Title: DAM Quick 275 Super 2-Speed HD Spinner
Post by: foakes on December 03, 2017, 06:56:43 AM
Here is a 275 Super ready to assemble --

These were made for only six years (1963-1968) -- in very small quantities -- and are possibly the most rare of the DAM Quicks.

We don't get to see one of these disassembled like this every day -- check out the materials, engineering, and over-built components.

Some of the features include a push button spring loaded 2 speed, aluminum spool, a very heavy duty double supported bail and line guide, steel shafts, pospher cut bronze gears, brass gear and crank support sleeves, and a replaceable stand instead of having to buy a new frame.

All parts have been cleaned 3 times, burnished, polished, and about 1/3 of the parts are New Old Stock out of the bins -- not because it was necessary -- just because it will likley be catching fish another 50 years from now, and needs to be as right as possible.

It is getting a set of Adam's CF & metal drag discs -- greased with Cal's, plus an under gear CF.

This belongs to Sheridan on our site.

Best,

Fred

My only fear is it will be too nice to fish!  Might have to make the trip to San Diego and try to scratch a late season blue fin
Gotta say I've never been a spinning reel guy. Looks like like going to change
Thanks again Fred

My, there sure are a lot of parts there, don't misplace any, Fred!   ;)  Here's a thought. How about you do a step by step tutorial on putting it back together, please?  :) I have an old crusty example that needs a big time go through. If you do a tutorial I won't have to scratch my hair out or slope my forehead quite so bad with the palm of my hand.  ;D

Tommy --

I have taken a few pics before and during disassembly pics of the gears and 2-speed configuration and some more now -- but even with the pics it will likely be a put together, test dry, take apart 3 or 4 times until it works -- then finally lube, oil, grease -- type deal.

270's and even 270 line counters are easy enough for me to do in my head while driving -- without schematics.

This 275 is a different animal -- and I have never been able to locate a schematic for one.  Got shop manuals for all other Quicks -- not this one.  (If anyone has a schematic, I would greatly appreciate it before reassembling in a couple of days).

There are (10) shims, washers, and springs -- plus 13 additional 2 speed parts that all must be just right.

There was so much crud and grease when disassembling -- that I couldn't tell exactly which ones went where -- but I believe it will go back together with what repair guys like you and me know about these old soldiers.

Don't think there will be time for a detailed tutorial -- just got back from Church and teaching Sunday School -- and there are 3 other reels that need to be completed to mail tomorrow.  Plus, my schedule is to complete as much of the backlog of 80+ reels before 12/18, as possible,

And since only 4 pics can be posted easily at a time on our site -- it is just time that I do not currently have.

But if you get stuck on yours, I will have pics and perhaps a little helpful hint or two.

The only part that was rusted and disintegrated was a tiny coil spring for the 2-speed push/pull rod.  Substituted a tiny Penn dog spring that may work -- if not, will improvise further.

All of the rest of the rust, crud, salt, and lubes from 55 years ago came clean after a few baths and polishing.

Best,

Fred

Believe me, I feel much more than lucky. Thanks Fred, no hurry, this must be like one of those "Zen" projects where the proper frame of mind is Important.
Funny thing, I saw a post on here about the reel about a year ago, sounded interesting, checked Ebay and there it was. Guess I just got lucky.
Seen a few pop up since.
Thanks Sheridan

I'll be watching closely!

Picked this up in the neighborhood from one of the old guys. (I'm a youngster here at 65).

Maybe, gulp ???, it's finally time to jump in and , gulp :'(, attempt a rebuild.  Why not?

If Fred can do it...  Ohh no!

Pretty smooth shifting... springs are shot.

My Wife got me a package of those fishing towels your reel is sitting on. Always just used my pants before that. I don't know what they're made of but even baracuda slime wipes off with those. Into the washer, the smell is gone and good as new, and they clip on your belt loop. Don't know what they're called but right up there with sliced bread. Think she got them at Big5 maybe. Am I right Steve? You use yours?

