Title: cedros sportfishing - date changed to september 3-7, 2018
Post by: alantani on January 27, 2018, 05:01:36 PM
********** DATE CHANGED TO SEPTEMBER 3-7, 2018 ***********

i've know the people at cedros sportfishing for quite a while and have been wanting to go down to check it out.  it looks like a pretty nice operation.  they have three of their "12 person - 5 day" slots open in june.  it's a little early in the season, but we've fished cedros on the spirit of adventure that time of year and have done well.  this is going to be more expensive, but it definitely will be different.  if you are interested, take a look at http://www.cedrossportfishing.com/ and please read everything carefully.  not having done this before, i am a little hesitant to go down with a big group the first time out.  i may still just book a trip by myself just to see what it is like and then try to put a group together for next year, but i thought i would at least put a group trip for this year out there as an option.

take a look and let me know.  thanks!  alan

I've gone down twice with Cedros Outdoor Adventures and had a great time.  I think these guys operate the same.  Check to see what the weight and rod limits are on the plane.  The stuff they recommend for tackle is probably overkill.

Hey Guys,

This is Rosie Flowers from Cedros Sportfishing.

First... I definitely want to encourage you to check out our website, just like Alan said.  We are an All-Inclusive Sportfishing Lodge, which basically means we take care of everything, excluding alcohol & gratuity.

Second... You might ask, why Cedros Sportfishing? There are other places on Cedros Island... Well, here are a few really great points as to why we are the BEST!

1.   We are the only lodge on the island that has a direct flight, included in the cost of your trip, departing from the CBX (CrossBorderXpress) in Otay Mesa, CA.  This direct flight can save you more than 15 hours of travel time. NO van rides to and from Ensenada. NO BORDER WAITS!  On an average, our anglers depart Cedros Island around 7:30am and are back on U.S. soil by 10:30am!

2.   Since we have our own chartered aircraft, exclusively for Cedros Sportfishing, there are no extra fees for rods or luggage weight.

3.   We provide you with a Mexican Fishing License.

4.   We provide you with a Mexican Visa.

5.   Our fish processing facility is the only one on the island to produce table ready fish (no skin, no redline, no bones) and your catch will be vacuum packed and frozen at no additional charge. Other companies charge $1 or more per vacuum packed bag! This can save you $50-$100, or more! In Long Range Sportfishing, fish processing is NOT included.  This actually makes our trips more cost effective!

6.  Our lodge is on a sprawling cliffside property, which epic ocean views and plenty of space for everyone to enjoy!   Our vehicles pull right into our property, there is no walking from distant parking lots.

7.   We have a daily laundry service, which helps you limit the weight you bring....so hopefully you can bring home more fish.

If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to email or call me.

A $500 deposit is all we need!

Also, check out October and November.  Many open weeks for 12 there also...and remember, 6 is a great group too!

In October, there is the opportunity to catch Yellowfin, Doradao, Yellowtail, Black Sea Bass and more!

What is the targeted species in June?

I've never fished with anyone from this board, but I might be interested as long as you guys don't mind a newbie tagging along. I'd love to gain some knowledge from some of you here.

Is this a trip where we would bring our own gear, Cedros gear, either or?

Neither have I, that's why I've signed up to go. I'll throw this fishing trip into the "mini" bucket list category. This skybridge walk across the border to the Tijuana airport seems interesting as well. A big timesaver (and $ saver) if you're flying out of ATL or JAX. Maybe we can get between the islands and catch some of those huge "home guard" YT's like we did on the SoA in 2015. I think we caught 4 TONS of YT on that trip.
And if you've never been on one of Alan's fishing excursions, I highly recommend you try it out. Great people, great fishermen (with the notable exception of Ed the Alky), and great times.
Maybe a big ole sea lion can take us on a "nantucket sleigh ride". It's all good.
I've never been accused of having too much fun.

I'm thinking a Curado 300dsv on a Phenix psw808mh for plastics, a Lexa 400 on a Phenix psw809xhj for surface iron, a JX Raptor on a Seeker G6470h for YT yoyo, bait, trolling.

My son got this 37#'er with a Curado 300ej/psw807ml on a Cedros panga while fishing for Calico's!

white sea bass are called "ghosts" for a good reason.  you don't find them, they find you.  i  caught one casting a laser minnow on a spinner a couple of years ago.  got a grouper as well.  yellow tail will be the main target.  calicos are for fun, and they are lots of fun!!!!

I'm at the "looking at flights" stage of my trip planning for 9-13 June. I can get a redeye out of ATL on the 9th landing in SAN at 9:37 AM. OR -  I can fly in on the 8th and overnight at the Vagabond.
I talked to Rosie Flowers (yep, that's her name) and she can pick us up at the Vagabond or the airport and take us to CBX. Both are on her way to CBX.
What's everybody else doing?
I'm thinking a 9:37 arrival at SAN might be too late in the day to get to Cedros at a decent time.
I don't have a problem coming in early enough on the 8th to have dinner at Miguels and a tequila or 3 for a nightcap.
The plane is a Cessna 208 Grand Caravan. A single engine turboprop that's basically a flying pickup truck. Nice plane.

