Title: Show your favorite "Shelfie"
Post by: Maxed Out on October 12, 2016, 01:30:20 AM
Seems like we all have our "fishing" reels, and "shelfie" reels. I'm a Penn guy(in case nobody noticed) ;), and have Penns from pre war to modern day models, but the one that is my pride and joy is a reel I've always endeared. The 1940's long beach 60. It will always be my favorite, and although I have a few, there is one that sticks out from the crowd. The 1942 long beach 60 with clamp seat. I doubt it would fetch $100 on eBay, but it's priceless to me.

Please show your one "favorite shelfie" older or modern day, we love em all and want to see yours ;)

Dang, I forgot all about Nessie. Looks like Nessie resides in plain view for guests to admire. Love those plastic jigmaster/goodyear tires LOL ;D ;D

Wow Ted...that LB60 with the clamp stand is immaculate! I've come across the early clamp stands for the LB65...but until today I was oblivious to the 60. And Daron...Nessie is too cool...love it. It's hard for me to pick a favorite, but as far as something you won't see everyday, my hippie mottled 285 Delmar widened with Long Beach 65 parts is a dandy. 8)

Great gobs of goose grease  :o :o......Mo has been holding out on us. A good nickname for that reel would be phsychadelic 60's. :D :D

I really like that reel Mo.
Very Cool Find.
Ted, Nessie is actually on top of the safe.
You can't hardly see her for the reels in front, but I know where she lives. ;)

Mo is right, it's hard to pick a fav. But, I guess mine is a big Ocean City Long Key 600 yard reel. It has a cool box, swivel harness lugs, power handle and a full spool of linen. I keep it on a book shelf in my living room just so I can see it.

I'm going to think about this question for a bit...truly a tough decision to make.

These are some of my favorite threads...we get to learn about a persons favorite show reel...each person will pick their's for an individual reason...the same reel will never result in the same reason for that individuals fondness of the piece.   Essential we get to peek into soul of the person who is showing the photo.  Then again...maybe I'm thinking about this a little too deep  ::)

I actually don't much care for the whole concept of a "shelfie", because in theory I'd like to fish with every last reel that I own. Still, I do have a few unique/scarce items which really shouldn't be fished, primary amongst which is this rarity, a near-new South African 49A Super Mariner in the original box with the price label still intact:

But I'm over it now.   :'(

Randy, don't lose hope! Remember, I only got it because some unwitting sad sack neglected to put the 'A' after the '49' on their eBay posting.

Believe me, it can happen again. Just keep a sharp eye out.  ;)

this reel must be called the Chameleon.. it becomes invisible on any enviroment, you only see the surroundings but not the reel per se.

well I dont have any proper shelfie reel, all of them are for fishing but on a double thinking I have this pair on one of my office cabinets

they need another clean job to get the shine on them again, they work but I have never put any line on them since the day I found them (on different years) on flea markets

Tough for me to pick just one, but right now my favorite 2 'shelfies' would probably have to be the boxed OC Panama City s 12/0, and the unboxed Panama City 10/0...

(http://i779.photobucket.com/albums/yy77/Tightlines666/IMG_9929_zps9re4uhde.jpg) (http://s779.photobucket.com/user/Tightlines666/media/IMG_9929_zps9re4uhde.jpg.html)

(http://i779.photobucket.com/albums/yy77/Tightlines666/IMG_9934_zpst1iwdc3j.jpg) (http://s779.photobucket.com/user/Tightlines666/media/IMG_9934_zpst1iwdc3j.jpg.html)

(http://i779.photobucket.com/albums/yy77/Tightlines666/IMG_9935_zpsdf2i8qwo.jpg) (http://s779.photobucket.com/user/Tightlines666/media/IMG_9935_zpsdf2i8qwo.jpg.html)

(http://i779.photobucket.com/albums/yy77/Tightlines666/IMG_9932_zps7cm5q3in.jpg) (http://s779.photobucket.com/user/Tightlines666/media/IMG_9932_zps7cm5q3in.jpg.html)

