Title: Starfire, Monday July 13th, 2020 - FULL!!!!!!!!
Post by: alantani on June 09, 2020, 09:29:36 PM
gentlemen, the clubhouse will be open on saturday, july 11th, 2020.  the starfire is scheduled for a full day trip, limited load of 20 anglers for $130.  i just signed up so there are now 19 spots left.  big tim, his sons and their friends will be making up a group of six.  there are 7 beds/bunks that will be assigned by age.  kids, even 30 year old kids, will likely be sleeping on the floor.  we obviously can't fill the cayucos house with 20, but it would be a riot to fill the boat!!!!!  sign up here!

Everybody double check.  There are 9 of us so far. There should be 11 spots available,  but the website says there are 12.  Someone is not confirmed.

we will likely be fishing 300 feet.  that's electric reel territory for me.  i also sent a text to have the deckhands get us a 25 to 50 pound block of squid so they don't have to cut it up.

Rob

very simple.  medium weight rod and reel, 65 pound braid, swivel, 2-hook shrimpfly rig (i have a bunch), 1 pound weight.  hang a whole squid by the pointy end, send it down, count to five and get bit!!!!!   ;D

Post by: alantani on June 10, 2020, 08:00:44 PM
yeah, the treble and j-hook trap rig is a single leader with a slider for the weight, set up like a carolina rig.  it's fine for shallow water.  for deep water, they get tangled up too much.  i'll have a bunch of trap rigs, also, though i doubt that we will use them.

basically, bring a couple of medium weight rods and reels with 65 pound braid and a half dozen 1 pounds lead torpedo weights.  you'll do fine.  there will be no shortage of tackle.

50 pound is fine.  it's just that 65 gives you a little extra abrasion resistance.  you just don't want to use 30.  i know guys use 40 and they do fine, but that's getting spooky thin.

thanks, i'll let you know about the squid.  probably i'll just have the boat get it for us and we can pay the deckhand directly.  i don't think they are going to care.  they know our group and they know the tips will be taken care of.

also..............

i'm going to talk to hank's tackle box about putting out a couple of tables of rods, reels and misc. stuff to sell to you guys on sunday.  there is a ton of tackle that is not listed.  randy, if you want to bring some stuff from vintage offshore tackle to sell, that would be great.  thanks!!!!

Snuck out of work today with Jose Cuervo for a crab combo trip on the hulicat. The wife and I are dying for some fresh crab.
And who should show up and win the derby. Just our own chief in residence. Mr A.T. Himself. And after schooling us all on the finer art of rock fishing he appears to be the winner with only two fish left in contention he remains the big fish of the day.

So, good ohana company, a possible kegger, BBQ, camping in the yard, deeper water cod fishing!, fresh fish, maybe some more partying... I believe I like the sound of that kind of a weekend.  8) I doubt my doctor does, though.

Just a thot:  three of us will carpool down the coast from Vallejo to Pacifica to Montery to Morro Bay.  Maybe put together a fun road trip mix.  Recommendations?  Open to all genres.  Maybe start off with Lil Nax X featuring Billy Ray Cyrus in Old Time Road.  The video cracks me up!  Hopefully it's ok to post this link up(?)  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w2Ov5jzm3j8

Title: covid concerns
Post by: alantani on July 05, 2020, 05:21:25 PM
been following this......

the boat should be fine.  the concern is the house.  the relative risk is probably extremely low, but it is never zero.  that being said, for now i will keep the house open and let those that want to go mask up at the house, or get hotels and just catch us at the boat.

and, actually, the decision might be made for us.  the boat is open for now but could easily close this week at the whim of someone at san luis obispo county health.  stay tuned......

Thanks, Alan --

I will be cancelling my reservation tomorrow or Tuesday -- so if someone wants my spot -- it will be open.