Mike the Cedros Sportfishing website has a 0800 arrival time on the 9th.  Suspect that is the time we need to arrive at CBX. Haven't decided if I'll come down the night before or not but thats the way I'm leaning.

Hey guys...

Just checking in again.  Sounds like a lot of interest here.

To answer a couple questions... June is really great for Calico Bass and Sheephead...and the yellowtail should be starting to move in.

I usually like to have the anglers meet at the CBX at 8:00am.  That way I can get you over to our concierge, Michel, (and the porters who help you with your gear and luggage) and it gives you enough time to stop at the Starbucks or to grab a goodie in the Tijuana International Airport.

Shoot me a quick email and I will send you the Booking information needed.     rosie@cedrossportfishing.com

Please remember to pack light! 3 rod 'n reel set ups is all you need. Check out our website at www.cedrossportfishing.com and check out the "GEAR" section...that should dial you in pretty well.  I travel down there with about 34 total pounds.  That way, I can bring back a fish!

If you have any questions....shoot them my way!

Cheers!

Rosy,

I live in San Felipe, BC and with the new highway from San Felipe MX5 to connect with Mx1 in "laguna Chapala" which is about to be finished this year (hopefully), Guerrero Negro will be only 6hrs away from me (currently is almost 11 hrs), so, I have plans to visit that place often since I have relatives there, so, you're saying in June YT is starting to move in, now, whats the best time to go after YT in Cedros?

our spirit of adventure charter was in mid june and the target was yellowtail at cedros, so they will be around.  i do know that it can slow down, but yellowtail are still there.  i just need to make sure that rosie understands that they will be our main target.

The water is still a bit warmer on the Pacific side as of now as far as I can see. Not that is a bad thing as that can push out the smaller YT for larger models or maybe give you guys a shot at some tuna and or dorado. The bass will be there, big fat lumpy checkerboards. Awesome fun on lighter gear up to say 25-30 lb test.

I would fully do a trip like this if I wasn't lucky enough to catch fish like this where I live (once in a while). Every few years the fishing local to me gets just as good for a way shorter time and in much more limited area with a way longer run to those grounds. When I say local I mean a 50 mile boat ride one way. That type of run will not going to happen on a panga trust me, so to have those bass and other critters so close is just a sweet deal.

Good luck and please show some pics, especially of the larger models of the calico's you release. Keep a trophy for sure, I see nothing wrong with that, but remember the largest calico bass are female, the largest egg layers and really don't taste all that great. IMO kind of a muddy or earthy taste to those. Larger checkerboards are the fish we should keep in the gene pool so they can spawn fatties just like themselves.

I think my best Calico at Cedros was 6.5#. I caught much bigger at the 'Lupe last year! I caught 26 YT from a panga in one day 4 years ago in August.
Title: Re: cedros sportfishing, june 2018- possible charter
Post by: Wally15 on February 05, 2018, 01:45:22 AM
I'm trying to figure what equipment to bring to Cedros for panga fishing in June. Haven't really done any of this type fishing before. All of my FL flats fishing stuff (3000's) is probably too lightweight, and I'll probably use some of their heavier loaner tackle if the bigger YT bite is good. But for lighter stuff like calicos, these are my options:
Spinners - Shimano Stradic 4000 and a Penn Battle 5000.
Baitcasters - Curado 300dsv, Lexa 300HS, and an Okuma Andros 5.
I only want to bring maybe 2 reels at most. I'm partial to baitcasters for plastics and topwater. Might check and see if they have some 30-40 lb rods I could borrow so I won't have to hassle with bringing rods.
I'm open to suggestions. Mark, you mentioned you were bringing a 300 Curado, so that's probably one I should include. The 7.1 Lexa might work for irons.
Mike

i'm still checking with rosie to make sure that it's not an issue that yellowtail will be out main target.  that means 40 bait and 50 jig.  maybe 30 spinner for goofing around.

Probably not, I've had days where we focused on Calicos but we never went all in. We caught YT on Calico days too! Including on plastics and Alabama rigs.

What you focus on is between the group on your boat and your Panguero. They aim to please, they're in it for the tips and will target anything you want.

I checked with Rosie and she has rods and reels that can be used so you can put your own reef on one of their rods (thats what I will do)

gentlemen, what say you?

I'm completely flexible on what dates we go. We do have the SoA 8 day starting 8 Oct., so I would prefer going the 1st half of Sep if possible. We'll probably do OK on YT's on that SoA trip, so the YT bite at Cedros isn't that big a deal for me. I want to spend more time on calicos and other species anyway. In my case, this Cedros trip is more of an exploratory trip than a "fill the freezer" trip.
But I'll let the working guys who have to schedule vacations and family obligations around their fishing make the call on when we go. I'm "all in" for either month!
We had a fantastic YT catch at Cedros in June '15, and a so-so catch in June of '16. I think Cedros was closed to LR boats in '17. What effect does no fishing pressure from the LR boats have on the YT bite? Probably not much, water temp is a much bigger factor. Duh!
So we have 6 signed up? Who's on the list besides you, me, and Fish Hog?
Mike

ok, i had a good talk with rosie.  i went ahead and sent in a check for the september 3rd through the 7th, 2018.  the water at cedros will be warmer then and yellowtail will not be a problem.  well, it's still fishing, so anything is possible, but it's much better than june.  now, before we start talking this trip up, there is one downside that has to be mentioned first.  because we are all on the same small plane, weight is an issue.  we will be limited to 35 pounds of fish on the return.  this is not a "we're gonna fill the freezer" kind of trip.  there may be a possibility that we can increase that a little, but no one will be filling the 100 quart coolers.

