Picked at a Thrift store yesterday... $8. A handmade Peetz mahogany
and brass fishing reel alarm clock. The alarm has a "fish on" scenario from
initial drag activation thru hook up. I did not know the history of these
Canadian made wooden reels. Long history, look pricey. Just a lucky find.

Just pure-D luck.... I had never heard of Peetz reels. I just liked the look.
Appear to be a "boutique" builder of high end stuff. I bundled this with a
Imperial "Fishing Knife" that now resides in my Brides tackle box. 8) $18.

Peetz are cool reels, with a long and interesting history as a utilitarian mainstay in the British Columbian salmon fishery since the 1930s. Cool guys still use them. I have one myself, (which I do not use) a 1960s 6" Recorder with the extendable handle feature.
I visited the factory (a wonderful place... sorta dingy, semi-dimly lit warehouse space with old oil-stained wooden floors, smelling of sawdust and machine oil. They have been using the same machines for ages; some of them since the beginning) a couple of years ago and met the new owner as well as the former owner and other long-time employees. Really cool people, doing what they can to keep the Peetz flag flying. They still make the wonderfully practical and iconic Peetz trolling sinkers too. Those alarm clocks are just a gift-shop item.
There is a great book about them, called Peetz: A Reel For All Time, by Doug Pollard. Warmly recommended.