Unless we can reschedule for later in the year (Oct-Nov) -- then I will not ask for a refund -- just keep it in place so that everyone (Ohana) can also be on the trip if we reschedule.  Way too many unknowns right now -- personal decisions, respect or not for others, social distancing, politics -- even the Medical Professionals have seldom, if ever explored this landscape before.  We have a responsibility to protect our families, ourselves, our friends and neighbors, and the general public we may come into contact with.  Only each one of us can make these choices -- we need to rely on what we are absolutely comfortable with -- not others influences, ideas, or viewpoints.  Words are not an All-Clear -- verification and experience are the deciders, at least for me.

And it looks as if things are getting worse -- and we are only in the first 1/3 of this expected pandemic process.

Things have been allowed to open up too quickly -- without regulations or enforcement.

Profit motives, trying to get back to a normal, inconvenience, and much more.

This is just not only true for California -- it is everywhere, depending on opinions and motives.

Best, Fred

Alan, can you give a newbie a lay of the land, backyard-wise speaking? I am trying to do my part to social distance and am looking to stay outside. It might be my only 'camping trip' of the year.  ::)

I have a cot and I just ordered a pop up bug net thingy, and I'll toss a tarp over that for dew mitigation.

Are there any trees for shade, or if one wanted to hang a hammock?

I figure a camp chair and a shade hat, some keg beer and good BBQ should do me just fine, the fishing will be a bonus.

Let me know what Dave and I can bring. I have a quart of Bookbinders cocktail sauce for the house so far.

Are any of these fine gents that will be there a BARBER ???  ::)

I hope the trip stays a go.

Rob

room #1 - a pair of twin beds

room #2 - a king

room #3 - a twin

room #4 - twin bunk beds, one on top of the other

room #5 - the living room and dining area, with a couch, two recliners and floor space.

no sleeping in the backyard.  it's all hard dirt and weeds.  i may bring my excursion and sleep in the back.  i know that some guys are getting hotel rooms.  there should be enough room for all of us.  my big request is to be mindful of the neighbors.  one in particular is an old lady across the street.  i have yet to meet her but i will make sure i do so this weekend.  i would rather have her call me than the cops!!!!

For one of the few times I agree with Fred & I agree with Fred more than you think. I am 100% OK with going fishing, every man for themselves. But what I worry about today is the fact that we are going to have 20 people from 20 different homes from 20 different parts of the state meeting at one house to party ... I have not seen my son for over 2 months and he just had to quarantine for 14 days because of a covid-19 interaction, #### means different things when #### hits close to home.  I approached Alan about 10 people paying $200.00 each to charter the boat & it turned into this? I'm not so sure I'm OK with this party. We need to tighten things up a bit or I'm going pull to the plug on my end...I need to see my son, and he is 100% on the same page with me.

I agree with Alan, theres plenty of room on the boat to social distance and say hey to everyone and have a good time but the house is another story.  we will plan on our meals and sleeping away from the house.
see ya'll on the boat.

Just to be clear -- you guys need to stay safe.

Speaking for myself, this is not about fear -- or being macho, or headstrong.  It is about a responsibility to respect and make sure that we do not put other's health in jeopardy -- even if only a perception on their part.

Sue & I have been social distancing for 4 months now -- It is easier for us than many others.  We live in a remote area of the mountains -- are semi-retired -- are prepared and stocked up -- and have great online resources.  For those working full-time -- those with young kids at home -- folks running businesses -- it is much, much harder.  I understand and appreciate that.

Here is a quick article in our local paper today -- that is pretty much indicative of what is going on around the country -- whether or not we choose to believe that there is an issue with Covid, or not --

Everyone on this site -- and their families, are very important to me -- please stay safe by using common sense -- whether this trip happens -- or not.  Or is rescheduled for a later, safer time.

Best, Fred

OPINION

'Because of my stupidity.' COVID-19 victim's last words a lesson for all Californians

BY THE SACRAMENTO BEE EDITORIAL BOARD
07/03/2020

The past few weeks will go down in history as some of the most disastrous in California history.