ok, with that out of the way, let's start going through stuff:

dates - september 3rd through the 7th, 2018.  i will be at that same flea-bitten vagabond hotel the day before, dinner at miguel's coccina, drinks (in moderation! ;D) at my room afterwards!

charter operator - http://www.cedrossportfishing.com/  go through the website and read everything.  it should answer all of your questions.  there is alot of information there!

cost - there is room for six of us at $1875 each.  yes, you read that right, it's $1875, not $2250.  figure a $300 tip and that's your total cost.  because not everybody fishes the afternoon of the first day, that afternoon's trip is $150 per panga, three guys to a boat at $50 each. alcohol is extra and i'm not sure if they mind or even if we can bring our own.

payments - rosie will be handling the money, not me.  i just sent in a check for $1875, so i am paid in full.  we have room for five more guys.  if you want to go, just post here and say "in!" and then please send a check right away.  please send the full amount to rosie directly.  she is at 5663 Balboa Ave #493, San Diego, CA 92111 and her cell # is 619-772-7570 you need to call.

there is ton's more to go through, but that's enough for now.  post here if you make it.  thanks!  alan

I'll do a half day panga on day 1. That's an extra $50 each plus 20% tip, correct?
And I understand we are supposed to tip the panga captains daily, so I should tip about $20 per full day?
In US dollars?

not sure on the tipping situation.  i would think we could take care of that all at once, though if you want to tip your panga guy a little extra on any given day, that should be fine.  i was more concerned about whether we could bring our own tequila or not.  i've grown to be quite particular in the last few years about my tequila!   ;D

July through November....

Paid in full. Had a nice chat with Rosie and she is super helpful and very nice. Loaner rods/ reels or rods not a problem. She also recommended bringing a few large rapalas for trolling as they can be deadly so I will bring a few. Will the herring jigs with the gold hooks and mackerel skin wings work for jigging bait at Cedros?

Yes, Rapalas work great!  I'm bringing a couple x-rap magnums.  Just about anything works when they want to play.  I'll bring some surface and yoyo irons. I use 8/0 EC circle hooks for the Mac's we make for bait.

I know the Vagabond and Miguel's is the normal meeting/dinner spot.  I just checked on the Vagabond Inn website and it's $159.00 for the night of 2 September and $89.00 for the night of 8 October (before the eight day on SOA).  I checked some spots further south, near CBX and the Holiday Inn Express & Suites : San Diego Otay Mesa 2296 Niels Bohr Court,  San Diego, California  92154 is also $159.00 for the night of 2 September and about 23 miles closer to CBX.  Just throwing it out there for consideration, however I'll go wherever the group decides works best for all.

Are you guys planning on doing a lot of trolling out of the pangas? I originally thought you were talking "cast and retrieve" when discussing X-rap 20 and 30's. No way is anybody doing a c&r on a 40. I've never done this type fishing before and have no idea what works. At my age flylining a cabbie is about all the exercise I want except for reeling in fish. And tequila arm curls.

Wally15: When I was talking to Rosie she mentioned that trolling rapalas can be very effective at times and she recommended to bring some down. I think its another option depending on conditions, fish species and bait situation. I like live bait fishing and jigging but I don't mind some trolling as you never know what might wack a rapala.................... its easier to drink  a beer while trolling. Always good to have options.

Charkbait is a little place, the place you mail order from is in Huntington Beach, it's not all that large either.  Check out Squidco for something special and Anglers Choice on the way back to the hotel. Both of them are packed with stuff.  The big 3 landings all have tackle stores too.

Surface irons!!!  I like the Tady's,  but any of the good ones probably work.    Plus Salas 6X and 6x juniors for the deeper stuff.    As Mark said, it is unlikely that you will be fishing deep for yellowtail.

The difference from fishing Cedros from a panga vs a long ranger, is that you will (hopefully) be doing some run and gunning chasing pods of yellowtails crashing bait on the surface.  These fish will be oriented toward feeding upward.  A sinking iron will work,  but a surface iron will often get bit better, or at least that has been the case for me.  When the surface bite is going off,  you don't stick around when the fish go down,  you just move on to the next boil.  If the boils aren't happening, you  fish the 6x irons or similar, live bait, or if it gets real slow... trolling.

I'll let the jig pros argue the merits of various models,   but make sure you have some regular and surface style.

I like 1 oz Warbaits leadheads with 7" MC Viejo plastics for Calicos, Tady 45/Salas 7x/JRI 7 surface irons, Salas 6xJr/JRI 6/Tady 4/0 yoyo jigs, various Rapala, Daiwa and LC  hardbaits. Rapala x-wrap magnums for trolling and I'll try some Nomad designs this year too. The times I've been there plastic's for Calicos and live bait for YT worked best but last time everything worked great on the YT!

