Title: Custom Rod & Reel Cabinet
Post by: Alto Mare on November 03, 2011, 01:31:28 AM
Last week I came across some old, rough-sawed lumber and I decided to recycle it. I couldn't think of a better way to use it, so I made this custom rod & reel cabinet. I always told my daughter that I would find the "perfect" place to display the fish she made me when she was little...well, here it is! Problem is, my wife took one look at the cabinet and complained, "I don't have one working drawer in my kitchen and you're wasting your time on this?" Oh well, you can't please them all, right?  Enjoy!

Sal, I'm speechless.
A treasure trove of surpassing quality and truly the 'perfect' place to display your daughter's fish.
And in a week?!
Wow.
There's some real talent around here.
Well done, Justin

Thanks Rob!
Although I would love to come to your house, I'm going to have to decline the offer at this time. My wife has been waiting 10 years for a new kitchen; one more project related to my fishing crap ( that's what she calls my beautiful stuff ) and I will need to find a new home ;D.

Wow, that's awesome Sal.  By the way, what are those colored dots on the reels for?

Post by: Alto Mare on November 03, 2011, 09:44:40 AM
Thanks Bryan!
The stickers are my notes. Some of those reels have brass gears, some have cast aluminum, some have been customized with two anti reverse dogs and some are just to remind me if I serviced the reel or not. Try those stickers, they don't leave a mark and are not affected by grease, they stay on for as long as you need them to.

You are the man, Sal ...ain't no painting you with one brush!  You're wife is lucky to have someone with such abilities... must be a hell of a woman!
Now go re-do the kitchen so you can get more gear.  If you re-do the bathroom as well I bet you get whatever you want ;)
Great job bro!

Ever thought you might just have too much tackle or are you one of the subscribers to the theory "he who dies with the most toys wins!"?

I'm just jealous if you can't already tell.

Thanks guys!
Whiteman, you musn't have seen Broadway's collection.

Dom , if I give her a new kitchen, there won't be anything left for my gear ;)
By the way, there are a couple of brand new 118's and 116's in that cabinet. Most of my new reels are stashed away in their boxes.

Thanks again guys, I'm glad that you enjoyed it.

Hey Dom -
What do you think is in his closet that he hasn't told us (or his wife) about? ;D ;D
Oops Sal. You better move that stuff before your wife looks in the closet! :o

Gotta love a guy with "a couple of brand new 118's and 116's in *THAT* cabinet." Did ya notice that very important word there, Rob!?!  I bet he's got that guy in the photo of the month last month in his closet making him all those nice BRAND NEW reels for his cabinets, displays, and fishing  ;D

...Oh, Hafnor, you probably do have a lot of gear... if YOU think you do ;)

That cabinet is awesome!!!!!  How do you attach the spinning reels to the door like that? I need to get going on a project like that to organize my stuff!
Title: Re: Custom Rod & Reel Cabinet
Post by: Alto Mare on November 06, 2011, 04:40:44 PM
Thanks, Mean Machine! I'm glad you like it. That's a very good question that you're asking. You must know how hard it is to store spinners safely. What I did was to cut a piece of  1X PVC 2" wide. I then placed two grooves in the back, about 3/8" deep x 3/4" wide, the grooves are 5 1/2" apart so that the reels don't touch. I also notched the top of the piece so as to keep the reel from moving sideways. To keep the foot protected from damage, I placed a piece of vinyl on the back side and screwed the piece on top. Here is a picture of what I did. I'm showing it on wood, but I actually used PVC. By the way, I just installed some nice locks on the cabinet to keep my wife from selling it all off! Hope you find this information helpful. Take care, Sal

Sal:  Just got back from Cabo.  So this is a couple of days late.  Wow! that is really cool.  I need something like that to put my wine in.  Come on out to CA, I'll buy your plane ticket and feed you while you work ;D.  Check the fishing reports in a day or so.  Dominick

Thanks Dominick, I'm glad you like it. I've been checking the fishing report daily, someone mentioned that they would post around thanksgiving  :-\.  Offering me the ticket to come over tells me that you didn't do too bad. Glad to have you back safe...can't wait for the full report ;).

Thanks also to you Anthony...Glad you liked it.

Welcome aboard, John! I'm glad you like my stuff.
I was tempted with the crown molding, but didn't want to press my luck with the wife ;D.
She's already complaning that my fishing room is starting to looks better than her kitchen...isn't it supposed to? ;)

Really well done, Sal --

What did you assemble the face frame with -- dowels, Biscuits, or pocket screws?

And did you use a router table for the edges -- or a shaper?

Small thing -- but nice the way you lined up the cupboard door knobs with the drawer knob.

Lot of talent!

Best,

Fred

Hey Sal, from one wood wittler to another, that is a thing of beauty. It's amazing what can be done with recycled lumber. I'm sure the tree that gave you the lumber is a very proud parent of your baby!!! ;D

You know that sound they use in the movies when something really miraculous happens, it sounds like the angels are singing with violins backing them up, like the heavens opens up. That's the sound that comes out when I see those pics. Impressive work sir!!!, now go fix your wife's cabinet.

Wow 👌👌. You're the new standard to judge our lack of accomplishment...... if I was to try this stunt I'd be sleeping 💤 outside.   I hardly have time to paint the bathroom 🚽.  Maybe I fish 🐠 too much?   Thanks 🙏 for the renewed hope!!!!  Very nice job, buddy,  it shows you organized.  Thanks for sharing.
