Updated on 7/4/2018

Finally, the US Custom just released my shipment of this product, and it will be arrived in FL tomorrow.

All paid orders will start shipping out from tomorrow.

Also, I have been thinking on this 4th of July. A person can not be greedy, it is time to give back to the community. So here is what I am going to do.

1.) For every this JigMaster kit is sold, I will donate $10.00 to the "Wounded Warrior Project" (https://www.woundedwarriorproject.org/donate (https://www.woundedwarriorproject.org/donate)) for our Vets. I will be in touch with "Wounded Warrior Project" representative tomorrow on that.

2.) I am going to build a JigMaster 501 for Alan Tani with this kit and all my JigMaster parts I am selling. No donation is required from any member. If any money is received for this reel, that money will go straight to the "Wounded Warrior Project".

Hi Guys,

Great idea! There's times when I'm usin' mine, that I gotta(wanna) cast, an it takes a few practice casts n' adjustments before I can do it without gettin' a backlash. Cast control beyond the spool tension knob an' my thumb really helps with other reels I got. This'ed be a good incentive for me to finally try some Alum. sideplates for onea my Penns.

I have a couple on ABU 6500's from England.  I installed them for surfcasting.  Easily adjustable, even during flight.  However, it required drilling the end plate.  I had no problem with doing it on an cheap ABU side plate.  CC Plate will never get drilled in my hands! :)  But having it pre-drilled, or magnet ready, might be a good thing for those of use that suck at distance casting...my 2 cents

Hi Andy,

It will have the mag control knob and components inside the side plate. The only requirement is the spool must be non-plastic. Nothing will need to install on the spool at all.

Thanks,

Yes Alan most people would like more cast control with these reels. As they are there is no cast control adjustment other that tightening the left side bearing.

awesome idea, not fan of the jigmaster, but with all the current SS upgrades and sideplates and now this I will find a cheap donor reel to make it a project.

go for it Alan,

yes Allan! yes, yes, yes n yes! In my opinion any of these metal side plates need them if you're casting with them.I guess the metal side plates hold the spool shaft firmer (less tolerance) and I get better free spool or so it seems.

It could be end up the left side plate with the frame in one piece and right side plate.

I always frowned on any form of cast control, but for the past 8 years have magged each and every one of my reels.
So yes, any reel will benefit  from being magged.    Even those with centrifugal systems I change to magnetic, but this is a personal preference.

Alan, have you considered making the left side plate/frame assembly available separately from the right side plate for those of us that already have an Al right side plate? My CC Jiggy plates are great, but there's no mag cast control.

Hi Sid,

The left sideplate/frame can not work with any other aluminum sideplate. It sells in a set, but the left sideplate/frame can be used with the PENN original sideplate with the ring.

We have to go back and work out some other details, but we think we got it. The following is a 3D CAD drawing. The mag knob will add in later. I am waiting for a sample to be made and tested, so I can make 200 sets (100 sets as Jigmaster 500 and 100 sets as Jigmaster 501). I am still thinking about the colors to be made.

Here are few screenshots on this item. A sample is being made now, and it will be sent to me for testing.

Now, the question will be what colors it should be anodized for this item. Any idea??? Please post your suggestions.....

This item package will include the following:

1.) left side plate with frame.
2.) right side plate.
3.) stainless steel reel foot with 4 screws.
4.) 2 ABCE 5 ball bearings.
5.) 2 bearing caps.
6.) left side plate inside items as shown.
7.) clicker
8.) magnetic knob and magnets
9.) spool with spool shaft.
10.) handle bar.

I don't have the price yet. I am hoping that it will be less than $200.00

Interesting design there.  I hope testing goes well.  Will this reel work with other available aluminum spools, or is this spool unique to this design?

My favorite colors are dark purple and black mixed and matched on 1 reel.  Or green and black.

I might suggest Silver, Black, and Green or Purple for production colors.

The spool is based on the Penn Jigmaster 500/501 spec. So, it will fit any spool that has the same spec as original Penn JigMaster 500/501.

I will post some color samples later.

Cool! Isa frame for one JM width(500 or 501) only? Don't care 'bout color('cept mabey no pink!). Not a knock on your, or anyone elses engineering, but there's gotta be some prototype bugs to work out. Heck, even my minor-league repairs got bugs. If Sal's to busy, need a tester?