I'll be on the bum or I will pick some up down there; Rosie also mentioned that will have have loaner gear for us. Of course I would replace what ever I lost. Not many surface irons or calico jigs for sale up here in BC and the shipping from the US sucks. Hooks, line and rapalas I have.

jigs won't be a problem.  i lost 25 pounds a while back, so worst case i can cram them all in my pockets and stop when i get to 170 pounds!!!!
I recently lost 25 lbs, but I'm still wayyy north of 170 lbs. I haven't weighed that since I was a freshman in high school! They may not let me bring any bags at all!

I know some of you are flying in so if anyone needs anything just let me know and I'll bring it. Surface irons, yoyo irons, trolling lures, hard baits, plastics, hooks, etc.

I saw on their website that they have sinkers so we don't need to bring them on the plane but I'll probably bring a couple of 2 oz torpedos for my sabiki rigs.

I'll bring 12 surface and 8 yoyo irons so I can share.  I'll bring a few X-Rap Magnums/DTX minnows for trolling and Daiwa SP minnows and big Lucky Crafts 190's and WaxWings for bass/YT and some flat falls and Colt Snipers, a couple of small poppers and some misc stickbaits too.  I have more of all this so I can bring more if needed. I'm also bringing a couple of 1 oz warbaits leadheads with 6 plastics and a few weedless baits with the weighted twistlock hooks. An extra spool of 40# and 50# line too.
I'll bring extra split rings and hooks too in case I lose them off the lures.  I have at Cedros in the past... those YT are mean!  It all fits in a day pack.

I'm thinking of mostly using artificials this trip so will be bringing a Lexa hd400hs-p w/40# leader on a Phenix psw809h for hard baits, a Shimano TranX 500 hg w/50# leader on a Phenix psw809xhj for surface iron and a Daiwa Saltiga 40ld2 w/50# leader on a Phenix phd760xh for yoyo, trolling and YT bait.  Plus a Seeker G6470 for Todd.

It'll depend on the weather and how the fishing is at Cedros.  Lately it's been mostly along the south part of the island between the salt port and San Augustin.  Fishing has been tough for the most part due to all the bait and red crabs.  Smaller Rapalas have been working better than the 30's.

Tidbits of Information

I have put this "Tidbits of Information" together for those questions that are frequently asked.

These snippets are in no particular order...just random thoughts that might help.

PASSPORTS ARE REQUIRED
CBX Passes are provided. If you lose your pass, you are responsible to purchase a new one. ($30 roundtrip, $16 one way)

You have the opportunity to fish San Benitos Island. It is off the north point of Cedros and takes an hour and a half to get there.  With that being said, there is a $100 fuel surcharge payable to the Panga Captain and you must leave San Benitos Island by 3pm to return to Cedros Island. (San Benitos is the "Jurassic Park" of Calico Bass.)

Cedros Sportfishing is an All-Inclusive fishing adventure.
Alcohol and Gratuity are not included.
Not all cellular phone plans are created equally! Check with your carrier to avoid roaming charges, or put your phone in "Airplane Mode".
We have bottled water available.
Use bottled water for brushing your teeth.
Use the ice cubes from the kitchen.
When drinking anything from a can, please wipe off any residual ice water from drinking area.
The small fridge by the coffee maker in the dining room has sodas, gatorades and bottled water. Please don't be shy, ask the crew for anything you need.
Richard is our translator.
If you want anything from town (beer, tequila, rum, tortillas), please let Richard know and he will be happy to drive you.
Most places on the island will accept dollars, but for purchasing items like beer, alcohol, tortillas, etc., pesos is the way to go.

I have an APP on my phone that does the conversion. It's Dollars to Pesos by Adiante Ventures.
Please tip your panga captain daily as you may have a different captain the next day. For the most part, you will have the same captain.  On the last morning after breakfast, our crew will have a gratuity jar available in the dining room.
We have a minimum of 10 crew members to serve you.
They will accept Dollars or Pesos for gratuity.
*Housekeeping will service your rooms daily.
There are towels in your room.

Your rooms have blow dryers. (You're welcome ladies! ;o) )

The outlets and electricity are the same as the U.S.

***Please note: No toilet paper in the toilets.  Please use the covered trash can in your bathroom. They will be changed daily.
No rod tubes.  Please use rod sleeves and bundle your rods together or you can wrap your rods with beach towels.
Weight limit on the aircraft is approximately 35#. (The aircraft only holds so much, we have to be able to get off the ground. And, we want you to be able to bring back fish. Remember, there is laundry service at the lodge.)
Please pack light. (You don't need to bring your 60# SKB tackle box) We fit everything for 2 of us in a small soft sided tackle box and our reels go in a duffle bag. There is a small tackle shop on the island. Richard can get a hold of them if you need anything. We also have a few items available at the lodge.

DO NOT BRING LEAD SINKERS! We have lead sinkers available for you to borrow at the lodge. (I am trying to find every way possible to keep "weight" off the plane.) There will be an assortment of 2oz, 4oz, 6oz, 8oz & 10oz lead torpedo sinkers.  "Check Out" a set.  Please remember to give them back to Richard at the end of your trip so the next group will have sinkers to use.  If you have lost any, please throw me a buck or two so I can keep a good supply available for everyone to use.

