Title: my new Sharky project reel penn 116L 12/0
Post by: steelfish on January 16, 2019, 09:25:50 PM
well, got this reel as trade for some rods repairs with a local guy.
is one of those trades where both parties where happy with the trade, I wanted a big reel like this eventho the reel needs some TLC and money, the handle side plate is broken and it has lots of corrossion on the frame posts but many of the rest of metal parts might just need a good clean job to look better and my friend is 2x more happy cuz he didnt wanted to put any money to repair the reel since many years and now will have some rods repaired for some "trash".

well as you can see the reel needs a deep clean job, surely a new drag stack, new handle arm and knob and of course another handle sideplate, so it looks like a nice project to get those parts one per time when I found them at a good price, no rush at all, it will be like restoring an old nonworking ford impala 66 found forgotten in the backyard.

Wow, that reel belongs in a museum, compadre. I wish that reel could talk, I wonder how big of a fish was able to  blow that bearing right out of the plate.
I'm sure you will get it in top shape...can't wait to see the transformation.

Looks like a great project!
Also looking forward to seeing the transformation.
I've got a spare left side-plate, but no righties.
I think Mystic has them for about $40.
Good luck, Justin

Compadre, pretty sure I have some handle and brace kit bits to help you out. I will check when I can get to the shop. I replaced my 12/0 handles so I'm certain I  have stock ones somewhere, just have to find them.

thanks for the offer bud, let me open the reel up and hope for the best and it only needs a new drag stack (not that I will buy it right away  ::), read somewhere that it should have some asbestos washers like the really old 114h reels I have seen) and the rest of the internal parts are in good shape, same with the rings
I'll let you know.

Nice find Alex, good project, should look good with a bit of TLC, I would say to much pressure on the spool, possibly blue the face plate apart, good luck, looking forward to the restored photos, cheers Don.

LOL now that was funny, I really dont know if I will be using this reel before 5 months, so Daron takes the lead  ;)
I will try to have it built and ready to go before that, but the hard part will be to find the time to fishing focusing to catch a big prey like a shark or a big mama Grouper, sound like fun to try to catch something that can eat you up.

thanks Frank, upon a quick further and closer review the reel is mostly covered by old dirt with grease and some superficial corrosion on the reel seat the rest marks are some scratches and dents from normal use and I have nothing against that, they just add character to the reel,  I also think it should clean up nicely, finger crossed to fing everything inside in good shape.

not surprise here amigo, I know you are a classy guy
the world would be different if at least half of the people act like this ohana site.
I try to help local guys and kids that have hard time with fishing equipment, with some
free parts, accesories and labor whenever l can, is my small part for spreading the ohana chain up
to Baja, Mx., I learned to act like that from all you guys.

decided to take some time to open the reel and check the rest of the internal parts and found this one needs extra TLC lots of crude grease, mud, sand, etc but not excesive corrosion and not broken parts other than the right side plate.

spool shafts seems not bend, hopefully after installing everything again with a new sideplate it doesnt bind, seems like the handle sideplate got broken by a big hit from a fall or something, cuz the drag star have 2 tips bent and one of the screws of the bridge is also bent at the tip

some others

all 4 rings are with some superficial corrosion, nothing that a good bath with vinegar wont take away

at the end, seems like I will need:
-  New drag washers and metal (drag kit)
-  new handle or just a 12/0 arm, I have a chinese big knob I can use.
-  new handle sideplate with bearing
-  reel clamp with nuts
-  maybe a new bearing on the non handle sideplate cap

so, it wasnt that bad  ;D ;D ::)

Alex, I couldn't come up with a handle, but I did come up with a nice arm from a 50VSW that fits that sleeve- you'll have to try it and see if the knob hardware fits the hole. Do you need clamp kit or turnbuckle brace kit, or both?

i have some brace bits as mentioned but i may have more after i build my CC 9/0's. Lemme see this week what it's gonna look like.

Alex,
I can send a new stock handle, drag kit and side plate.
There is only one catch.
You have to catch a shark on it from the shore. ;)
It has the steel gears, so that is a plus.

HAHA me too, I also would like to get a video of a shark caught on the beach

this zone of Baja is not known for good shark fishing from the shore, the tide goes long way when is low time, you can do clam digging because the bottom of the sea get dry for 1/2 mile or 800mts two times per day, the low tide gets steady for 2 or 3 hours them the high tide starts and it takes normally 4-5 hrs average to get to the normal point on the beach, and so on, every day, depending on the moon calendar some days the movement of the high and low tide are more notorious than others, thats one of the reason surf fishing is no bueno here even fishing with bait, cuz the current when the tide is coming is pretty strong even a 8oz spider lead gets returned by the current, normally for some surf fishing action I need to drive 2hrs south, the low and hign tide are not the same than here in San Felipe and you can do some normal fishing

so, this challenge needs to be performed in my favorite place, the beaches of Gonzaga Bay.

