I love those reels and have a bunch just to look at on the shelves. I will try to get some pictures posted. I have at least 30 of them. They are fun to up upgrade for maximum freespool.

From my blog: Kimberley Rod amd Reel.

ABU 7000 Syncro from eBay Japan.

The Syncro has not seen production for at least 20 years now but it has always held a very special place in my heart of days gone by when you could drive your car out to the end of the jetty and no one would even blink an eye. Days when 8kg winter mackerel were plentiful for the taking if you could sneak them past the giant groupers lurking beneath the pylons.

And this is where the Syncro was in a class all of itís own. You see, turning the handle backwards 180 degrees would put the reel into a controlled freespool so if a large predator did show up, with just a flick of the handle you could easily ďreleaseĒ your quarry to make another run, thus evading the groupers. Meanwhile you could walk 100 meters down the jetty and get a second chance at landing it. That is, if it didnít get nailed by a shark waiting out wide in the current.

My old flat-mate, Darryl owned one of these back then so this was always a very coveted reel for me and now after 20 years I finally own one myself. It looks to be in superb condition so I cannot wait for it to arrive.

I wonder what ever happened to Darryl?

Comment Brett Stevenson

Hey I got it! Arrived in the mail today. I thought, no way could it look as good in the flesh as those eBay glossies. But hell yeah, it really does! A 20-30yo reel in absolutely mint condition.

Think I will encase it in a block of transparent resin and put it on the shelf :)

Nice! What's everybody's favorite Abu?
Steve do you know the date yours was made?
This's a '73 5000. Casts surprisingly well. I'm impressed with the engineering on these. I wanted one with a minimum of plastic on it.
Probably not used too much and came from the N. Midwest(not used in saltwater?). It's got spool bushings and a 2 brake wt. centrifical cast control. I's thinkin maybe if I do any upgrades beyond c-tex drag washers, try b.bearings for the level winder. Whatdaya think?

@nelz.  beautiful picture buddy and looks like a nice reel, no wonder why you regret selling it

@Steve, nice vintage abu reel, love that you put them to work while everybody else have them on the shelf, myself included

@Gregg, these reels are also like legos, many parts from one model fit into another making some unique and custom reels, also there are tons of aftermarket upgrades to make them better, I say go for those Bearings on the leverwinder and bearing for the cog wheel, those are upgrades I've been having pending on my reel too.

'52-'54.  The Record was old technology when it was new.  The 5000 came out in '54 and it was new technology.  The original 5000 is probably my all-time favorite fishing reel and I've used them off and on since high school.

Among these are some oddballs you don't hear of often, the 5500KC3 and the 5500HCL, also the 550 Plus.  Made in Sweden but most likely cheapened for BPS, Kmart and Walmart.  Some have bearings, others bushings, some instant anti-reverse, others A/R dogs.

Around 2010 Dunn's Sporting Goods in Missouri was selling new 6000C for $45 plus shipping; no box or papers but never used.  I wish I'd ordered 3 or 4 more, because soon afterward the 6000C was discontinued.

My favorite of the lot is this 5000B I bought new around 1977-78.  A very versatile reel, can be used for throwing lures for largemouth b@$$ and stripers/hybrids and smaller river muskie or bottom fishing for catfish, drum, carp, and buffalo. To my knowledge in the past several years there have been no 5000 series manufactured with the bait clicker unless ordered aftermarket from Jerry Foran. There were some 4600 series from the factory with baitclickers named the Kokanee Special but they're very scarce.

@ Tincanary,  love vivid color of the small orange abu.

Thanks.  It's a 4500CS Rocket.  The 4500CS Rockets don't come up very often and I jumped at the chance to get it a month ago.  It's only 2 BB, but it does have fiber brake blocks.  It must've sat on a shelf for some time because it was a little crunchy out of the box, so I broke it down, cleaned it up, and added a thumb rest from a Record 40.  Smooth as a baby's behind now :).  Once the ice clears up around here, I'm going to take it smallmouth fishing on Lake St Clair.

The photos of my tricked out 5601C4 reels got "photobucketed" and I can't find another copy but will try to take more photos  of the assembled reels.  They both have clickers, AR bearings and dogs, Carbontex drag washers and different handles and handle arms.  One is a thumb bar and the other has the disengagement tab.  I built the non thumb bar reel because one of my friends I fish with kept hitting the thumb bar when reeling in, he said it was the reel going out of gear and I told him it was the operator and it works for me.