Everything on my crustation  :D works as it should, just really, really stiff. I didn't pay much for it, $27.00 shipped, but it looked awful greasy & grungy. It had a oily looking sheen to it so I think someone thought spraying it down with WD40 would preserve it better. I hate that stuff so when I scrubbed the outside with dish soap and water all the green areas turned really dull. I was so surprised & frustrated I just put it back in the storage bin and figured I tackle it some day when I'm in better humor.   ;)

If it were mine, Tommy --

I would just do a complete dissasemble --

Take the rotor, body, sideplate, badge, and stand down to the powder coating shop -- and just have them dip it in their tank to remove the paint down to aluminum.  Probably charge you $10 or $20.

Then take it back home and spray it with wrinkle paint such as Eastman's or Krylon in the same color green.

Then a coat of light grey on the stand and badge.

Put it back together after doing your magic cleaning of all the parts.

If you can't find the exact colors -- a good automotive paint shop, vintage radio, typewriter restoration, or hot rod outfit will match it for you in the green wrinkle paint.  Just like the old radios, and valve covers in hot rods.

The badge and stand are just a salt proof light grey -- but any matching grey will work -- doesn't have to be wrinkle -- just a flat pastel color on the badge and stand -- slightly rough.

This is the way this reel was originally painted at the factory -- so you are not changing anything except improving the looks.

The WD-40 was likely sprayed on the reel to improve the looks for selling.

When you washed it off -- the carriage turned back into a pumpkin.

But nothing restores to original 55 year old flat wrinkle paint.

Just my opinions...

Best,

Fred

Good 275 example, Steve --

Be cautious on this rebuild -- there are parts that need to come apart in a certain way, with certain tools, many parts of which are not made of Unobtanium -- they are rather constructed of makeanotherfromscratch-ium.

Simple things such as removing the pin from the crank without ruining a unreplaceable handle in aluminum, steel, and fused together over 55 years -- or getting the shift pin to release from the shift mechanism without ruining the red knob.

Or finding tiny rusted parts as you dissassemble that seem unidentifiable and dissimilar to any other reel you have ever worked on.

You may be a lot better at this this I am -- but I might consider starting with a couple of the more simple Quicks such as a 330 or 220 -- just to get the techniques more comfortable.

Of course, I am available for consult or basic parts, as needed -- or just keep a coffee can nearby to chunk all of the parts into -- and send it to me.  Or wait until our next fishing trip to drop it off.

Keep us posted on your progress -- you can do this -- just don't get frustrated -- we have your back, and there are always options.

It is just a fishing reel...not that important, really.

Best,

Fred

Very interesting reels. I saw a website where Alan Hawk reviewed these.  He said there was little demand for them so they were discontinued. Seems there is more demand now some 50-60 years later.

fred awesome to see you at on one of these. I would request some pics of the spring your talking about cause mine was none existent when I took mine apart at least I don't remember it if it was there? Might have to go back and look through my own thread. I didn't get as involved really getting all the components polished up like yours I mostly just burnished the pieces that rotating/moving on each other. Mine is working well both gears work. Fine I need to get the red knob back on you sent me, trying to remember where it's at now. I can't wait to be able to get the carbon fiber drags and metal drag disc to up grade the drag on mine and my regular super.

Well, after Fred's beautiful introduction of the 275, I had to get busy hunting one down.
Sure enough within a few hours, success! This came today and I finally just got a chance to open the box:

That is a great example wish the one I picked up was that mint. Even though considering the starting condition of mine I don't think it had an easy life, after cleaning it, and re greasing it still functions flawlessly is amazingly smooth for the size.

The only one I've seen was pretty beat up with parts missing, but the gears looked ok. He was asking $50 plus shipping I offered him $45 with free shipping.
I will take it apart and see what I could save. I know the dog is missing, if I find one I might send it out to get stripped and powder coated with some custom cut outs, or maybe it will end up in a trash bin...we'll see

Nice one Daron, Should come in handy on your next venture to the beach. I'b be interested to see the drag numbers when when you get it spooled up. The CF drags should make for a stout set up.

Sheridan, I left the drags original, I wasn't sure if Daron wanted to keep it as original as possible or if he wanted to upgrade.
He knows how to if he wants to :)
All parts on the reel are original, except for the handle. Oh, the dog post has also been replaced. The one on Daron's reel is much stronger than ours.
When I'll run into an original handle I'll send it over to him. I must say though, I like that handle that it's on now much better. :-\
