can only work on it for about an hour or so before my old eyes start buggin'. Then I have to step back and take a break.

I was going to do the same with mine but havent decided yet
That one got cut off because it didn't look right. The snowflake I was working on in black and rattan was also cut off because the rattan turned dark brown after the second coat of CP.
I have started over with a different pattern and different colors now that I have a larger selection of colors. When I finish it I will post.