Width. Frame, spool and stand are narrowed down ona 501 compared to to the original standard width of a 500. Same with the high speed 505 vs. a 506.

Here is the latest on this project.

The first product run kit will be for Jigmaster 501 in sliver color. The qty is 100 pieces. Few samples are being made for testing now, and they will be shipped to here (Florida) for testing. If everything tests out fine, the production will start. A pre-order will also start. The price is $199.00 including shipping within the USA (USPS mailing service).

For pre-order, 50% payment will be required, and the remaining 50% will be due upon the order is ready to be shipped out.

I have tried to keep the cost down, and I feel that it is a good price for this Jigmaster aluminum kit (One price frame, right sideplate, SS reel foot, rod clamp, magnetic control, clicker and SS side plate screws (bridge screws are not included).

All a person will need is right side drive trans and a handle.

Please let me know if there are any questions.

Thanks,
--Alan

Question,

Will the spool shaft on the handle side have the spindle shoulder extending right to the bearing like a Newell does or will it be thinner for a longer length like a Penn spool. Just wondering if I needed a shim if I used a penn pinion gear??

Thanks.

The one piece frame tolerant is very tight, so my resource had to re-do it. Then, it will be sent to here for fit testing with the right sideplate.

I will keep you all updated on this project.

Thanks,

Finally, this one piece frame Jigmaster 500/501 is ready for fit testing. These samples will be here next week, and couple of these will be sending to Sal for checking. If everything goes well, a production will start at once.

We will make a sideplate to cater the "Magnums". I can't recall, if the magnum is using the 113H yoke and jack. Does the Jigmaster spool shaft fits in the 113H pinion gear?

Any info will be great....

I'm pretty certain magnum spool has its own spindle to engage larger pinion. this is what has always made them so rare as i understand it.

The Magnum yoke is a bit of a hybrid. The overall profile is Jigmaster but the pinion cutout is 113H. I think Bryan had some of these for sale but if you make Magnums happen we will need more of these.

The magnum shaft is the thickness of a 113h and the bearings are bigger to accommodate the bigger shaft.

They came in 500 width, 99 width and I think the Extra wide width.

It would be really nice to have a Magnum 501 width. That would be a beast of a reel.

They take the 113H bridges, gears and pinions.

This is a legendary project.

Eugene, I do not own a Magnum, could you double check on that bearing dimension? The 113H bearings are shared with the Jigmasters and a few others.

Very nice reels Alan. Love the built in mag control

I notice some talk of magnums.....The Jigmaster magnum also requires bigger gear housing that extends beyond the outer perimeter of a standard jigmaster housing. The pro Gear 541 is very similar to your Jigmaster(minus mag control), and could give you a good idea of how far that 113H gear housing sticks out, and how pro gear made it work

Sal: How was assembling those kits and how was the fit?

Joe
Hello Joe, we're ironing out a few minor things, not related to fitment.
Tolerance on this one is very tight and yet the parts snap right in to perfection.
Gear sleeve it centered perfectly, frame screws also line up perfectly.
Bridge and the 5/8 bridge screws all sit flush and with good alignment
(https://i.imgur.com/VEUYAeM.jpg)

This is a 2 piece frame, when mounting the right side plate , it almost looks as a one piece frame. that gives you an indication how these frames and plates are milled.

They also did away with the stock clicker spring, I'm guessing not enough room, having the magnet there
(https://i.imgur.com/M5ak37H.jpg)
This one is a tad quieter than the stock, but works much better.

This was with no magnets. I was testing  the alignment of the new parts and the bearings as well.
By the way those are the ABEC 7 Boca Bearings opened and a drop of oil added to them.
I tested a few, those felt the best.

Very soon. The factory is making the sides plate now. 200 sideplate should be done on Friday. Then, it will be the frame. It might take two weeks for the frame.

I would say, it might be 1.5 months.

This one is going to be HOT.

I wish there were a 99-width option, but will be quite content with the 501.

Finally, this project is a done deal. The shipment will be here in 2 weeks, I will be ready to ship out all members' order. If a member has placed an order on this item, please send me an email for an invoice for your order.