(http://i779.photobucket.com/albums/yy77/Tightlines666/IMG_9931_zpsvikokkmw.jpg) (http://s779.photobucket.com/user/Tightlines666/media/IMG_9931_zpsvikokkmw.jpg.html)

(http://i779.photobucket.com/albums/yy77/Tightlines666/IMG_9936_zpsfgx9kzhf.jpg) (http://s779.photobucket.com/user/Tightlines666/media/IMG_9936_zpsfgx9kzhf.jpg.html)

The unboxed reel is a Panama, 10/0 (later referred to as the no.120), Ca. 1937

It appears to be a first year model, with an early log Penn Log Knob handle.  It has the old style star, drag, rotating harness lugs, and drag.  This reel is rated to hold 600yds of no.24 thread (75lb test).

The boxed reel is a Panama, 12/0 (no.121), ca. Early 1937

This appears to be a transition reel since it has some characteristics depicted in the 1937 catalog  (rotating harness lugs, star style, drag, oiler, handle arm), but it is badged (which did not appear until the 1938 catalog).  Curiously the reel is lacking all of the other features depicted in the 1938 catalog.  The handle knob has been replaced, and appears to have origionally belonged to a Coxe.  This reel is rated to hold 750 yds of no. 24 thread  (75lb test).

John

There is a drum brake assembly in the housing under the handle. The wheel is threaded onto a shaft that is attached to the brake shoe. The wheel is basically the drag preset. Once you have the wheel; adjusted where you want it, the lever will adjust the drag. It is super smooth, quick and easy. Brilliant engineering! IMHO

Mike & Sal,

The Atalanta is very special to me as it has the USA/Australia connection. Lawrence fished with the biggest names of Game Fishing in OZ in 1938 .There are no production number records of the Atalanta reels but the thinking is less than 50 in Total .

Wow, you guys are blowing this thread up way beyond my comprehension.

All those reels are fantastic and very well preserved. John has been holding out on us. I say we pay him a visit and see what else he is hiding.

Ray, the story behind that reel is worth a million bucks. The picture dates itself when I noticed his wife wearing a couple whole mink over her shoulder like they were her pets.  :o :D  Nowadays that's not kosher unless you live in the outback Lol...I also notice the reel has modern day line on it, like someone planned on using it. Seems likely you rescued it from obscurity and possible abuse.

I've always been a sucker for the 9/0 - think I got caught up in the folklore of the bigger senators

this one is long gone  :'( :'(  among others, but it sure looked good  :o :o on the shelf while it was there

every time I looked at it I felt one step closer to using a reel like that myself, man can dream one day

The Great Maudu,

Good Luck finding an Atalanta . You might also find one in the US .

There probably are less than 50 Atalantas of all the different sizes.

I only have 2 Aussie Game reels and I found them both in the US . The second is a Neptuna made by LT Willis. Not saying there are no game reels here , there are , just not many and what there is usually costs an arm and a leg.

well, I dont have many shelfies but if I have to chose one, at this moment my favorite would be the Garcia Mitchell 305 (lefty), I just love the tiny reel and heavy, made outta 100% metal parts, I got it from my man Gregg some many moons ago, its right now sit on a piece of whale bone.

last weekend I got a nice number of old reels that will also be shelfies but I dont have more whale bones pieces to put them there too, so, right now they are just on the desk around my mitchell 305

Not on the Shelf, but mine is this 16/0 Kovalovsky that was passed down from my grandfather mounted to his Tycoon rod.  My icon here is this rod and reel with him and a Wedgeport Bluefin from the late 30's. The icon is the same photo hanging between the two rod reel combo's in my living room.  This Kovalovsky is the one  that was reverse engineered as the model for the Von Fritschen & Darling knock-offs from about 20 years ago.

My wife recently painted the downstairs powder room and wanted me to put some rustic looking shelves above the John. She said I could decorate one shelf with old fishing reels, but they needed to be small. I added the plugs also, some of the first ones I ever bought. We have  a Shakespeare, Southbend, Crown and Pleuger represented.