After an unwise and unscientific rush to reopen the state, COVID-19 infections are spiking in California, including here in Sacramento. The California miracle has become the California nightmare. We bent the curve and avoided the worst-case scenario in March, April and May with an unprecedented statewide stay-at-home order.

Then, our leaders surrendered. Bowing either to political pressure or to scientifically dubious optimism, they initially refused to impose a mask requirement to help prevent the spread of the virus. Then, with no mask rule in place, they rushed to reopen bars, restaurants and churches before it was safe. They also refused to enforce the rules or crack down on flagrant violations.

The result of this failure of leadership was entirely predictable. Crowds packed the bars and restaurants. Families gathered for barbeques and parties. Martial arts gyms reopened without physical distancing or masks.

To be clear, most Californians did their part to protect public health by wearing masks, avoiding crowds and following public health rules. Unfortunately, some people dropped their guard, disregarded warnings and, for a brief moment, seemed to be enjoying a summer without consequences.

Until now. Infections are now surging in Sacramento County, where officials reported 1,000 new cases last week and Intensive Care Unit (ICU) beds have become scarce. Nearly 6,000 Californians have died of the virus, and the number will continue to rise.

None of this is surprising. Anyone who had paid close attention to what had happened in other places that reopened too quickly saw this coming. Other countries and states that prematurely reopened also saw infections spike.

On May 29 this Editorial Board warned Sacramento residents against risking their lives by venturing out.

"Please don't be fooled by the sudden wave of reopening restaurants, stores and salons around Sacramento," we wrote. "COVID-19 still stalks California. It will infect and kill many more people before this pandemic ends."

We noted that one local establishment "had patrons at every table and a crowd at the bar." We noted that the governor's mixed messages about the seriousness of the pandemic were confusing people. We noted that Lassen County had been forced to close down again after its rushed reopening resulted in a spike in infections.

"We are definitely headed in that direction, and the next four weeks will be pretty interesting," Dr. Lisa Barcellos, a UC Berkeley epidemiologist, told us at the time.

West Sacramento Mayor Chris Cabaldon called Yolo County's plans to reopen "a clear danger" to his city. He said California didn't have the testing and contact tracing capabilities necessary to reopen safely.

And here we are: Shutting down again as infections spike.

Gov. Gavin Newsom, and Sacramento County Public Health Director Peter Beilenson, own the most responsibility for this unfolding catastrophe. At a time when COVID-19 still posed a serious threat to public health and safety, they gave the green light to reopen. Many people interpreted their actions as a signal that it was fine to relax and return to normal life. Newsom and Beilenson must learn from these mistakes and avoid repeating them. They must follow science and refuse to be cowed by political pressure.

The rising infections we see today are the direct result of their error and, once the deaths are counted, they will need to fully account for their terrible decisions. Our leaders are not, however, solely to blame for this deadly debacle. The people who crowded the bars, refused to wear masks or decided to hold parties in the middle of the deadliest pandemic in memory must also take a look in the mirror. The irresponsible actions of a few have set us all back. Some people will pay with their lives due to these lapses in judgment.

"I went out a couple of weeks ago ... because of my stupidity I put my mom and sisters and my family's health in jeopardy," wrote Thomas Macias, a 51-year-old truck driver from Southern California who got infected with COVID-19 after attending a party last month. "This is no joke. If you have to go out, wear a mask, and practice social distancing."

Macias died the day after he wrote this, according to NBC News, but his final words are the best advice you'll ever get.

Don't be stupid. Stay home. Avoid crowds. Wear a mask. Stay alive so that you – and your loved ones – can celebrate the day this coronavirus nightmare finally ends.

