Title: Shimano 1500LC corrosion
Post by: steelhead_killer on September 14, 2017, 11:21:44 PM
Good evening!  Got this reel in the other day.  Guys over here love the direct drive feature for trolling for salmon.  Parts are very difficult to come by anymore.  The head plate is badly corroded as you can see below.  Anyone come up with a simple way to fill the eaten way portion to help give this reel a little protection?

Thanks!

Best I could think of would be a strip of soda can as a backing and devcon/jbweld filled, filed,  shaped and finished, then cover repainted with maybe POR15?

What about marine epoxy? Hmmm just need something to hold it in place...the wheels are turning...grinding..

To me, the options are --

New sideplate, if available anywhere

Donor reel, if available

Or, if only in that one spot -- glue and clamp a piece of aluminum inside the plate casing -- cut to notch around the free spool button -- fill in the corroded places with a filler -- sand and work down to smooth -- repaint the plate -- that would be the best I could suggest -- pretty much exactly what ReelClean suggested.

Make sure you charge enough -- or just leave it as is -- that is what the customer already did anyway.

Tough & a shame...

Best,

Fred

Thanks guys!  I decided to send it back as is.  It came to me with a corroded bearing that was locked on the spool shaft.  That alone was enough time on this reel.

It's not hurting anything if the button is not sloppy from lack of support.  I think it adds character.

It has good support.  My two primary concerns were saltwater going directly into the reel and the possibility of line being caught and shredded by those jagged edges...  But he has used it this way for 15 years so I'll lube it up and lets see how many more years he can go!

Well he got three more years out of it.  Its back on the bench with the anti-reverse dog stuck.  The gap is just allowing too much saltwater into the reel.  Time to take another more aggressive approach to sealing this thing up.  More to come...

Seems like he doesn't mind ugly too much, try running a small bead of silicone seal to keep the water out. Easy to remove if it doesn't work. Takes a lot of time otherwise

something was mentioned on here a while back -- can't find...

some sort of "playdough" stuff you can shape by hand,

and it cures into hard plastic in a couple hrs.

One wrap of electrical tape should seal it up for use.

There is a product called Knead It.  Comes in a cylindrical shaped stick. It has an inner substance and an outer substance. You cut a small amount off and knead it together like dough and it dries very hard. Very handy stuff for many uses.
