Title: Another Custom knob
Post by: 54bullseye on July 12, 2018, 01:07:37 AM
Now first off I absolutely love Sal's knobs in fact I want one so this isn't competition this is just one I thought up and I drew up on a piece of paper and a 70 something year old friend of mine made it in his at home machine shop. I wish I had found a more colorful piece of Delrin rod but this is what I found. He made the blade part of the handle out of a high strength aluminum also the body of the knob. The stud for the knob and tube it goes through are stainless steel and it has lefty threads. Very rugged handle !!! The grip or knob is about 4 1/8" long and 1 1/4" across. The blade is about 5"overall length so 1/2" longer than stock Penn. He did a great job in my mind I was thrilled when I saw it !! If you notice the blade is thicker than original Penn so he counter sunk where the Penn nut tightens into sleeve and he made me a perfect little socket to fit the Penn nut !!! He is one talented old guy and he loves what he does !!!! Hope you like it !        John Taylor      Tap on pics to blow them up.

That is off the Chain JT.
Very Nice work there.
I picked up on that handle right away, when I saw it in the 20/0 thread,
Very Unique.

I love it!
That knob means buisness and fits the reel to a T.  Your friend is obviously quite talented.

Really nice John.  Do you know what kind of machine is used to make that aluminum checkering?  Can't imagine it.

Great work, another twist on the classic design very nicely machined - the socket to fit into the handle recess is pretty cool as well.

Thanks to all for the compliments ! You know how when you open up a box with a reel in it from ebay and you either go damm it I knew it didn't look quite right or you go into a big smile and in you head you say yes yes !!!  Well yes yes was in my head when I picked up the handle from Rollie my machinist !!  He doesn't fish and even he was excited when he showed it to me.

Steve :  He does the knurling on his lathe with a neat little tool/bit with two rollers on it that he just runs in a few thousands at a time and I think he said it was about 15 thousands deep. When he finishes the knurling the lines run out on the edges some and it looks a little sloppy so he cuts a small "wedding band" I will call it or radius on either side which really cleans it up and makes it pop ! He is amazing to watch.

And Ted and Mike the little Penn socket was a surprise he made that so not to scratch up the handle blade while tightening up the Penn bolt. A nice touch.    Thanks !!    John Taylor

The pictures are great but to really see the quality you have to hold it. Simply incredible! I'm hoping I do not have to wait too long to see one of Sal's handles.

Beautiful work ..      The end caps can be screwed off to gt to the delrin ?

The Delrin end caps were pressure fit / pressed in before the ends were shaped. He drilled 3/4" holes in Aluminum and left Delrin 2 thousands oversized and pressed them in.    John Taylor    PS I wish I had a piece of the Red stuff Sal used on one of his knobs.

That's some very nice work that gentlemen does John and I can really appreciate that. The knurling is perfect!

If Sal doesn't have any, I may have some short pieces of acrylic, probably and inch long, possibly and inch and a half.  Not sure as to colors.

I know I have 2 pcs of fire tiger, black and gold. What are you looking for? I keep all short ends as they always get used for one thing or another. I do a lot of inlays.

By the way, its the icing on the cake for that beautiful reel. I'm located in Wallingford.

Have a great evening,  ..  Lou

Hi Lou
I might be interested in some of you Acrylic pieces but not sure if 1.5" is quite long enough. How big is the rod ? I would need 1" minimum. Let me know. Can you send me a few pics ?   I live by Sturbridge, Mass.  Thanks Lou !!   John

John, the fire tiger is the top pic. I have 2 pieces 1.130 dia and 1.180 dia about 1 3/4 long.

The second pic is the red. I have 2 pcs 1.030 dia and 1.050 dia about 2 1/8 long.

The colors may vary a bit but if these work for you, they're yours N/C.

Let me know and have a great evening,  ..  Lou

Impressive work!
Enjoy her on that beast you've created,

Lou
Your red acrylic material is gorgeous !!!!!  My friend Rollie is making me another knob and handle for my 20/0. It's not finished yet but so far it is really looking good !!!! Rollie said he loves your material and that it nice to work with. He also made me a new rod clamp for the 20/0 that fits the old style Lakeland reel seat I have with an aluminum butt perfectly !!! We might trim it down a little bit or possibly mill in a hole for a safety line to clip into not sure yet but both pieces are shaping up. Lou Thanks again for the acrylic I love !!!!!

Looks great John!

Its like having a jewel on the end of the knob.

Pretty good stuff to work with as long as the tooling is sharp and you don't generate a lot of heat. I'm working on some new colors that are a knockout and still working on the Starburst pattern.
Although I'm able to produce the desired results with the starburst on occasion,  ....   I'm not able to do so with any consistency. Most others have given up on it but I'm still trying.

I think to get it perfect all the time, it would have to be done in Lab conditions.

Tell Rollie his work is outstanding!!!!

Have a great day,  ..  Lou

Hey John, when are you gonna let Rollie know there's more fisherman in the sea waiting for his work?
He does some fine work to say the least.
Lou, I don't believe you know the words, "Give up." I believe if anyone can come close to perfect it's you!
Thanks for showing what can be done

Thanks for the praise guys !!! I have told Rollie that I could keep him busy making handles / Socket wrenches for Penn nuts and other parts for this this board full time but he is mid seventies and pretty well off and busier than he wants to be now !! He really likes creating new stuff like the handles and when I brought him Lou's Acrylic his eyes lit up !! Lol !!! He has also made me some impossible to find ferrules and nuts for vintage rods that came out great.  Again thanks for looking !!        John Taylor

PS I will post pics of the finish product when done !!

John, if your at these again, check in with me and see what I have in my box. In addition to saving every scrap, I also buy short ends from my supplier whenever he has them.

The only problem is they're not much larger then the ones I sent you. I use them for inlays so nothing gets wasted.

Again, I'm loving Rollies work and amazed by the collection you have amassed!!          Lou

I gotta say that red and black really pops, but I like the original better, it has an old school industrial look to it and I like that.  Either way it's an amazing handle knob.  Rollie has some serious skills.  I'd bet hanging out with him would be a lot of fun.

His shop is a really nice one room addition to the back of his 2 car garage. It is big though maybe 40' X 35' but it is packed with machines !!! The whole back wall is windows and work bench over looking a big hay field maybe 25 acres. He has plants in most windows so it is a beautiful work area !! Every where you look there is cool stuff he has made and every time I go there it's 2 hours plus of shooting the S--T !!!  Never had a short visit yet Lol !!!!!! He is a cool and very talented guy.  And David I also like the first knob for it's industrial, rugged look but the red sure looks neat as well.       John Taylor

I think it is only a matter of time before John has Rollie making guides for him. You really can't fully appreciate Rollies work unless you can pick it up and look at it close. Flawless! I do like the red though.
