Alan is there a part number for the fine thread star drag. For the left handed reel

Penn Parts only lists a righthanded star wheel 10-505. They list a lefthanded star for a coarse threaded sleeve 10-60LH. Coarse lefthanded gear sleeve (brass) 86-60LH. I don't think a lefthanded 505 or 506 was ever built by Penn, only 500 & 501.

mike, hold off on that check.  a fine thread left handed gear sleeve is useless unless there is a fine thread left handed star.  i do have some coarse threaded left handed 10-60 stars, but no coarse thread left handed gear sleeves.

I was wondering about that Alan. I can make one Alan but I would rather not. I will get my first day off since July first on friday. So I am out of steam. Just had a power failure 30 minutes ago. My first at this new job. Boilers back on line and everthing back to normal.

I am having a problem finding a left handed 13/32-32 tap. That what I need to make the star for the sleeve you sold me. It seems no one makes one. I have the right handed ones but no left.

Mike,

I'll answer your PM here to save time. I usually single point funky threads like that. Taps can be made, but they are usually cost prohibitive...
I haven't had a custom tap made in years, sorry.

That kind of hard to do with drag stars though. No way to mount it in the lathe chuck. I was planing to have them laser cut. So a tap would be better. I'm only making a few so it hard to justify. Maybe I will have to send the gear sleeve back to Alan. They should have made them course thread. I can find the star online for that thread type. Fine thread no such animal.

How about having the star lazer cut round then bore the thread, then have it lazer cut again to the shape you want for the star.    ;D       Rudy

If i have it done it goes by the sheet. I will need to make allot to keep the cost down. And make right hand ones to defer the cost. It's to expensive to do one at a time. It's just not cost effective. If you owned a laser cutter you could make money doing it because you own the machine. But they want a arm and a leg to do it for someone else.

Check with Bryan or Keta, maybe they can slip in an extra piece to cut when they are having their stuff cut.

Add a bolt hole pattern on the star. You will be able to fixture the star that way.

I will settle for a brass gear sleeve. And a stock star. It will be a whole lot cheaper. Alan forgot to say the sleeve was useless until after the fact. But he will take it back no problem. He has 5 left handed that are paper weights until stars are made. I can make stainless sleeves cheaper with the coarse thread cheaper than making the stars.

actually, just keep it.  it won't do me any good.  it's not even worth the cost of postage.   :-\

Hold on Alan I can have a tap made for $105.00 per tap. That isn't to bad that as good as it gets. I thought it would be hard to get but I can order it in Modesto. It's made in Illinois one day turn arround and shipped.

You probably already know, but as a reminder...

It needs to be a buttress thread.

actually, these are not.  the 6/0 gear sleeve is a buttress  thread for sure, but not these.  i just took a look and they are plain sawtooth.

and mike, do you really want to spend a hundred dollars just for this?  i'm not sure there is much of a market for a left handed jigmaster gear sleeve and star set.   :-\

Alan I have a lot of tooling I don't use now but when I need it I have it. It's my pre retirement collection. You never know. No one builds left handed reels. I might be profitable to explore it and sell a few reels before the other parts run out.

Mike,
I know this is an old thread, but did you still have that information
on who will make the left handed tap? $105.00 is worth it to me. I also have
tools from being a mechanic that I will only use two or three times in my
life but as you said "when I need it I have it" I sent a request for a custom tap
to a tooling company but they are very slow in following up on it. They acknowledged
my request but that's it.
Hope to hear back from you.

If you get the tap I will send you some stars to tap to help recover the cost of tooling.

Alan is right there are not enough sleeves. You can order a tap through johnston industrial supply in
modesto ca. Its also called jisco and there might be one in your area. I would pefer getting someone to make a left hand sleeve with a standard right hand fine thread . But you would need enough orders.

Thanks for the info Mike!! I'll look into the tap. When/if I get it I will make it available
to members who make stars so that we all can use those sleeves that Alan had made!!!!
Will keep everyone posted!!

Sorry it took so long! I got the tap and sent it off to Lee. Just had a conversation with Alan C. and he is interested in
making a run of Jigmaster (98-505) S.S. left handed gear sleeves with a gear set!!!! He's gonna let me know what his "Resource" says!!!

You still have a problem there are no left handed bridges anywhere. I wanted the left hand sleeve for my left handed 49L.

Mike,
I've been configuring stock bridges with custom dogs on the bridge in a drop-in style so you don't have
to grind out the sideplates. It's not very hard to do! Just time consuming so patience is a must. If you don't mind throwing the
eccentric lever forward for freespool and having the clicker towards the front, it works out pretty good. I've done two
Jigmasters with Alan's S.S. lefty sleeves and they are holding up so far!!! Food for thought!!
