Title: 50visx rod clamp bolts
Post by: shellback on April 28, 2019, 03:35:40 PM
this is an obscure question but...

trying to find small head square shoulder cap screws to fit my visx 50 reel stand. I would rather not butcher a normal cap screw if anything aftermarket is available. the stock ones are ridiculously short in length imo. and altering the reel stand is machine work im not equipped to do.
any ideas???

i checked and the thread is a 1/4-20, so any stainless steel bolt will work.

welding threaded studs to a new reel stand.
it would be enjoyable to meet the engoineer that came up with penn international rod clamp arrangements...

anyway, the big problem I am having with mounting hardware is the studs falling out of the stand. should be able to fix this with plastic self retaining washers...

thanks cal!

Same design that it has been for about 15 years, a few complaints over the years but the majority have no issues?

Would you please post pictures of what you are talking about?  I'm sorry, I'm a visual person, and it's hard for me to understand, in this case, without pictures.

Thank you.

I just completed some work for a buddy, who's also Ohana. He broke a stand-up rod with a big planer, at the reel seat. We decided a bent-butt number 4 would not break before the line does, so I did some surgery and retrofitted the rod to ferrule. I had his 50SW in for service- preselect and follower and stuff all corroded together, so full service and new parts. He got 5/0 knobs from Alan, who sent to me for mount on new blades. the reel was missing the clamp kit, and back on topic of this thread, stock kit doesn't fit #4 seat diameter using stock stamped clamp (now they are SS BTW). To remediate, I measured an extra 1/4" vs. stock and cut two 1/4-20 machine screws to length with dremel. I used the stock acorns to set the studs to the frame: BE SURE YOU LOOK INSIDE FRAME TO SET STUDS FLUSH WITH INSIDE RADIUS SO LINE WON"T HIT AN EDGE!!!!. I then used SS nylocks on top of the clamp, but you could use nylocks for both for security, or full SS acorns if you are mounting to a specific rod where the blind nut wont matter. I put nylocs on top because with the tension on the screw, the stock acorns shouldn't back out of the frame and since this reel will be on constant stress in a rod holder i want the clamp nuts to not work lose. I greased everything liberally: screws, nuts, reel seat, both sides of cork tape clamp gasket I made. i almost always add this part: one, no electrolysis, but still grease it to keep salt out; 2) clamps don't always fit rods perfectly,
and the cork makes a fuller mate, just like the head gaskets they mimic. Teflon washers between nuts and any aluminum surface are a good idea; I was out of them but will add during the next service.

beautiful work thor

my problem is more of an annoyance. penn's stock setup on visx WORKS. its the fact that the studs fall out of the stand when you try to attach the reel to a pole- the studs provided are too loose in the slot in the reel stand. so the solutions are:
1. machine a new stud with a larger head that provides a tighter (interference fit)
2. find a plastic retaining washer that fits over the threaded stud to increase the size of the stud head
3. weld new studs to reel stand
4. machine a new reel stand with a tighter clearance for the head of the stud
will take pics when I figure it out

Why won't a couple of ss washers & nuts keep the studs in place?

its interesting (to me, at least) that the reel seat attachment screws are backordered from penn for months...
many questions about the function of this design- they must want to sell LOTS of these screws

I sold the reel
