Post by: steelfish on July 06, 2019, 04:48:10 PM
A 7.1 earthquake rocked Southern California on Friday night. Multiple fires broke out after it struck 11 miles northeast of the city of Ridgecrest.

a 7.1 earthquake is a really strong one, I live in a earthquake zone so I know them

The earthquake happened during the Dodgers game & the foul poles were shaking. They played on.      Rudy

We felt it here in santa  barbara but not the one on the 4th. It shook here for about a minute or so. A buddy called from the landing in San Diego and they felt it down there too

Apparently it was felt all the way to Sacramento and Las Vegas! I didn't notice anything in Santa Cruz though.

Definitely felt it in the Inland Empire (Riverside).  To any of the Ohana that don't live or are not familiar with the area, the whole "Southern California" thing is a bit of a misnomer.  Technically, yes, it's SoCal.  But it's a big state.  The area feeling the most effects right now is the High Desert, and while my heart goes out to the people up there, the major urban centers and infrastructure of SoCal are separated from this by a mountain range and the San Andreas Fault.  Thankfully it appears no lives have been lost, and it definitely serves as a reminder that I spent this morning making sure wall anchors were secure, hit the wrench I have hanging on the gas meter with some WD40 to keep the rust away, and survival supplies are still "in date" and not just a bunch of bulging expired cans...

Has anyone heard from Fred?  Fred, please let us know you're okay when you can. Knowing Fred, he's likely out helping his neighbors.

The duration of both was pretty impressive. All is well in Capo Beach.

Felt last nights quake up here in Crestline. Not very violent but a long rocking motion up here on the mountain. Fred is definitely closer, northwest of Ridgecrest.  No damage at my house.  The wife and I were living in Northridge for that one, and it was a real wild ride.....Bill

I think the worst I ever felt was the Landers/Big Bear quakes.  I was up by Lake Arrowhead (5 Points) and it really rocked and rolled. It was worse than the Northridge quake.

I didn't feel anything.  But then again I had a half empty bottle of zin in front of me.  Maybe that's why I didn't feel anything.   ;D Dominick

Dominic, if you drink the other half in a hurry, you will possibly feel the after shock, cheers Don

I felt both quakes here in Atwater Ca. The clipboard on the wall at work started swinging. I hurried  up and checked online to see where it was.

A slow long roller here in north OC. Maybe 15-20 seconds long and several neighbors came out of there house along with myself.

The strongest I felt was what they now call a 5.9 centered about 1/2 mile from my house. Truly violent, stuff falling off the walls. I lost one big screen TV, some dishes, picture frames and other stuff but no one hurt. Thank god.

It sounds like no one was seriously hurt in the last quake, but I have not been watching the news. I just pray everyone made it out ok.

We felt both of the big quakes , I felt multiple aftershocks.
We still are experiencing aftershocks on a regular basis.
The first was what we call a shaker , fairly short duration , maybe 5-6 seconds .
Not too bad .
The second quake was much more serious , a long period " Roller " that had both myself and Miss Mari looking for the nearest doorway . We have no damage that I can find , but we are on  a post and frame foundation so the
90 +/- yo cabin has been thru this before. Flexible has it's attributes.........
I'll check on Fred in the morning but I am sure he is OK . His house is much more modern and on flat ground unlike us on a pile of granite on the side of a hill ........

And we caught a ton of Blue Gill and Large Mouths with our son Dylan , Shorty and Miss Taylor from the Big Pond .
Also smoked ribs , chicken , watermelon , iced nectarines , potato salad ,fresh green salad from the garden.
And a few cans of Rolling Rock 💪 or 3 .

We're good, Jonathan —

We never felt either big quake?  And we are only a few hundred yards from your house...

Might have been driving, or watching Star Trek when Janeway was about to eject their warp core to save the ship from the Kazon.

Either way, no damage to either our house, or Voyager.

And all of the reel parts are still in their proper bins...

Best,

Fred

Glad to hear no major damage. I'm in the Central Valley just South of Sacramento. Lights swayed but no damage

Glad you all are ok Fred !
I just found a slipped  foundation post on the SW corner .
Still on the concrete piling but I will have to anchor it back down as it broke both bolts at the base.
All in all we came out OK given the magnitude.
Once again , God was watching us .....
Thank you Lord .
Best ,
JT

bryan and i were in cayucos, then went fishing on july 5th.  the earthquake likely shut down the rockcod bite.  it was really slow.  i saw the same thing with salmon fishing in the san francisco area years ago.