For the hell of it I bid on a 4600C4 on e-bay and was the only bidder, it will be here next Friday.... like I really need another reel but I have never seen a 4600 so now I have one.  It will be a good makanaw and large brown trout reel.

The 4600 is a nice reel.  I have a C3 I use for throwing hardware for steelhead.  Mine is new production and super smooth, especially after I cleaned up the Abu factory peanut butter job.

I'm stickin' with the "ABU Garcia" branch of that family tree.

So here's an updated photo with a few additions on the bottom 3 shelves. I've got about 20 more of the 2nd & 3rd shelf black "fulcrums" on rods out in the boat waiting for the weather & water to open up.  :)

Steve/Sal: The frame is from a guy who recently retired in England.  QTC frames on google.  Mag's from over there somewhere I don't recall.  Bought a chrome rocket for the side plates.  Ended up with two non-level wind surfcasters.  The QTC frames are used by competition distance casters from what I remember.  Very sold little reel.  Landed many fish during my years in Florida.

I love extra small reels and picked up this 1977 ABU 1500C a few months go.  Paid a hundred bucks which is more than I'm usually willing to spend but a little less than the going rate. On arrival it was found to have a bent stand and two bent stand posts so the spool was rubbing on the shroud.  It must have been dropped or walloped from above.  It was just set aside until now.

It's raining too much to do anything important so, while it was out for photos, I straightened out the stand and posts.  It has decent freespool now and should be good enough to fish with.  Some extraneous parts were also removed.

The next step is to relocate the uppermost post forward to make more room.  I'm sure it can be done but keeping the quick take apart feature will be tricky.  Will probably end up with three instead of two thumb screws.

Then, finally, put a smaller handle on the thing.

Thanks Andy!
A friend from Italy has shown some pics of Abu parts in the past, I just contacted him to see if he knows anything else.

He does not know that gentleman from UK. He said he had a bunch of replacement parts for ABU and sold most of them.

Haven't been able to have someone dig all my ABU's out for picks, but they're Pro
Rockets that have 5600 thumb bar frames installed, carbon fiber drags, and power handles so will bring yellow tail to the boat. Some were left in the 6500 models for deeper fishing applications.

It's my understanding the Pro Rockets were never exported to the US, but I've never had any problem finding parts.

The beast is just a updated inshore. It came with carbon drags. The pinion shaft has a special ceramic coating on it. I found stainless gears for a inshore that fit my beast. I installed a gear sleeve with a bearing. Also a ceramic pawl. Then added ceramic hybrid bearings. Then installed a aluminum idler gear with dual bearings. There are tons of upgrades for these reels. You just have to look for them.

Picked this up cheap at the flea market the other day. After alot of cleaning and TLC...

It got new CF drag from Smoooth, and a stainless steel handle from a Shimano Bantam. The thumb rest is missing (but I don't miss that).

I ended up removing the cruddy old information stickers that wrap around the side covers so now the reel remains an enigma to most.  8)  I think it looks much better without them though. All in all, I have a nice inshore beater reel for when I don't want to muck up my beauty queens.

Care to guess the model?

Oh yes, I think so anyway. I used to have a pristine, unused one. Sold it and bought this one instead as something that could actually be used instead of just being a shelf queen.

Come to think of it, this might have a lightweight aluminum spool I made in it; maybe that is why it is so shiny.

I also made a stainless box for it.

Here's a recent pick, don't know diddly about Abu's, but thought it was a cool bundle anyways. If anybody wants this package let me know, I thought my brother would want it for his lake, but he just bought a bunch of new bass gear and doesn't need it. Here's what the guy wrote down for me:

Abu Mag 523 & 323

Abu 523 and 323, reels were made about mid 1980's and are in mint condition.
Magnetic cast control instead of bushings. Level wind and a few magnets removed
from tournament distance casting reel; also custom crossbar attached.
Backup reel in stock condition; like new, never used, with spare spool.
Spare parts, handles, gears, lube, drags, parts diagrams, etc.
With original boxes.

Didn't the 30 inspired you to make a mini version, or am I imagining things?

Lightweight is a bit of an understatement, 222gms compared to 624gms for the stock spool is a significant reduction of 402gms (around 14 oz). I think Jack Erskine was doing a similar modification to these big Ambassadeurs, back when they were used more.

Yes, that is right. I named it the Ambassadeur 3.0 HST. There are a few threads at various forums about it. Just google it; you should find it easily.

