Title: Peninsula Fishing Club - Huli Cat - rockcod/crab combo November 7, 2019
Post by: Alans Buddy on September 16, 2019, 02:26:29 AM
The recreational crab season is tentatively scheduled to open November 2, 2019.

We have a crab/cod combo charter on the Huli Cat Thursday November 7, 2019.

The cost is $175 which includes the trip and tip. It does not include fish cleaning.

The crab should be big.

We will have some custom PFC jigs to raffle off.

We would love to have some AT members along.

Let me know if you would like to join us on the trip or if you have any questions.

You can register here:
https://peninsulafishingclub.com/activities-events

OR, send me a message for my address to register with a check (preferred so I can avoid PayPal fees)

Thanks!
Ben

I am planning meat sticks for the trip. I left Alan enough coppa awhile back to last him a few months. Maybe I will do some salami next week. It should be ready by then. I bought a pork shoulder the other day to have around just for that purpose.

They set their pots at the start of the recreational season which is supposed to be November 2.
IIRC, I was told the Huli Cat drops about 30 pots.
Go fish for a few hours then pull pots.
Fun times!

Here's some info for the trip from the Huli Cat:

6-6:15am, at the boat, check in, sign up, get familiar with rod and where to fish, find a sack.  Easy Mart, across the highway from the Harbor, has squid at better prices.  Looking forward to it!

It's Happening!!!

Local Crabbers are getting ready to go Crabb'n!!!!

My Lovely Jennifer was driving to pick up a girlfriend for lunch yesterday when we saw these two YOUNG men getting ready for Crab season.

They both came flying out asking her, "May we HELP YOU???"

Jen recounts the story of her younger brother during the late 1970's working on a Tender in Kodiak, AK.  She commented your pots are TINY compared to Alaska King Crab pots!!!   They all laughed and she was on her way,

This will be my first crab trip, can anyone provide pointers?

I understand the limit is 10 per fisherman (is that right?), any chance we each get that many each?

How long do you boil them? Something tells me from years ago they are done when red, but that might be incorrect.

If you can't eat all you have the first day but could eat more the second, are you better off cooking them all and then refrigerating or freezing them right away, or can you keep them alive a day out of the water?

Do you use straight water, or is crab / crawfish boil a good seasoning?

Feel free to lay it all out! I am soo looking forward to this trip, I missed last year.

Thanks

Rob

Rob,

yes, 10 Dungeness Crab is the daily limit.  Done 3 of these Crab & rockfish combos in mid-Nov. and mid-Dec. - was successful on all three trips -

10 Crab
10 Rockfish
2 Lingcod

Boil or Steam them for 15-20 minutes, then plunge into ice water to stop the cooking BUTT ask Dominick he is the REEL pro.

We've salted the water before and the crab was salty tasting.

I look forward to meeting you.

Thanks Wayne! I don't have a big steamer, but do have a turkey fryer setup. It sounds like later trips will have folks cooking them at the dock/parking lot. I have family at home to feed so I am working on my plan. We met last year on the rockfish trip that was a makeup for the combo trip that went south when the HuliCat had a mechanical, I believe- You have a smile and attitude one could not forget! I hope I am remembering correctly. You commented on my hat that almost went overboard, I made that thing and will swim for it.

Rob,

I agree with Mikeysm,  Boil your crab when we return to the dock.  They are set up for a quick boil and the fee is reasonable.

Also, great job on the Penn label sewn on your hat!

Do you take in-home clothing repairs and alternations??? ;D

I look forward to putting your face again to your name... AGAIN!

Weather looks FANTASTIC for Thursday.

Is braid good to go on the HuliCat? Some outfits won't allow it (Stagnaros).

Do they sell beer or anything on board? I need to be properly prepared.

Ben

Ahh, Ben, you remember well. That is the venerable Sit and Fish bucket by Frabill. Mine is old and works well. The new ones are not as user friendly, per Amazon comments. I have had that at least 20 years. It gets heavy loaded with brewskies, that is for sure.

I'll bring it.  8)

GOOD IDEA WITH TERRIBLE EXECUTION
January 5, 2018
Verified Purchase

Really disappointing. Very good idea, and seemed like an affordable option for an insulated bucket, but terrible execution. The top is WAY too hard to get off. I had to use a flathead screwdriver to pry off the lid. The description also gives the impression that the bucket itself is insulated -- but it isn't. Its a large, standard material bucket, with a smaller and separate styrofoam container inside. A gas station styrofoam cooler would accomplish the same thing for a lot less cash. <-- BUTT, you can't sit on those.

Thank you all for making it a great event!

I think everyone pretty much had limits of rockfish.
The crab pots were stuffed.
I'm not sure how many pots were pulled to get 260 + crab but I think it was less than 10. The first pot had 46.

Perfect weather cool and overcast, no wind and flat calm seas.  Fantastic people to fish with all around.  The only disagreements were about the size of the fish that got away.
Thank you Penninsula fishing club and Ben especially for bringing us all together for another awesome day on the water.

And if Ben allows me to add my few photos, we'll start now!

If I can summarize the day, it was FANTASTIC and just damn too quick for me!!!

We left the harbor at 6:30 AM, had a few usual stragglers, late on time,

LIMITED OUT of Rockfish and Lingcod by 10 AM - let me say that again, LIMITED OUT by 10 AM :o

Geared up for pulling in Crab Pots - LIMITED OUT of 10 crabs per person in 6 POTS pulled,

and back at the Harbor by 1:03 PM.

Man, I was back home, gear cleaned up and watching Oprah at 4 PM!!!   Kidding!!!  Oprah doesn't do daytime TV anymore.

Enjoy.

Look at the shocked look on my wife's face, now that is funny.   ;D ;D Jim and Janice are the restaurant owners (Toa Yuen) in the Laurelwood Shopping Center.  They are great friends and hosts.  Dominick

MO-meister!

Did not.  REELY had no time that day, we fished for ONLY 2 1/2 hours.  Less than 3 hours and we all limited out on our 10 Rockfish and 2 Lingcod.

PLAN on bringing it on our Dec. 14 Crab & Rockfish combo day.

Your reel sits on my workbench, and I give it a spin or two each day just to enjoy the easy of turning.  You've done a nice job with this reel.

BUTT back to the subject, I plan on spooling it up for using it for a few drops for MONSTER Lingcod.  But casually, it is the DIRECT DRIVE handle spinning that has me concerned.   Dropping a 10 oz. jig 240 feet into the cold Pacific waters, all the time having the oversized PENN 24-310 handle spinning right next to my hand, well, let's see if I don't end up in the ER for the day!!!!! ;D

Watch for that post on Dec. 15!!!!!!!

Wayne

Yes indeed...you'l want to keep those fingers out of the way on the drop. It's like my ol' shop teacher in school used to say..."and remember boys, fingers don't grow back!"  :D

Wayno, that's what your thumb is for.  Wear gloves.  Hey wait??? Is this a spinning reel?  Don't put your thumb in there.  Dominick