Since this project is done, a project of 113H uses the same design of this JM project, but without the magnetic strike, will start again.

Very cool I hope to be able to afford a couple of these. One of the issues I have with my 501 is if i'm am not careful lighter line sneaks between the spool and the reel body. Is there less room on your frame for that to happen?

Thanks,
Jesse

What bridge screws do these need...stock or a narrower head for the recessed screw slots?

As for room for the head screw, you will be fine, there is enough room there.
Stainless steel screws are recommended when using the custom stainless steel bridge, but you will do just fine using stock, unless you use a power drive to set them in.

Not pushing you away from using power drives, of course you can, but need to be very cautious or you will strip the screws.

I assemble my kits by hand.

I would also like to mention that the custom thicker sleeve under the star will fit nicely on these kits.

Ok. I pilfered some Jigmaster 506 parts to test mine(drag spacer, bridge screws, eccentric and e. lever). Works real good. I quickly dissembled it and put the 506 back together, so no pictures yet till I get my Mysticparts order. On the mag.: The eccentric sticks up about 0.3 mm past the outside a the plate, so a nylon or delrin washer may be needed between the lever and side plate. The clutch spring I had, hadda be shortened on both ends, cause the circular part was hittin the side of the beveled edge a the side plate, preventin full movement of the eccrentic. Easy peasy. This's gonna bea good un!

Imina shelf my Long Beach 65 Deluxe, put the line on the mag. 501 and FISH IT!

Hi Guys!

I'm jumping back into fishing again after a LOOONNGGG break due to life and saw the awesome frames Alan put together, so I snagged one of the ones with "dents" I say it like that cuz when it came it looked almost flawless!

I can't say enough how much of a master piece this is... just amazing quality from the adjustable mag to the great craftsmanship. I slammed this together with all of Alans products. This reel is all Pro Challenger handle, sleeve, gears, drag, yoke, bearings and everything is stainless steel, everything indestructible. Alan has officially created his own reel be remastering these jigmasters. This is now the "Pro-Jig". TO me these are the best star drags on the market now.

Thanks guys!

I put mine together tonight. All PC internals worked perfect on the first try. Almost like dropping everything in a bag and shake it up and out comes the reel. I'm not a magnet guy so I got one without. Great free spool right out of the gate. Haven't decided on 50 or 65 lb braid until I see how much I can get on it. Be using it with a short 30lb top shot for now, want the option to go heavier if need be, no doubt the reel is up to it. Going to the islands Tuesday to give it a work out. Hope the yellowtail are still around.
Really top self job Alan can't wait to break it in
Thanks Sheridan

Yes a PC handle and knob. There's so few penn parts in it's hard to call it a penn, more like a Pc 501.. I used a eccentric lever from a pro-gear so I didn't mar the finish. Going to put 65 pound PP on it tonight, I have a 300 yd spool,I think it will hold that ok. I'm thinking of mounting it on a super seeker 90m with a 30lb top shot.

I will come out with a new aluminum eccentric lever. I just need to come up with a good design on that. Probably, my resource will work on that after the Squidder Aluminum spool.

Paired this with a Rod Dwight made for me and now this is my go-to 30lb setup for tuna and yellow tail.

Thanks guys!

Very good looking reel. It is nice to see you back into fishing again.

Sheridan, that color looks great, one of my favorite, good job!

Jason, nice to see you back, I hope you'll stick around this time.
Blue is another combination I like with the silver frame., I asked Alan to get us some a while back, but I guess I'm not that important :-\

Took the reel out today, caught a limit of yellowtail 12-15 lbs. reel worked great, cast sardines very well. Great drag system and with the braid has a unique sound. Went 5 for 5,we were fishing tight to the structure with kelp in play and could put the screws to the fish pretty well. No sure of the offset handle, great for fighting fish but had to move it for casting   Maybe not the best option for a reel that size, I'll try a straight handle next time. All in all couldn't be happier I'm sur the reel could handle yellows twice that size with heavier top shot. A lot of compliments on the look too
A few other highlights, one guy hooked a yellow, the bait went thru it's mouth and out the gills and another yellow ate it. A twofer like I've never seen
Another guy had yellow whipped, all of a sudden the thing takes off and he's getting absolutely freight trained. We figure it's a sea lion. It drops the yellow and he gets the fish up to the surface and it's about a 250-300 lb Black Sea bass rolls on the yellow then sinks out. When the fish hits the deck there were crush marks right behind the 15lb yellow's gills. The food chain in action. Very impressive fish and good to know there's still a few monsters around
Great day, if you on the fence about these kits I can say you won't be disappointed. Going again in a few weeks, hoping the bigger grade yellows show up  it's getting that time of year
Thanks for your effort Alan

Nice Sheridan! BTH, thanks much for the bars, the 259's gettin there...