Lightweight is a bit of an understatement, 222gms compared to 624gms for the stock spool is a significant reduction of 402gms (around 14 oz). I think Jack Erskine was doing a similar modification to these big Ambassadeurs, back when they were used more.

Mike

Yeah, I talked with him about that once upon a long ago. He made a few spools too, but i don't know what they looked like. Maybe not quite as ambitious as this one; this was really quite a lot of work. I still have callouses from the rotary table. It could have been simplified and had some more weight shaved off.

It's no secret I've been fascinated by both the detailed design and machining skills needed to create this working scale model of the Ambassadeur 30 since I first saw it. To see it 'wet and working' just confirms the brilliance of your work. Thanks for the inspiration.

A knurled sleeve on the handle/main gear stem housing. It was actually made by Zangi of Italy, though, and called the 3V. ABU sold it as the 999.

Just came in the mail, supposedly from 1968, I don't know much about ABU's but thing thing has a lot of character with it's see-thru spool and cool handle!
It's been on a shelf for 40yrs... it spins great and is smooth as heck. I want to service it, put some line on it and take it to my brothers lake and catch a bass or three...

Hey Darin, she's a beauty. I learned a bunch working on Abu's they are a pleasure to work on. Btw, that's a removable arbor on the spool, allows you to put less line on.

Neat reel and find, Darin!

Check the # on the bottom of the foot. The Black C was introduced to the public in 1967. Their serial #s started with 1001. The 3 screw model started in Jan '68 with a foot # close to 35100, +- 45. In June of '71 they went to the 6 digit foot #, mm,yy,lot, i.e. 087100-Aug'71first lot or batch. Maybe we can come close to when it was made.

Great find Darin! I've been catfishing 5000s for smaller channels...love 'em! If you're used to bass fishing modern baitcasters you may find the 5000 a bit slow, but no worries, that gives you an excuse to seek out a 5500c! 8)

Mike, I grew up bass fishing, but haven't done it much in years, it's been all about the salt for about 30 yrs.
It will be fun no matter what, hanging with my brother and using a similar reel that I used many moons ago...
How are the cats biting lately? or is it too cold where you live?

The fish are probably biting well...but we just can't get on the river. It's been swelled so high most of the shore access has been under water. Then when the water recedes all that mud is left behind. Things are settling out now...should get a line wet soon. We Crappie fished a lake the past 2 days, no big'uns but caught a good share. The ol' Penn 720z got it done again! 8)

Probably mid 1970ish. According to ABU log books, #189010 is the highest serial number entered before lot numbers took over sometime in mid 1971. 067100....June 1971 is one of the earliest mmyylot #s known for 5000C after the numbering change.

Jerry Foran here is with us here in Florida and I get my stuff from him usually within 2 or 3 days.  Hookless.com  He has made me a dozen Frankenreels from his inventory of souped up parts.  Little 2500's for bass, 4500's for Snook.  Its a slippery slope........Snook fishing with a custom reel.  New stuff just isn't good enough for me anymore.  Its led me to custom rods and even to only using custom Daniel's Florida wooden plugs.  Don't tell my wife but I'm even thinking about making my own wooden skiff from plans out of an old Popular Mechanics!

Haha Alex donít see daylight anymore that holes gotten pretty deep. I do have a 5500c and 4500 that I used it a float tube for quite awhile. Great tough reels and not many moving parts to break. Seemed like more and more white sharks along the coast here so no more float tubing for me! I should clean those up and get them going again
All the parts available for abuís makes it very tempting especially seeing the reels on here

That's what I'm doing, 1600 on a 7'6" Koke rod with 6lb mono.  I actually prefer it more than my standard 9'+ steelhead rods, much easier to carry through the woods and the fight is top notch.

Abus in pretty good shape have been going at reasonable prices on ebay lately, got this Abu 6000 in the mail today.  Probably made in the early 1970s, number on the bottom of reel foot is 730604.

I've already taken it apart, given it a good cleaning and strung it up with 17 lb Cajun Red mono.  No real open space here on the hill but I was getting 60 yd practice casts with a 1 oz bank sinker until I hit the top of the goat shed.

BTW, here's an old story in a Field & Stream written about the old red Abus.  https://www.fieldandstream.com/articles/gear/2002/06/red-reel

Wow, she's a beauty. Those old red Abu's have the richest red finish of any reel to date. That's a June 1973, 4th revision.

Btw, if you're going to fish it, keep a look-out for high speed gear sets available for these reels.
