Title: 2018-19 Calcutta Conquest 400 is Squeaking
Post by: Reverendpdp on August 14, 2019, 01:16:25 AM
This is a brand new reel, with new aftermarket Yumega knobs, which have oiled bearings.  When I reel I hear a faint squeak.  I put a few drops of oil on the line guide, rail, spool lip, and knobs, but the noise persists.  I was trying to isolate the noise but cannot tell where it's coming from.  I did NOT remove the spool control knob, or the handle, or the centrifugal brake assembly, hoping to avoid breaking down this new reel.  Do you suggest I do a strip down of this reel to add lube / oil?  Any ideas?

If you could post a video via youtube, that would help.  it's very difficult to even conceive a location without any additional recorded or live cues.

Also, what is he frequency.  Once every handle revolution, once every spool revolution, constant?

Ok here's a short vid taken this morning.  The squeaking is not coming from the line guide.  It seems to be in the handle area, or even internally in the gears.  Don't want to do a major strip down, but if it is relatively easy, I suppose I could remove the handle, drag, and side plate.  I just don't know if doing so will have all sorts of parts flying out...

I'm guessing the roller bearing needs a thin film of lube. A little CorrosionX works well.

Do you mean the roller clutch bearing, or some other ball bearing?  Is this easily accessible for a relative newbie like me?  I'm not seeing any Youtube vids on breaking down this particular reel.

well, dont fear to open a new reel, sometimes I do it just "because" when I have a new reel in my hands , some guys (maybe just ohana guys) that like to service the reels when are new and havent gone to the water yet, many reels dont come fully protected by grease and its better to protect the bearings and some other areas with the best grease/oil you have to prevent having problems in the short future.
with that said, I think its a shame that a high class reel like this came with those noises but you only have two options, send it back or do a complete service and pretty sure that noise will be gone.

Yes, roller clutch bearing, aka roller bearing. It won't come out without removing the sideplate, but you might be able to slide out the sleeve it rides on (Roller Clutch Inner Tube) by removing the handle. Once you have the sleeve out, a thin film of CorrosionX or other quality oil is all that's needed.

Ok so I opened the reel up.  It was not bad, except for a itty-bitty ball detent and spring, that took me forever to find out where it came from.  I was looking at the schematic where it showed it belonged inside the cap of the spool tension control nob.  Come to find out, it didn't belong there. It came from the drag's main gear.  Go figure.  Well after oil and lube and reassembly, the noise "seems" to be gone.  I'll have to check it closely later on to be fully convinced.

In the meantime, thank you very much for your input.  It saved me from having to ship it back.

Regards,
Dennis

You got lucky, the detent has a habbit of flying to places unknown.