Mine. Very smooth workin. The JMX package makes this'n more drag adjustable than any Jigmaster I have so far. Not to concerened with cosmetics over function, I labeled the mag. control temporarly 'till I get used to it. Plan on doin some castin.

One thing somewhat bothersome to me: I only got about 1 turn on alla bridgeplate screws. Anyone else experience this?

Screws get measured from below the head, so no matter what screws you use if they're 5/8" you should be getting 4 turns.
I also use stainless steel bridge screws, but not because of length, I use them because the stock screws will eventually strip from going in and out that stainless steel bridge plate.
One on two things could be happening to yours,
1- the tip of the screw are shredded,
2 - the bridge is not sitting on the two plate pins on the plate all the way down.
tolerance is very tight on these, try positioning the eccentric lever in the middle as you secure the bridge plate.

Thanks Sal. I think the bridge is flush, the E. Jack is centered and all's workin good, but I'll recheck. Tried 2diffrent sets a bridge screws, so probably they's 5/8" and right. We'll see. These type a things are fun n interesting to deal with...

Measured my new screws from Mysticparts and some others I had layin around and they's #17-60ch at 0.60"(about 19/32"). One a the lower ones only gets about 1/4-1/2 turn. Was measuring from the underside of the screw-head to the tip.

5/8"=0.625"...? Don't know what's up, but Imina use some 113H bridge screws(0.70") with about 0.05" ground off to clear the spool and see, hopefully they'll end up slightly longer than the #17-60ch's n work.

Gregg, I just double checked.
Even though the socket cap screws and stock screws measure the same, the stock screw sits a little lower on the plate.
I do see the the under side of the head is machined differently on the cap screws, this makes them sit deeper.

I marked my torque screwdriver, not easy to count the revolution on those. I'm getting 2 3/4 turn on the socket screw and about 1 3/4 turn on the stock screw.
Not sure the stock screw would fail, but I see your concerns.
I do recommend stainless steel screws on these reels, here is where I get them from:

Thanks Fishin-gents. Imina have some learnin fun with this. Screws are cheap, just godda wait for delivery, as long as I don't strip out the bridge plate threads, I won't get frustrated.
Really, I think 1.5 - 4 turns is enough on the bridge plate threads, I'm gettin 3/4's on the best one. Perhaps I got a head plate that wasn't drilled deep enough, though I doubt that it's diffrent than the others.

Gonna start out with ss socket cap screws next time, or, maybe the kit outta come with them?...
Thanks so much for your help.

I checked my screws and there's 2 that are pretty short. I've fished the reel twice with no issues but don't want to press my luck. I picked up some SS socket head screws that are 3/4" that I can file down. They're threaded all the way. Is it ok to use those on the top 2 or do the threads cause a problem with the springs?  I have longer penn screws if I need them
Also what size are the screws that hold the frame together?  Might put socket heads in those too
Thanks

If the top 2 screws are threaded, the yoke will not work as it gets jammed on the threads....the non threaded part of that screw is for the yoke to slide freely up and down

Fished mine yesterday. Dispite the bull-ride-like conditions, bout every third cast with a 3oz. jig, I could tell that this JM variation is the best yet. Love the clicker, love the cast control, and it's as crankin smooth as can be. Good job Allen C. n' Sal!
Naw, no bites on the jig, though.

I am going to make some Jigmaster partial thread bridge screw in stainless steel and it is in flat head. It will be one threading more than the OEM.

It is around $.90 a piece.

Let me know if you have any suggestions.

Alan,

Thanks so much for these!!! I had the opportunity to fish my 501 on three separate trips now.
The reel is flawless in my opinion!!!! Super strong, your bridgeplate, gear sleeve and JMX500 gears and drags performed perfectly!!!
