Here you'll notice the cutout on jigmaster for the main gear, and the new seat that is designed to cover this to prevent water intrusion

Here is the 99 width seat with Cortez Conversions custom jigmaster side plates

 These seats will also fit a multitude of conventional Penns. 49, 149, 1/0,lb65,66,67,squidder 140,145 146,surfmaster 100, 150,200, jigmaster 501,99,500.  180, 49a,209,309 and several more stock Penn reels

Here is one that might get attention of a few here. The born again seaboy 190. Sorry Mo, I couldn't help myself

These seats accept long screws, so toss those short seat screws aside and put in long screws for optimum performance

I also have a limited amount of my 3 piece 113YTS frame kits.

Silver, black, and Red(clamp or spool not included. Tom H is your guy for clamps....Tiburon or Randy Pauly for the YTS spools).

It's been a couple years, but for now they are back. I never get tired of looking at these kits paired up with Cortez new style plates

Very good idea Ted, now we'll have many more options.
Having Tom involved machining these and you as a designer, I'm sure these will be better than expected.
Please put me down for a few sets of red-black and silver... if available.
I prefer squidder  size.
If you have 145 size snd 146 I'll take those two sizes.
Thanks Ted, oh and thanks to Tom as well.

The 3 seat sizes are 49, 66, 500....this is the stamped number on stock Penn seat. I know zilch about Newell, but I'm betting Sheridan and a few others would know which seat fit some newell models

Not 100% sure, but I think that guy selling stainless posts on eBay is no longer doing them. I'm just using stock Penn frame posts. It would be nice for someone to make us a bunch

Thanks Sheridan. I do have the Newell reel you sent me a while back and will see if a seat fits. Funny thing is I was putting a 113 kit together as you were posting. These 3 piece yts frame kits are the last of the mohicans. Machining, polishing, and anodizing all the separate pieces is too costly to make any more feasible. I had Tom make the yts seats for 22 sets of spacer bars that are from my previous machinist and been collecting dust for 2+ years. I have 7 kits of each color(red, silver, black), and once those are gone I have no plans to make more. The yts seat can also be used with regular frame posts (99 width) in place of the spacer bars

Colors are silver,black and red.

Just put this black Cortez yts together

Hi Steve, good question !!

These seats have the tongue built in. My previous yts seats had separate tongues. I believe these are better having the seat and tongue as one solid piece, other than that they are the same dimensions etc

Not sure about SS, but Chui (Pro Challenger) also has aluminum bars for squidder / 100- I have a set on my Sal Special 100 which will soon have a Maxed Out stand. They are very nice. Alan has also been great to deal with- calls me to check on my orders and chastise me for having his pretty reels sitting on a shelf instead of fishing. That's changing :)

Ted's been sending me pics of this sweet project the last few days- I'm looking over inventory to see what else will be needing these jools.....

Back to Alan's question: as far as SS standard round posts, I think they are available stock from Mystic in the 99 width as they are used on new- manufacture 209's, which uses -66 width stand. I built a 99 thusly a couple months back with the new parts.

My testing phase is over now and I'm doubtful anyone will be disappointed with the new seats. I have very limited number of each size and color pictured. First come first served. The 501 seat is $42, the 99 width seat is $44, and 500 width is $46. add $4 shipping inside the USA. International shipping will be additional cost. Colors are black, red, and silver. These seats do not come with rod clamps. Tom H at Cortez Conversions is making us matching color rod clamps and should be available in next few weeks. Please keep in mind that my custom parts addiction is just a hobby and I'll be happy to break even on these. Also note that all my parts are USA made, polished, and anodized. This supports our local communities and economies. The 113yts kits (top left, and top right) will be on a separate thread

PM if interested

Thanks, Ted

I received my sets today, thank you Ted and thanks to Tom as well you both never disappoint.
I did not realize these are like the accurate, having the tongue machined from one piece...very nice touch Tom.
I don't want to tell you what to do, but after seeing these, you should start making them for all available reels.
I didn't get much time to assemble reels today, I did just one so far, but will post when I get the other kits done.
Here is one of the best looking Surfmaster100, pics don't do it justice, black is not easy to show:

If it did have the extra middle hole it still wouldn't fit a silver beach cause different screw pattern. The new seats only fit 2 screw applications. You can build a faster/stronger silver beach 99 by just doing a black sideplates jigmaster in 99 width. I do have the seat for that

I built mine out similar to Sal's, except I have Sal handle mine, and Sal gave me the spool :)

He is correct, pics don't really show how nice these are- match the Black Pearl's black spacers perfectly. I'm going to sand a few thous off some SS Philips head 5-40 1/2" I have to use in the quick change ring- the stock screws, while they have caught millions of fish with stock stands, don't seat very deeply, and Ted has given us a platform to really tighten it up. As advertised the seat also covers gear set. I'm really happy and have it on a stick going fishing tomorrow!

The new seats are not just for full customized reels. They are also a nice upgrade for many stock Penn models, like Sal's surfmaster.

The huge advantage the new seats have over the stock Penn seat is the ability to have much longer screws holding the seat, which is where most twisting occurs under a load. Here is an example: A Seaboy 190 with the old seat and stock short screws, and the extra long screws that I used to replace them.
Title: Re: New custom seats
Post by: Maxed Out on February 21, 2020, 01:14:49 AM
Now... back to more options. The Seaboy 190 is "99" width. Swap over to 500 width seat and 3/0 spool and result is its an extra wide Seaboy. These new seats fit Surfmaster, Baymaster, Jigmaster, Squidder, and many other conventional Penns

I'm working on a Surfmaster project, and I've already procured some longer screws to use with Ted's stand. The short screws in the pic below are stock...huge difference. What a fantastic piece Ted, the anodizing is perfect, looks nice and deep. 8)

Ted's trio, redux: 501, 99, 500 width seats from my man Ted- along with assorted other maxed out bling from him.