We have some tackle available from Phenix Bait Company & HookUp Baits & Cory's MC Swimbaits. If you would like to purchase any, check in with Richard.

Again, pack light. We have a daily laundry service available. Please put your laundry in the white bag provided and put it on the end of your bed.

Our cooks serve local favorites, the same dishes they serve their own families. If you are fortunate enough to share a fish with the kitchen...ask for ceviche, it is wonderful! And yes! You have to put the mayonnaise on the chips...yum! Chips are made fresh daily. Dang they're good.
The tortillas are made fresh daily on the island and are epic! Best I've ever had!
On one trip, we took over 40 packages home! Yes, seriously... Take some home!

Breakfast, Lunch, Snack and Dinner Daily.
Lunch will be packed to go on the pangas.
3 anglers per pangas and they have flat bottoms.
Bring Sabiki's for making bait.
Bring 3-4 rod and reel combinations, hooks, lures (light & heavy), plastics, weedless and regular leadheads. Please check our website under GEAR.
The crew will rinse your gear clean after returning everyday.
Fish processing is included and all fish will be frozen.
Do not bring a cooler to the island, but please have a cooler in your car at your drop off point.
There are 99 steps down to the beach. The steps are by the BBQ area.
There are mosquitoes and if you are like me, you'll want to bring insect repellant or wear long sleeves. I even have to spray my toes and feet.

Please carefully read this section in it's entirety as everything is either informative or important.

Directions to the CBX: 805 South, Merge onto the CA-905 East, Take Brittania Blvd exit, Turn right onto Brittania Blvd, Turn left onto Siempre Viva Road, Arrive at the CBX at 2745 Otay Pacific Drive.

At the CBX,
Pull up to the front of the CBX.
Put all Gear, Tackle, Duffle Bags on carts, they are free of charge. Carts are big enough that two or more anglers can share.  That will leave someone with empty hands to hold fishing rods.
Have your Airline Boarding Pass (Roundtrip) and CBX Pass (Roundtrip) ready.  YOU WILL NEED BOTH OF THESE TO GET BACK TO THE U.S. THROUGH THE CBX!  They may also ask to see your Visa, it will be in your envelope.
Next, just like the U.S., "most" items will need to go on the conveyor belt/Xray machine.
After that, head up the Elevators and across the skybridge.
On the Tijuana side of the CBX airport, Michel & Hugo will have the porters available to take your luggage. The porters will take your gear, tackle & luggage to a van that drives it directly to the airplane.
***KEEP CARRY ON ITEMS WITH YOU***
We must adhere to all travel regulations like we do in the U.S.  No water bottles, oversized shampoo bottles, etc.
If you would like to take a bottle of alcohol, securely pack it in your luggage.  Bubble wrap is your friend!
Next stop is Immigration. Have your Passport and Visas ready.  You are in Mexico for less than 7 days, you are fishing on Cedros Island and there is NO VISA FEE.
As you exit Immigration, Michel Reyes will meet you to guide you the rest of the way.
As you are going through the airport, there are a couple places to purchase snacks or meals.  If you would like to purchase something, let Michel know and she will stop with you. Please do your best to stay together.
Michel will guide you through to a private part of the airport where your luggage will go down a conveyor belt to a van that will take your gear and luggage to the aircraft. Keep your carry on with you.  You will have the opportunity, as the plane is getting loaded, to get anything you need out of your luggage, just let Michel know.
We must adhere to the same TSA checks that we do in the United States.  No water bottles, large shampoo bottles, knives, hooks, alcohol, etc.  Put all that in your luggage that goes down the conveyor belt to the aircraft.  If there is something that you need from your luggage, once you get to the aircraft, you'll have a chance to grab it, please let Michel know.

There are no restrooms on the plane! Use the restrooms in the aircraft before the plane departs!

Flight Departs: 11:00am and the flight is approximately 2 hours.

Once you land, please walk over to the Cedros Sportfishing van, there is a cooler with colds drinks, please help yourself as the aircraft is being unloaded.  Please note that there is a drug sniffling canine that will go through your luggage.  Just because medical marijuana is legal in the U.S., does not mean it is legal in Mexico.  Our crew will get your gear and luggage, load it into our trucks and van and take you to the lodge. A heavy appetizer/lunch will be provided once at the lodge.

Richard will be driving you to the lodge, only 10 minutes away... I suggest you have him stop for beer in town as it is on the way, nothing better than a cold Tecate on an island in Mexico!

Flight Home:  Your flight departs Cedros Island at approximately 7:30-8am in the morning. The crew will let you know what time breakfast will be and what time the van will be departing for the airport.

Please have your Passport, Airline Boarding Pass and CBX Pass on you when flying back from Cedros Island, you will need to show all these items as you go through the immigration/customs check.  This will help to expedite the crossing back to the U.S.. Do not put it in your checked luggage.

