Title: Smokin' 501
Post by: Jeffro on July 24, 2019, 10:24:02 PM
Thought I'd share a recent project... a Pro Challenger 501.  Purchased as a scratch n dent, decided to give an anodizer who specializes in paint ball guns the opportunity to do something different.
Effect is intended to resemble gray smoke on black with reverse on spool and handle.  Internally, it sports all stainless, double dogs and a Bryan Young 5-stack.  Kudos to Alan C for helping me out with this one!

That should be against the law.....and who's gonna pay to have my jaw reattached  ;)

I dub this 501 "The gunslinger"

....and dont let Alan C see this or he'll charge extra for his blemished reels !!

That is pretty wild. I hope the anodizing holds up to saltwater.
Very well done.

There are a lot of nice reels on our site, but this one stands alone...It looks amazing!
Maybe we'll talk, I might have a non anodized kit and I also have Ted's blanks.
Very nice job!

That's a real beauty. Is the design put over the original anodizing?      Rudy

Thanks for all the positive feedback.  Rework was totally unnecessary but sometimes modding is a close second to fishing... at least around here!

Original anodizing had to be stripped.  I had my concerns but turned out fine as it functions beautifully.  Alan C provided me with some replacement click spring posts as they were not really removable but had to come out being brass.  Alan says new versions have screw-in posts.

Nice reel, it looks like he did a great job with the anodizing! Those paint ball gun blokes have made dying anodize a real art form.

If people knew how tiny the scratches and dents really are on Alan's discounted Jiggy kits he'd be out of them in a few days. My 501 still has the original anodizing and you have to turn the reel to just the right angle to even see the tiny scratches.  8)

While it needs a Sal handle let me say that's one bad "tooshy" reel you've created.
Simply beautiful to these eyes.
Thanks for sharing,
Dom

Yeah, It is kind of cheap, but little profit is good enough for me. The scratch n dent kit is $135 that will include one piece frame, right side plate, ball bearings, bearing caps, rod clamp and side plate screws. $190 will give you that kit and a spool. If I had the name as good as Tiburon, I could charge way more. But, I am cool being a little guy.

Tiburon doesn't offer two piece kits.

They do. Frame and spool. That is 2 pieces.

"Scratch n dent" was never an issue, very minor.   Weak excuse to help justify playing with refinishing.  I was planning to try it with one of my reels and just picked this one.
Considering spooling with 60 hollow, 40 top shot and using it for SE Alaska Chinook and Halibut.  Would love to do another San Diego trip sometime as well, the only 3-day'er I went on was awesome.  The 40 lb range yellowfin pulled like locomotives compared to what I'm used to but I think this reel would do well.

Jeffro,
I fish 65lb braid and 30lb XXX Izor on mine and it handled yellowtail and yellowfin up to 40lbs (so far) without breaking
a sweat. I have Alan C.'s JMX500 gear set in mine and love it!!!
