Title: Dam Ocean 4040 Reel about 6/0 size
Post by: 54bullseye on March 22, 2019, 02:53:25 PM
I saw this the other morning on eBay you could start bidding at $75 or buy now for $100 so I looked at it about 10 times and couldn't take it any more and bought it. I like stuff I haven't seen before no mater what country they were made in !! Lever drag reels are my favorite but the star drags are nice to. Any way from googling it I found very little info on them there was some one on ORCA back in 2009 that was asking about one and then a German website that showed pictures of one and it showed two models but the writing was all German ! It did have 1958 to 1967 they were made. I had never seen or heard of one and was surprised at how big it was when I got it. I don't think it was ever used it looks new. One guy on ORCA said they were made by Penn but after opening it part way up I don't think there is any Penn association !!

I am going to post a bunch of pictures for you and you can click twice on them for close ups. Please Let me know if any one out there has one or knows anything more about them. I figure maybe Dr. Rob might chime in as he seems up on overseas reels.  Thanks for looking ~   John Taylor     "I put a 113H 4/0 next to it to show size"

Tail plate is similar to Penn but the other side is way different !! Notice the way the gear is lifted and dropped for free spool .  Thanks for looking  John Taylor

I was on the phone with John Elder "reel guru from ORCA" for a while talking about the reel and we both figure it is some type of quick take apart feature but I can't get it to work ??? The reel is around 50 to 60 years old and has probably never been apart so could be just a tight fit and stuck. You can see the little lever that it moves on inside of tail plate. I don't want to damage it but will give it another try soon and report back.  Thanks !   John Taylor

The free spool mechanism reminds me a bit of Ocean City's 112.

That's what I thought too.  Isn't that a knock-down lever John?  Solid reel for sure.

Steve the free spool lever just goes back and forth like a Penn not lift up and knock down when reeling like some Ocean City's !!   John Taylor

Nice. I like how the yolk and lever seem to be one unit and apparently there's no eccentric jack.

Thanks for posting the information. That puts my reel between 1958 and 1963 the first model. Anybody got a second model or a box ??   John Taylor