***EXTREMELY IMPORTANT***
On the return flight from Cedros Island:  When the flight arrives at the Tijuana International Airport, you must stay in or by the aircraft until Airport Personnel and Michel arrive at the aircraft.  The airport provides an AeroTram service that will transport you to the secure area of the airport, as if you were a commercial passenger.  This keeps you in the "TSA" section of the Tijuana International Airport and allows you to use the CBX back to the U.S.

Your luggage will be picked up by airport personnel and taken to the Luggage Claim area inside the Tijuana International Airport. Michel will ride with you in the shuttle, have the porters gather your luggage and take it to the CBX where it will be transferred back to the CBX carts. You MUST meet the Porters at the top of the escalator/elevators to bring your items back with you.  Again, please give the Porters a few bucks.

Use the least amount of carts as possible to leave some hands free to carry the fishing rods and then go through customs/immigration. Again, tell the officers that you were fishing on Cedros Island (and that you caught the jackpot fish! LOL) and then you're home free!  Guests have asked me about a SENTRI pass.  If you have one, go ahead and bring it, but customs usually isn't too crazy, the average wait is 8-10 minutes. I'll be waiting for you as you return back through to the CBX.

The entire return process, from the plane landing to returning to the CBX will take approximately 45 minutes.

When these trips were originally booked/planned, we did not have our own chartered aircraft.  Now that we do, we no longer have to pay the extra $6 charge per fishing rod or the $1.65 a pound for overweight baggage. Definitely a huge money saver!  Not only have we saved our anglers up to 15 hours in round trip travel times, but the best thing is... We now have the opportunity to fish the first day!  Since fishing was not originally in the charter package cost for the first day and some anglers don't want to fish the first day, we spoke with the panga captains to get a price for fishing the first day.  The cost is $150 per panga for a half day fishing, 3 anglers per panga...so $50 per person, NOT INCLUDING GRATUITY, if 3 anglers are on the panga.  If anyone would like to fish the first day, please let me know so I can make the arrangements.

Anglers fishing the first day are:  Everyone!

The weather is gorgeous right know...warm, a slight breeze and a little humidity, but always bring a light jacket for the early mornings on the water.  There is air-conditioning in every room, please keep your doors closed to keep that cool air in! The water is warming up, feel free to swim or hang out with the locals at the beach!

Most of all... Relax, enjoy the view, especially the sunrises, have fun fishing in a preverbal sleepy little fishing town on Isla de Cedros...the locals are warm and gracious, our crew is your family and...

Mi Casa es Su Casa!

I'm up for a SB day trip. Let's check wx and fishing conditions when we get to Cedros. We can target Calico Bass plus we caught some huge "home guard" YT's between the islands back in '15. They've probably grown a lot in 3 years  ;D
Sea lions were a real problem, however.
Wonder who that shady character is in the background of the attached pic????

I was planning on bringing one spinning reel (Penn Battle II 5000) but I just checked and CS only rents baitcaster rods. So Plan B is to bring 3 baitcasters:
Shimano Curado 300DSV - 30# (40# Fluoro topshot)
Okuma Andros 5iia 2 spd - 40# (40# Fluoro topshot)
Okuma Andros 12iia 2 spd - 50# (60# Fluoro topshot)

I'll match the Curado with one of their Okuma SCTi-C-801H rods and pair both Andros reels with their SCT-C-701H rod.
I'm not flying 3 rods from Georgia to Cedros without a rod tube.
Since I haven't done this type of inshore fishing before, especially kelp beds, do these sound like decent setups?
I'm old and somewhat out of shape, so the 2 speeds are my friend!
See you guys in about 22 days.
Mike

Just wanted to make sure it was clear to everyone, I have a double booked at the Vagabond for the night of 2 September.  If anyone is in need of a place to sleep that night, first to let me know gets it.

Mike,

Think your choice of reels will do the trick!

You wouldn't happen to have an extra 30-40# spinning rod you could bring along and loan me, do you? Maybe a 7'er. That way I could bring my Penn Battle 5K.
CS apparently doesn't have spinning rods as loaners. I could let you use the Andros 5 that was a gift from your dad.

I'm heading out to Chicago this AM for a reunion of the 101st Airborne guys I served in VN with. So I'll be out of touch until Monday. Bunch of 70 year olds acting like a bunch of 20 year olds. Chicago ought to bring back some not-so-fond memories of VN firefights.  ;D

I'm planning on bringing:

Slammer 760L spinning reel on a cheap, tough 7' Ugly Stik rod - 50lb braid with 30lb mono
501 Jigmaster with double dogs and steel innards with Bryan's 5-stack on a 8' Okuma PCH casting rod - 65lb braid with 40lb mono
Baja Special with double dogs on a 7' Penn rod - 90lb braid and 50lb mono

Do you think is will cover it? I could go smaller on the spinning reel (5500ss) for a little more sport with the calico's, but they say that we'll be fighting the kelp and 30lb mono is a little much for the lighter reel. And the Jigmaster won't be a great casting reel, but it's light and I hope that the mods make it appropriate for 40lb mono.