Mo, That's a pretty nice flagship reel !
I've been lucky enough to get some nice reels over my short journey and am taking a fancy to the old Senators as well,
I agree, that they cost a tad more than the Ebay specials and require some sweet talking to her indoors when the opportunity arises.
But that's the beauty of this place, when people like Chris and others show us there collections and show us that our desired reels are out there !
Thanks to all for showing us there favourite "shelfie"     Great thread

I just got a really weird and not much famous penn reel from an ohana bro, a penn 2000 baitcaster 2-speed low profile reel.
its not like new as yours but its in really great shape for having almost 40 years and being made outta graphite.
my reelhead devil want to open the reel and the angel reelhead want me to leave it alone, let's wait who would win the battle.
this should be a nice partner for the Ted Williams baitcast reel

IMHO both are correct Rudy

The foldout leaflet pictured was used for a few years and penn is known for using same illustrations for many years, even though minor changes had occurred.

I know the sideplates on this one are original to this reel, and correct box

Every time I see that red reel I am amazed. Even Mr. Herbert Otto Henze was impressed and said it had to be an experimental model and believe me, Mr. Henze is not an easy man to impress. That Red 9/0 wins the Oscar this year for Best All Around Penn Reel! None can even come close to the special feel this 9/0 brings to the Silver Screen. You hit it out of the park with this one Dom!!!

Mo,  LOL, It's not that bad... it's a 2009 17" Mac Powerbook.  If they (MAC) made 17" laptops still I'd have a new one already, but thy don;t and I haven't had to succumb to the 13" or 15" screens as of yet but he end is near for this one.
Mike, That's really neat to hear that Mr. Herbert Henze thinks it might have been an experimental reel.  Now that you mentioned it do you think it's worth it to open her up again to see if the gears are for a high speed series like the 112H, 113H, and 114H?
If "Big Red" wins the Oscar then I have a speech prepared.  "I would like to thank all of the members/moderators from the greatest website in the world, Alan Tani.com,  who made it possible for me to recognize this reel as a special piece of Penn history, and for giving me the confidence it took to open her up and service her properly for more generations to enjoy her beauty and uniqueness."
Happy to see you guys still digging Big Red.  We enjoy being her caretakers at "La casa de demasiados carretes." LOL
I bet there are lot more cool reels out there... whip 'em out boys! ;D

OK, I had to dust off the old photos. This is impossible to document. I have asked Mr. Henze about it and he does not know why it exists. All the history is speculative as to whether it is a Patent submission build or simply the first Penn reel. I like to think of it as the first Penn, which answers the question of which came first, the Model "F" or the Model "K". What I can say is it is the only Model F prototype frame I have seen that is chrome plated, missing the logo, having a through riveted clicker spring and what I feel is a impossible to duplicate chrome plated Ocean City style clicker button that is riveted. The internals are crude in terms of straight cut gears and no spool bearing inserts. The spool bearing thread directly into the Bakelite. This one is a true first.

Mike, it never gets old looking at that baby. It raises soooo many questions to say the least.
Did you acquire that through a private sale or ebay or other?  Just curious how you spotted it to be a "Penn reel?" being it's so different from the other model f's?
Thanks for sharing it here on this thread where it belongs.
Benni, I would say no one used it other than to test it "in house" is my guess.
Dom
PS- Benni, that's an early '34 coronado with head plate screws... great find!

Those Coronados with the screwed head plates are sort of rare. They are a transition reel. Not too many of them exist.

The Model F prototype came to me through a friend. He was one of the authors of the Penn history article in the 2005 Penn catalog. I do not know how he got the reel; but, I do know he was very well connected with people in the Penn factory before I was and he had a good amount of very special items. He basically needed the money. I believe he contacted a few people; but, since he lived near me, I was able to go directly to his house the following day and buy it from him quickly. It was not cheap. He had a price in mind. When I asked him how he came up with a value he told me that he wanted to get enough money to buy a new AR 15 rifle. So I bought it and he got his new gun. I think I get the better part of the deal.

These are not "new" finds. But they are new to me. If Dom posts his model F we can get all of them all on one page!

Those are some of the nicest survivor prototypes "K's" around. They are also very correct. Beautiful reels.
