Title: ebay bidding question
Post by: Swami805 on April 17, 2018, 02:55:04 AM
On some items when you look at bid history there's some that say "private listing-bidders identity protected". To me it means "no way Jose you're not outbidding this guy" Anyone know what the deal is with that? Doesn't seem to matter what you bid, the bid will be higher from the private listing.

They don`t scare me , I`ll put my comfortable bid in .

A few years ago, you could see the full name of who out bid you.
The identity now is already protected and you can't see all the bidders full names.
I think it is just a practice gone by. It means nothing to me.

Some people me included use a proxy bidding service. There's a few of them around you pay a small fee and they set up an auto bid for you.  You just plug in your max price you're willing to pay and the proxy bids for you until the bid surpasses your maximum.  If it doesn't pass your maximum you win for the lowest qualifying bid that exceeds other bidders.  I can't tell you how many times I pulled my hair out losing by a dollar.  Then I figured out what was going on.  It's legit, it's fair and it's smart.  Check it out you will like it.

When I list an item on eBay I can opt to keep bidders private. It's simply for the protection of the privacy of any bidders.

I never let any bidder scare me away from bidding..... I like to think I'm the guy that scares others off, but in reality I get stomped on a lot on eBay.,... I don't take it personally, I just patiently wait for another to come along

Sheridan, as Ted said, when you see every bidder listed as "private" on an auction item, that means that the seller has exercised the option to conceal any information about the bidder.  It doesn't have anything to do with the bidder.

Thanks guys, was wondering if there was a top end of how far those bids would go up. Does seen like a good idea.

Ebay does this for you.
Yeah, but not in the last few seconds unless you're sitting at the computer at the end of the auction....

Yes it will automatically up my bid in the last few seconds to whatever my max bid is. If someone's sniping program throws a hail mary over the top bid that exceeds my max bid at the end, i dont care. But the bidding software does not know where my high end is.  The only real problem with is people will bid 10+ times in a row, running up the price to try and get to my high bid.
My ebay max bid placed three days before the auction will always trump your bidding program last second bid as long as your bid doesn't exceed my Ebay bid. Obviously if your bid is higher than the max I was willing to go, you will win.

:)     It`s a game .   Just because you got beat by a dollar does`t mean that you lost by a dollar , your max cap might be 30.00 the other guy might have been max cap at 50.00  .       You lost by the next increment .       Than theirs shipping  fee you have to look at ,   For me any thing from the north west is 15-20 to ship verse 6-7 in Fl
That`s 6-10 less i am willing  to put on the reel it self , because i still have to look at  the to the door price .        Patience , patience you just have to wait your turn ....joe

If there's something I really want but don't want to overpay, or even pay the going price, I make sure I'm at the computer and try to snipe the snipe with 2 seconds left. It's worked a lot of times, but I've also had a couple of times where too much traffic hasn't allowed my bid through. No big deal, though, another similar item will eventually show up. The only thing that really bugs me is when I try to get too cute, get locked out and the item went cheap.  >:( Those are the times I kick myself for not bidding earlier.  ;D

I just bid one time with the maximum I'm willing to pay.  Sometimes I'm glad to win and sometimes glad to loose.

sometimes listing dudes will have their family and friends bid it up.
I think ebay allow you to see if this person has bid on the seller's items before, so careful in going into a bidding war

I had that happen to me once last week, I tried bidding with 11 seconds left and my bid didn't go through.  If it had, I would've won.   ::)  Made up for that, however, got a much better deal about 3 days later on a similar reel.

I have had the same thing happen twice ,locked out , only to find out there was no other bids going on ,so the seller lost money . ???

What's even worse is forgetting to log into eBay with 11 or 12 seconds left during "crunch time."  :-[

The last 20secomds things get weird.  I used to sit on my computer heart pounding ready to place a higher bid.  It always led me into wanting to join the bidding war and tempting to raise my bid.  Sometimes I won sometimes I lost and I wasn't always happy either way.  Now I use a proxy and if I really really want it I simply up my ceiling bid to the max I'm willing to go and then come back after it's over and see if I win.  It's done wonders for my blood pressure.

Sometimes I start a biding war. Then stop when the item is higher than its worth. Pull the plug and run they can have it. Sellers bid on their stuff all the time. Their greed get the best of them.

If there's something I'm really after I set my phone alarm to few few minutes before it ends and bid in the last few seconds. I check the previous bids to see how much the other bidders use ebay and see that private listing thing. I've run those up pretty good just to see if I could top them. Likely cost a few of you some $. It's always a crap shoot what the item is really like, sometimes it's a score, sometimes a dud, just gotta hope ot evens out a some point.

Out of 600+ transactions I've only paid top dollar on five or six NIB reels & that was just to finish off a set. I seldom pay more than about 30% of estimated collector values, mainly because I'm confident that I could easily get my money back. Once I got over 200 reels I now just set back and wait for good deals. That's when I'm the happiest, when I snatch a steal. I'm jumping for joy when I pick up a $50, $60 or $100 reel, if I don't already have it, for less than $20.  ;D

The ebay Police will catch them if they do that.
I don't use a proxy bidder.
If I want something, I wait and get it.
Ebay is only a game if it plays you.
Slow and steady wins the race. ;)

Doesn't it show how many times the a bidder has bid on seller's stuff in the past on ebay? or it that only in gunbuyer?

Anyway, I am a buy it now fan.

A tactic I have used to some degree of success if the seller has the buy it now feature. Place a bid to the max you want to pay for it, sometime to 50 cents less than the buy it now. See where it goes, sometimes you score really well, and sometimes you are playing close to what the seller wanted.

Interesting. It all seemed simple when I first checked out E-bay: highest bidder wins...great idea to include bidding as a way find out what people will actually pay, sos you can get a bigger profit. Simple's probably not enough fun, though.
E-bay's chump-change, compared to what can happen to people in the big finance realm, where they actually don't seem to wanna know alota detail. To many of them want it simple and profitable, sos you end up with those Madoff- like Ponzzie scheme rip-offs.

A guy I knew with a gambling problem, lost big time in the end, with the competitive poker thing. Had debt problems for years. I think the experienced con artists running that casino/tournament system, saw him comming and worked him---a young quick, intelligent man, with a typical big ego, smarter than others around him, but not enough experience in life. He loved showing-off for friends during tournaments with a comped room at Caesar's, etc., etc. I think he lost site of the big picture, as he was so good at dominating all the complicated details of the game. He described to me in detail what it felt like to start losing and no matter what, unable to get the win streak back. The House always wins in the long run.

I stopped buying stuff on bids about 15 years back, ebay bids are scams in my books, my ebay account dates from the year they came online. I just use the buy it now feature and wait for coupons to buy stuff.

Even if an item is an auction, I message the seller with an offer.

I have mailed the sender and made an offer and had them take it and take down the ad.  Kind of like a buy it now.
