Title: CA. Tomatoes
Post by: Alto Mare on August 10, 2018, 02:03:27 AM
Wayne, I wanted to post a pic of these gorgeous tomatoes from your neck of the woods.
They're still green, they got a late start, but coming along nicely.
The reason I wanted to show a pic or two is that I might lose them all this year. I have been planting tomatoes there for over 20 years and it took a California Tomato to attract Squirrels ;D. I caught one walking away with a nice one in his mouth ::).
I'm sure he'll be back.

Bricks are 8" x 2 1/2", just to give an idea on size

Thanks again Wayne for the seeds, I hope I get to taste a few.

Sal: A 22cal. pill will take care of that! ;D ;). I lost an entire crop of Tomato's one year to the deer, I was fuming. so I put up an electric fence, that took care of them eating my tomato plants. My son and grandson hunts my property also. That's a win win for me, venison and critter control. ;) :D

This is how I try to keep my critters under control. A 22 Diana pellet gun. We tried Gardens here in Phoenix, lost cause.

Before she got too old, Lucy would keep my squirrel population under control.  With a little pellet gun help of course.

Sal,

WOW!!!!  You've got it going back east!!!

You have made those tomato seeds take hold back east as well.   Good for you.

Question, I send you two packets of seeds:  Package A & Package B.

Which one did you plant & photograph???

I'll send your post to my construction buddy, I know he will enjoy reading of your success,

As far as the squirrels, here in San Mateo, we call them... "Furry Tailed Rats" for all the right reasons.

Buddy Jim has an aging German shorthair as his hunting dog, and on its own, the dog killed 13 rats (the regular variety) one evening last summer.   I like the idea of a .22 with bird shot. Effective and NO ONE gets hurt.

Send more of your tomato harvest as they continue to produce!!!

We are in Bishop, CA (Google it) and will be fishing the So. Fk of Bishop Creek around the 8,000' & 9,000' elevations.

And tomorrow, Jennifer and I will drive to the White Mountains, home of the oldest growing specimen in the world.

Wayne, can't tell you which are A or B because I got mixed up and lost track.
One think I do know for sure, these are the best tomatoes I ever had.
I wanted to try one raw, with just some olive oil and a little salt to get the full flavor

very little seeds, just a few around the edge. These are really meaty and very  flavorful
(https://i.imgur.com/eKWfVQH.jpg)
Can't wait to try them chopped up and fried in some olive oil with a little garlic and toss some perciatelli al dente. :)
Thanks again Wayne.

Those look really good. Are they heirloom tomatoes, Sal?

Some of those can be so sweet, its like eating fruit. Nothing beats a good, fresh picked tomato!

Yes, I believe so Lou. Those were started from seeds and transplanted when only 2" in height. They say not to at that height, but I never had issues. Plants are now kept at 6' and yes the squirrels are still enjoying them ::).

That must be a good sunny spot, and protected from wind. Usually High Breads are sustainable when they are protected from air born fungus which they are rather prone to. Good crop Sal.

Yes Joe it's the perfect spot. Those get a full 12 hour of sun light during summer and the bricks radiate lots of heat in the evening.

You know your stuff Sal. Ruth and I were small time hobby farmers for about 12 years. We grew most vegetables that we could plant in 3/4 Acres. We caned 20-30 cases a season, no more though it just got to be to much for us.

My personal crop didn't do that well this year.
However, I work with some farmers that keep me well supplied.
I eat at leat 10 a week. ;)
BLT's, on Bologna, With cottage cheese or just plain. I love them.

Post by: Alto Mare on August 20, 2018, 10:22:35 AM
Thanks guys.
Matt, I've been growing tomatoes for a long time and have never seen a tomato plant as the one you're showing.

I think I see 60 tomatoes on one plant, this is crazy. I had cherry tomatoes do the same, but never full size as you're showing.
Very nice variety.

When my Mom was still with us, around this time of year the front porch would be packed with bushels of Roma tomato from Jersey, well over 100 at times.
We never paid a penny, Maybe they knew they would get good meals, she used to cook for the entire neighbourhood.

Even the butcher used to leave the store and hand deliver her meat. I remember him asking her if it looked good and was afraid while doing so :).
She was 4' tall, but very powerful, me and my 4 brothers kept a straight line. :)

Minicuccio, I'm not sure what's going on weather wise in your neck of the woods, but mine do the same when we get temperatures above normal. It is a natural reaction for the plant while trying to survive.

Sal: as you probably already know the leaves that are on the ground can be pruned back about a good 6" off the ground. That will help. Also we pruned off the suckers as the tomato's grow. I'm not trying to be a know it all, just my learning from my Father.

Not at all Joe, it is good to give information. I personally already know about keeping leaves away from the dirt and pruning back suckers, but there might be some that don't.

I got some dough from trader's Joe, they have one of the best dough for pizza. If I'm not too tired tomorrow I will be making some Margherita with these nice tomatoes, I already have some nice fresh mozzarella.

Thanks for the interest, these little reds are very tasty, for a month I've been getting a dozen a day.🌞
For my climate the big slicers need more heat. Butt, these little ones fill the salad plate every day.

Gary, spread the seed out on a paper towel and let it dry for a few days.  Then pick the seeds off the mass of dried goop on the towel and store in them in an air-tight container in the frig 'til spring.

I read somewhere that one may not use the seeds from the fruit because the original seeds were hybridized and the seeds inside the fruit are sterile.  Sort of like a mule.  Dominick

Thanks for sharing everyone, it's nice to see others.

Sal!

Spoke with my buddy Jim, who provided the seeds to you, and he is a NO GO for summer tomatoes this year.   Business is good & he has 6 construction projects currently working.

Let's shoot for next year for another crop of monster reds!

In Morro Bay for our trip tomorrow.   I'll post when I arrive back home on Saturday.

Your friend Jim is lucky Wayne, I wouldn't be allowed to pull out. I do one project at a time, but most of my customers use me multiple times throughout for different projects. Jim might have many guys, I only have one helper, but the work gets done ;D
As for construction, it has been crazy here as well, I didn't stop yet. on weekend I work on reels to relax :)

Good luck on your trip, Wayne.

Our rats are starting to get pissed because melon fly larvae ruin the fruit before it's ready for them to eat.