Alex,
Dug out your parts this evening.
Have the sideplate, 2 new bearings, two handles, Metals for the drag stack and Delrin's for top and bottom, but I can't find any drag washers.
I will cut them for you next weekend.
I have a lot going on and I'm not getting in the cold garage tonight.
The handles on the bottom are going to Darin.
I have been keeping him waiting too.
Trying to keep everything in Balance takes all I have.
I apologize for the delay Compadre,

well, with a little bit of shame but also applying the old saying, its better late than never, I took this project reel back to the working bench for good.

it was a really cool reel to work on it, one can see how the things were made back in the 60's-80's, some steel parts of the reel are as good as when they were new, others you can see the pass of time but still in pretty good shape, anyway, I decided to take the reel and ATTACK each part that needed work (actually all reel parts needed a lot of TLC).

first I worked on the main gear and pinion
check how it was the set when I took them out the reel
20190121_201713 ss.jpg

some rust remover, sanding and vinegar was use to clean the main gear and the pinion
20221119_222613 ss.jpg
20221119_222631 ss.jpg

check the quality of the steel on this pinion!! this thing might have 40-50 years and looks as good as new

then I moved to the spool, which has some rust and bit of pitted green corrosion on it, I left it on a bath of vinegar for a complete day, them cleaned it really good, did a light sanding on the pitted zones to leave it smooth, then I proceeded to put a light coat of white primer, then a coat of blank paint for automotive motor parts and lastly a coat of polyurethane as clearcoat protection.

the rust remover did a wonderful work here, it brought the shine of the steel back on the spool, check the sides of the spool

20221119_155524 ss.jpg
20221119_155544 ss.jpg

next it was the time for the bridge and sleeve.

this how it looks once cleaned and lightly sanded
20221119_222653 ss.jpg

but, HOUSTON we have a problem, one of the teeth of the sleeve is gone!
I dont know what kind of Sea Monster torn off a teeth of the sleeve like that, check !
20221119_222722 ss.jpg

luckily the rest of the teeth are still in good shape, it would be nice to know if that monster won the battle or if the sleeve was strong enough to fight the fish to the end.

remember the star?  it was bent, maybe the reel fell down and got a good hit which broke the right sideplate by the bearing and also bent one of the star tips.
well, I tried to straightened out and done it but I heard a Crack  :(  too late that tip is now broken on the lower part, ooh well I think I will try to use the reel as is until really using it a lot and NEED it to get that star new.

pretty sure that tip will fall down if I tilt it or as soon as I touch it to increase the drag
20221119_223051 ss.jpg
20221119_223055 ss.jpg

this is is how all the parts looked before putting them back on the reel, in the upper zone you can see some parts that my compadre Mr.Shark sent me few years ago  :-[  :P  thanks again Daron and also some parts that were sent by my compadre John (thorhammer).
20221119_215141 ss.jpg

now the new carbon washers and steel washers on the main gear, they flushed pretty good on the top of the main gear
20221119_223229 ss.jpg
20221119_223933 ss.jpg
20221119_224006 ss.jpg

and the rest are some pictures of the reel completely done and 98% ready to fish

20221120_010315 ss.jpg
20221120_010330 ss.jpg
20221120_010333 ss 1.jpg

this reel is MASIVE !!
check the size compared to my Sealine 900H (which I though it was masive), my 114h t4n1 XXN and my 112h
20221120_010135 ss.jpg

ok, this reel is still not ready to fish, once it was completely built I noticed the star was bending against the sideplate, it was pretty late and I was tired so, I didnt knew if I installed something wrongly inside the maingear or something and dont felt like taking out the sideplates to check so, I checked the schematics and noticed I still miss a spacing sleeve between the spring washer on the top of the main gear and the star.
so, I will order that spacing sleeve along an extra dog and spring, I will double dogged this weapon later on hopefully it wont take as long as took me to repair it  :P  ::)

Alex, the before and after pic says it all. GREAT save!! I forgot I sent you anything, and don't know what it was, but glad if I did- handle maybe? That spool would've kept on going with a coat of wax, but you did a bang-up job on it! I did a really bad 9/0 spool that Drew had actually blasted for the purpose and didn't get to; I need to bake it.

Great work, compadre!

Great work, compadre!

you sent me the handle blade (I still need to find a thick shaft knob for it) and the reel brace kit.
I was going to left the spool alone with just the light sanding, it felt good enough but naah, my OCD hit and I had to go the whole mile on it.

Glad to see you finally revive that Dinosaur Alex.
All you really need is a new sleeve and star.
Sure I got some around somewhere.
Those steel gears are tough as they come.
That reel can handle giants.