I plan on bringing a Shimano Bait Runner 12000D with 50lb braid with 30lb mono top shot on a Phenix PSW-760M; Diawa Lexa 400XS with 50lb braid on a Jaws 8' rod; Okuma Andros 12SII with 60lb braid on a UC 76 Predator.  Considering bringing my Avet SX Raptor with 40lb braid as well.  Counting the days ;D

Questions:
I have fished SD/Northern Baja from really small boats quite a bit. My preferred rod length is as long as possible and I've never felt hampered by a long rod in a small oat. The more I read about Panga fishing, the more it seems that short rods are preferred, should I only bring 6 footers for the boat?

Second, it seems there is some dock fishing to be done. Does anybody have any experience down there as to rigs, bait etc. Sitting on a dock watching a rod while drinking a beer is about as relaxing as it gets.

I don't have a problem with 8'ers on the Pangas. Shortest rod I've used there was a 6'6" 6465h.

Thanks for the offer, Fish Hog, but I need to start using my reels. I keep flying to the west coast and using boat rods and/or loaners. My reels are becoming expensive paperweights. I'll confine myself to just using some of your tackle  :)

Anybody want/need a NIB soft sided cooler to bring back fish? I purchased two of these a year ago but haven't used one of them. I use mine as a suitcase going out and a cooler for fish coming back. It has kept fish frozen for up to 12 hours flying back from the west coast. It only weighs 3 lbs empty. I've carried 45 lbs of frozen fish back from PVR and SAN with room to spare with no problems. No wheels, so you have to CARRY it. Should work great for the charter flight to/from Cedros.
Here's the link:
https://www.amazon.com/NorChill-Soft-Sided-Cold-Cooler/dp/B00LAH5J94/ref=sr_1_1_sspa?ie=UTF8&qid=1535028178&sr=8-1-spons&keywords=norchill+48&psc=1
I paid $72 each (on sale) and I'll let it go for $60 and a cold Tecate or shot of Don Julio. And I'll even bring it to SD.
Mike

I assumed they meant hard sided dedicated fish coolers stayed in the US. I was planning on this being my "suitcase" with my 35# weight limit going out. And I wouldn't need to use their returnable cooler coming back. I guess I'll wait for Rosie to chime in with her recommendation. If no, I'll just have to leave it in someone's vehicle at CBX. My car will still be in Atlanta.  :)

One of Rosie's bullet points...

*   Your fish will fly back with you in cooler bags.  After you transfer your fish to your cooler, I will need to get the cooler bags from you as they are our rotating stock.

Some notes on what worked for me.

I was using Eagle Claw 8/0 circle hooks and our Panguero, Arturo, was saying it was huge. I had no problem hooking fish on them and gave one, or two, or three, to farmer Ron who ended up losing them. Arturo offered him one of mine or an even bigger one from his stash. Ron took the bigger one and caught fish. There is absolutely no downside to going with big hooks when fishing Mac's for YT! Everyone I fished with ended up using 7/0 J hooks or large circles and locked in solid to YT. Some fishing smaller hooks had them pull out. I even caught 2 pelicans with the circle hooks solidly in the corner of the jaw! I used 50# mono leaders for bait and surface iron, zero reason to use less than that and I've never found that YT care about fluoro. For tuna use a fluoro leader but we weren't fishing for tuna!

At Cedros wear long sleeves, buffs, sunscreen anything not covered and use bigger hooks than you think you should... FTW!

Tim, I'd wait to see the final product since you weren't part of the conversation (you'll still want the shirt, trust me! )

As far as the farmer comment, let's look at catch numbers before we start throwing stones. I do appreciate the hooks  and jigs though.

BTW, although a good coat of sunscreen is a good idea, don't apply it like Ron or you'll scare the children!

It was really great fishing with the recently retired Chief Ron for a couple of days. Uh Ron, didn't I get one more YT than you? Four of mine were on the surface iron plus a boat load of Bonito and a surprise yellowfin croaker. I gotta admit that you are the croaker commander! Man, I've never seen anyone catch croakers like you... your brother will be jealous! We should've taken pictures of your haul. I think I must be the Pelican commander since I got 2 and didn't hear of anyone else getting picked off. They call people who hang out at the landings and steal fish from your pile if your back is turned Pelicans! I think you can tell why that is.

I'm glad you were able to get fish on both your magic Minnow and on the Tady 45 on both my iron rigs. Maybe I'll bring a 9'er next year and you can try out a "real" jig stick. You can't beat fish on the surface iron unless it's fish on poppers. There were certainly YT out there that last afternoon but the Bonito were faster/more aggressive than the YT. Oh well, there's always next month on the SoA for you or in a couple of weeks on the Excel for me.

Wow what a fun trip ! Those YT can can kick your a## and get you in the rocks in a hurry until you gey some tips from the Boss (never lost one after). The higlights for me were : my 30.2 lb YT. Pete's 25 lb grouper with a double  header YT for me, a triple YT, a dorado (thanks Mike) a nice 5lb Calico, some pinto bass, giving Craig a nick name, fishing with the Mook and the Boss, bs'ing with the boys, great cigars and better shots but most of all .................... just sitting quietly and listening !!!  ;D

I have to give a huge thanks to Rosie: she drove Ron and I to 5 star to keep our fish frozen while waiting for our planes , she spread mine out in the blast freezer, took us for a beer, piced up the fish and then drove me to the airport ........ service above and beyond !!!