Yesterday's post from SLO Cnty Health Director is expecting the county to be placed on the CA Watchlist.  I compared their #'s to ours, up here in Solano:

san luis obispo cnty (2018 pop: 284,010),  43 new cases overnt, expecting to be added to CA Cnty Watchlist.  This is relative to solano cnty (2018 pop: 446,610)  70 new cases/day from 7/2-7/5.

https://www.slocounty.ca.gov/Departments/Health-Agency/Public-Health/Department-News/COVID-19-Updates/Officials-Say-SLO-County-Heads-for-State's-Watch-L.aspx

Like I told Alan, in light of this pandemic I did not plan to socialize or visit the clubhouse this yr.  That can wait.  I just plan to fish & wave 'hello' to yall, my extended family.  I've never fished out of Morro Bay & heard great things about it when conditions are right...Not to make light of the subject but this chat could use some music, one with an appropriate title(?)

I'm sorry to say that I am canceling out.  The weather forecast, while not great, is improved, but my wife would make things very unpleasant for me if I take any unnecessary risk of exposure to the virus, and to be honest, I am scared sh*%&!less about it too.  There are now two spots available on the boat, so if you know anyone who might want to go, please let them know.

With a very few exceptions, I have been nowhere besides the grocery store and the post office for the past four months.  I have only been fishing once since last year.  It looked like things were under control here in San Luis Obispo County for most of May and the first half of June, with an average of only 3 or 4 new cases per day, but we are now averaging ten times that many cases, and our death count has quadrupled over the past week (that's a little bit misleading as we only had one death up until we added three more this week), and the health department expects it to get even worse.

I hope that you guys knock 'em dead.  The fishing has been great, and the weather forecast seems to be getting nicer daily.  You might want to bring a lighter outfit, in addition to your deep water stuff, just in case they decide to fish inshore to get out of the wind.  Please be careful and protect yourselves and everyone near you, especially inside of Alan's house.

Randy
Randy sorry to hear you won't be joining us but i understand. I'll leave the rod and reel at Jerry's Marine for you to pick up and you can Paypal me whatever you think they're worth...

Will do PJ.  Jerry's is temporarily closed on the weekends and they close at 4:00PM on weekdays.  If you are not planning to be in town until Tuesday?  If not, I can call the Morro Bay Landing office and ask them if you can leave them there.

Thank you,

Randy

bringing some essentials, a big hunk of bluefin and some rice, maybe for tonight's dinner.  we're headed down in a few hours.  not sure about how many more guys. but there is a store nearby if we need anything.

if you are staying at the house, please bring a sleeping bag, pillow and towels.

for fishing, we will likely be fishing deep, like 200-300 feet.  that means 1 pound weights so that we all drift the same and not tangle each other up.  also, just a little hint.  simple double hook rigs like shrimp flies with squid will get you down fast, and it it is usually the guy that gets down fastest that gets bit first.

Alan,

As I type, Jennifer is making a childhood treat - Rice Krispy Treats!!!

Hermetically sealed in Saran wrap plus...   enough for all of us, the skipper and 2 crew members.

AND... Her double chocolate chip brownies - the reel ones, nothing funning going on here!!!!  We've had them before, they seem to be a fan favourite!!!

Again wrapped in Saran wrap.  She keeps a very clean kitchen ;D

I'll make a Sunday nite appetizer - shrimp in lime and garlic with a red cocktail sauce - I'll bring small cups we can use to keep our food to ourselves.

Also, will bring the Mark Mayo custom-made Fishy Scotch box, and some adult beverages for all to enjoy.

What else can I bring food wize????

Also, IF ANYONE needs a ride down, I leave from San Mateo, on Sunday after lunch with my wife,

and returning Tuesday after breakfast to San Mateo.

Let me know.

Wayne

Wayne/Jennifer Thank you for bringing the treats and supplying an appetizer!

I'm gonna pick up a couple tri-tips for the grill and possibly a tray of twice baked potatoes or some other side dish.

I think at this point maybe a salad to go along with dinner and we should be all set...but the more food the better!!!!

C everyone Sunday night!!!!

Had a great time meeting more of the Ohana.  Alan put me up in the single suite next to the laundry room. Food was fantastic and the spirits were taken in moderation. Everyone "looked" OK to drive in the O-Dark 30 hours to get to the landing. Check in was quick and painless, we boarded at 0600 hrs.  All gear was rigged and stowed and we were off.