-506HS, 500S and my fav FrankenPenn- the 5009912259MaxedOutLongBeachJigLiveBaitMasterCaster

Pics don't do justice- these are the reel deal- beefy and great anodizing, my SS clamp hardware setups. I put them on builds with double ringed tail plate and solid bars so now the whole thing is beefy. Especially if you have builds with solid Newell bars, these tip the scale.

Dear John, we regret to inform you that the board of directors is issuing a mandatory recall of the new seats. Do not attempt to remove the seat to send back or this could cause mental anguish. Just ship all 3 reels back for a 25% refund. The new seats have been found to be responsible for a new "seat-reel virus 50199500" that has no known cure. Continued use of seat may also require reattachment of your lower jaw from time to time. Thanks

Very nice pair of Mag 10's Randy. The matching star is a nice touch !!

Oh, those Mag 10's!  :o The spacers for the base make it all possible.

To me the small reels are where it's at.   A Mag 10 holds more than enough braid for inshore bottom fishing (East Coast,) and makes a nice surf-caster.   This is why the Squidder Magnum is the holy grail.  I've never seen one, but if you can put Jigmaster gears in it (up to 5:1 retrieve) then you have a vintage reel that can do anything.

Of course besides red, purple-blue and black would also be nice.

Here's one of Ted's bases on a squidder.  The new Cortez conversion plates only have a whole for one bar which actually works out pretty good for going this route, I'm sure it's plenty strong.  This is a nice stout little reel, the clamp is handy as a hook keeper too

The huge advantage of the new seat is the ability to use much longer screws.

For those that are using stock jigmaster, squidder,or surfmaster sideplates with this new seat, here is what I do.

The quick take apart side uses tapered flathead to sit flush in the ring and not bind the quick take apart feature. I use a long screw from a 113H and file the head down slightly.

On the taiplate side I also use longer screws to secure the seat. These are standard screws found on most conventional Penns. Notice the difference in length from the stock seat screw.

Thank you Mo for the picture. The 309 is often overlooked and under appreciated. It's basically a jigmaster 99 with a levelwind. The body of the spool is a 112h(different shaft), and the main gear is a 500 with a lb60 pinion for 3/1 ratio. A very strong capable reel that never gets the attention it deserves. Mo has done a nice tutorial on the 309, and he also fishes them.

309 has caught more leadcore stripers in my lake than all other reels combined. Not just me, I mean ever. Perfectly holds a full spool of 36lb lead core plus 30 yards of mono.

When I was a kid every old fart on the river had a few crusty 309s...that reel has caught billions of fish. Whether you like levelwinds or not, you can't deny the success of Penn Peer series. 8)
Title: Re: New custom seats for jigmaster, squidder, surfmaster, etc
Post by: thorhammer on January 20, 2022, 01:37:11 PM
Trolling leadcore: 309
Downrigger: 209 or 210
Live shad: 9 and mag 10.

I prolly have 50 Peers. More, counting the Mags and those missing LW's I keep for parts. They are still the standard on my lake. Most durable thing going at their retail for what they do, and until recently easy enough to find used stuff under $30 bucks, for which there was no equal.  I have switched off to 330 GTI on leadcore but that's a functiuon of the bigger levelwind guide for knot to pass through. If I get off my can and start serve splicing like I should, I'll go back to 309. Smaller profile, plenty of drag.

Tom is your guy

CortezConversions.com

Look in "custom Penn parts" for shift levers, and "custom parts" for blades. He also has really nice knobs to go on the blades.

If you're looking for "maxed out" style shift levers, Tom has a section for those also.

I also have blades with the bft engraved.

Hey, thanks for replying so quickly Ted!
I'll be completely upfront with you I don't know a lot about these kits or upgrades!
I just acquired a 146Land a 140L, both in super nice shape!
Kind of hard not to notice all these beautiful kits!
And then, I see side plates by themselves
as well!
I thought I saw a blue 146 kit on here but now I can't find it!
So it looks like you can actually go with sideplates, stands and bars or go with some type of kit, for some of these reels!
I guess depending on availability?
As I said, I don't know all the ins and outs yet lol!

I was doing a little research on this!
Although it is absolutely beautiful and built like a tank, I think it's just overkill, for what I'll be doing!
I do fish for sharks in the surf, but do truly believe this belongs on a boat!
I only get out on a boat to use something like this once or twice a year, if I'm lucky enough too!
I also noticed that some others here are very interested in this, and probably deserve to have a chance at it before me!
I didn't realize this is the Magnum that everybody's been talking about lol!
I really do appreciate, you taking the time to respond to me and will probably kick myself later, but I am going to have to respectfully decline!
I'm sure it will not be sitting here long at all!
Thank you again for your time, sir!

The stands are a sweet upgrade; I prolly have a dozen at least. They also lower the reel on the rod besides being stronger and looking really cool. 99 width spacer bars, Camo grips and red and black blades also from Ted; as well as the hard-to find Motive Fab SS blade. Red is 500S; Left is 506 conversion, right is the 12590099 Livebaitsurfjigmasterlongbeachcaster. I don't even recall what all I put in that reel...it's like Johnny Cash's One piece at a time....

Hello Eugene, I have a couple jigmaster seats, but no 113h seats. I'm hoping Tom will make some in the near future
