I have always thought that since the bail expands automatically to the open position with just a touch of the finger -- that the lock kept the bail from opening during transport -- which could make a mess of your spooled line -- or even get caught on something, causing damage to the reel.

There may be another explanation that makes more sense...

Best,

Fred

Thanks Fred,
That's what I was thinking also, from pictures at the Mitchell museum it found on all the auto bails. The only other explanation had something to do with English match fishing and didn't make much sense as I could find no other spinning reels with this feature.