I was surprised the Starfire was as quick as she was and within the hour we made our first drop.  A few of the youngsters obliged us with chumming the fish as we motored along. And for most of the morning.  🤢  We fished at 300' all day which provided some good arm/back workouts. Shrimp flies and whole squid were the hot ticket today. Almost every stop yielded good quality fish.  Alan's jackpot grouper had black spots on it. Never seen that before. I saw only one ling cod keeper, and 2 petrole, Jonathan landed a short ling first thing in the morning.

The Neptuna made its maiden voyage.  Worked great and even Wayne made a drop with it.  Next time it goes out I'm going to put an old school rail plate on it to make it more manageable for rock fish. I tied some shrimp flies and one of them is much worse for the wear and was really popular with the Rock cod.

Randy's door prize provided lots of laughs when it was opened 🤣🤣 Especially considering who won it.  😉. Looking forward to the next Starfire trip.  The 4 hour commute from Crestline wasn't too bad and I got home with enough daylight to clean the gear up before bedtime. The crew is continuing the party this evening, so all bets are off for who is able to drive in the AM.

The Starfire is a grand boat, we ran at 14 mph to the fishing grounds.  Wide with lots of interior seating and exterior covered seating.   Like a mini- San Diego Long Range boat!!!  I was impressed.   The two deckhands, BEST I've fished with.   PERIOD.

Jonathan brings his super narrow - 501 PURPLE P21XN TIB frame reel - RANDY if you are reading this, PLEASE FIND ONE FOR ME!!!!  SERIOUSLY!!!!   Larger arbor than my surfmaster 100 WHICH works perfectly for the day made line pick up from 300 feet just that much easier.

Here are Jonathan and PJ.  PJ's day job is to pluck guys like me from the backwoods.  His usual distress call is something like this... "64-year-old man, with a heart attack". PJ works on a helicopter either end of the rope.   Atop in the helicopter or on the bottom end assisting those that need help.

Here is Khanh, enjoying the sunshine!!!!!  This young man is a very accomplished fisherman and hunter.   Nice to spend the day on the rail with him, EVENTHOUGH he fowled my fishing line SEVEN TIMES!!!!!    When we brought up the fouled lines, Khanh had his one or two big Red's me ... NADA.

I'd like to add a few pics as well.  The bow was a little rougher but no less productive.  I pulled up 8 reds in a row, only one at 2lbs while the rest were well over 3lbs!  Alan paid us a visit up front after the capt called it a day.

Oops, sorry.  I dunno how to rotate these pics.  Anyway, this is Alan & my buddy, Brooke.  Note the burlap bag - Brooke nailed em with his jig & teaser combo.  In the end he came out with limits of red, at least 4 nice sized petrale sole, and at least one keeper ling.  My burlap bag that I loaned him mustv seen better days since it literally burst under the weight.  That's the kind of fishing we'd experienced!  My, oh my!!  Let's do it again!

Heading back to the landing with full bags and a great day of fun!!  Thank you, Alan, for the invite, and all who made the trip for making it a blast!  My family enjoyed the tastiest fresh reds we've ever had!

The last photo in my post was of Morro Rock looking through the anchor pulpit.....it'd be easier to see if it got turned 90 degrees

Just want to say what a great time I had, hanging out with everyone. Food was excellent, conversation was fun, people I've never met made me feel at home, Alan was gracious to let us pirates share the clubhouse, the Starfire is a great boat.   All the cool gear I saw fishing is going to give my wife a heart attack when I try to sneak it into the  house.  A better bunch of people you will be hard pressed to find.  Hopefully when this CV-19 is over more of the guys and gals can do this again.  Sign me up now in advance!  Bill

Hello and thanks to Everyone!...really fun trip, I appreciate everyone that put in the effort to organize it.  Great group to fish with everyone, even though I try to stick around the bow and out of everyone's way...Definitely will keep my eyes here, hope to cut my teeth on a socal tuna trip sooner or later.