You left out the best part, Todd. Alan and I drove to 5 Star to hand deliver Ron's rod tube that was left in Alan's vehicle. All 5 of us (Rosie, Ron, Alan, Todd, Mike) went a few blocks down the street to eat lunch at an In-N-Out burger place. My 1st meal from an In-N-Out. Place was packed with about 20 people ahead of us in line. I was almost late for my flight. But the food was very good. Too bad they are only a west coast chain.

Pretty much all the tackle stores out here carry them.

FWIW, I caught at least one YT while slowly retrieving my bait.  I think others did too.  It's one advantage to nose hooking your bait.

A few pics. The big YT was 30.3 lbs the two were both high 20's, one with Pete and I and our catch including his nice grouper and one with the Boss, Mook and I.

This was my first trip fishing with the AlanTani.com guys and I had a great time, both with fishing and extracurricular activities. The fishing was overall very good, the boats and captains worked out well enough for us, the accommodations were comfortable, and the service and food were great. Logistics of getting to and from the island were very smooth, although short-legged fishermen were more comfortable in the plane than the taller crowd. Here's a short description of the trip for those considering going next year.

Day 1: We met outside the CBX terminal of the Tijuana airport (on the US side) at 8am with our gear on the sidewalk. Rosie Flowers met us promptly, got us organized with baggage carts, and gave us a briefing on how the border crossing and airport experience would go. She gave us our papers (CBX ticket, visas, fishing licenses) and sent us off to use the bathroom, ATM, and pesos exchange booth before crossing the border. She then sent us over the border with a couple of helpful escorts, and immigration, customs, and baggage handling all went smoothly. Our flight took off at 10:40 or so, and we landed at Cedros two hours later. The plane was a Cessna Grand Caravan that just barely fit all of us and our gear (using a shoehorn). At Cedros we were met at the airstrip with cold drinks and whisked off to the resort after the customs dog quickly sniffed all our bags and gear.

At the resort we quickly distributed our bags to our pre-assigned rooms and hustled to get our fishing gear ready for the first 1/2-day of fishing. Our gear was organized by panga number (again pre-assigned) and sent in a truck down to the water to be loaded into the pangas for us. We were then driven the 3 minutes down to the harbor where we hopped into our pangas at 2pm. As it was pretty late, we didn't try to make bait. This day we relied on trolling rapalas and throwing surface iron. I think each of the 3 boats stayed out until 6pm and caught one yellowtail and quite a few bonita, barracuda, and other assorted smaller fish. We were served a fine dinner shortly after arriving back at the resort, and driven down into town to stock up on beer and liquor for the next few days. Drinking and general mayhem was pursued for a couple of hours until everyone drifted off to their rooms around 9-10pm. Overall it was a successful day, but without bait the fishing was only mediocre.

Days 2, 3, 4: After starting with a quick breakfast, we and our gear were shuttled down to the pangas at 6am. We boarded our assigned pangas and headed out to make bait. Their typical load is 3 anglers per panga, but Alan is negotiating for 2 per panga next year which will result in more comfort and fewer tangles. More often than not, bait required patience and moving around quite a bit. The panga captains strongly prefer large mackerels as bait, so they want to move around until we can find enough of them. We would keep smaller mackerel and large sardines if we had to but they were not the most desirable. With a full (enough) bait tank, we headed out to the fishing grounds. The winds were out of the NW while we were there so the S and E sides of the island were most suitable for fishing, especially on Day 4 when the winds came up. We all primarily wanted to target yellowtail, and so the captains had us slow-trolling/fly-lining live bait most of the time around a number of local structures. Typically one angler would stand up periodically and throw surface iron for a while also. They suggested using 40lb leader with 4/0 hooks for the bait set-ups, but I think we all agreed that larger hooks (7/0 and up) and heavier leader (50 lb) made for better success in landing the 25 lb average yellows. I think we landed 3-4 YT per day per angler, on average, but we we all had better and worse days. I think we all spent some time throwing plastics for calico bass, dropping to the bottom with bait/iron, and throwing small lures for abundant bonita, also. The fishing day typically ended at 4pm. Excellent group dinners at the resort followed at 6pm, and the BS/beer/tequila session lasted until 9-10.

Day 5: Get your bags and fishing gear out to be taken to the airport by 5:30am. Breakfast at 6am. Hop in the van to the airfield at 6:30. Flight (same plane) leaves around 8am. Reverse the trek through the Tijuana airport and CBX Terminal, and you're back on the sidewalk in the US at about 10:30am. It only takes 5 minutes to retrieve your car, another 15 minutes to divide up the frozen fish and pack the car, 5 minutes to say good-byes, and you're off toward home.

Yeah, after the dicey first half day, that was a heckuva way to get the real fishing started! A real blast!

Yeah, we rocked on Tuesday with Martin!
Tuesday was my worst day by far. We only boated 2 YT's all day long. On maybe 4 hookups. LaLo was the guide. Stayed out until 5. Very uncomfortable boat. Our bait that day was small macs. His boat did very well the next two days. That's fishing.

Anybody monitoring the Cedros Sportfishing FB page? They're catching big Dorado and WAHOO this week.
Mike
