Hey everyone, long time Alan Tani follower, first time posting. I polish and customize lots of Penn reels, mostly greenies but I had a chance to do a international 30vsw. After assembly I'm having issues with the 2 speed mechanism. It's as if there's no tension to push or pull the correct gear all the way. If it's in high gear it's fine, switch to low most times in engages correctly, go back to switch it's like nothing moves the low gear fully out of position and it just binds up as both gears are kind of engaged. Give it a good shake and you can get the low gear ot move all the way out of the way. I'm at a loss and don't know what to look for anymore.
I can't figure out how to get a pic in the post but if anyone is willing to help I can send a short video clip of what is happening.
This might be the issue, Erich --
As reel mechanics, we are taught to use a wrench by torquing it as a general rule --
These Gold International 2-spds are a little different --
Here is an explanation from Scott at Mystic about a common shift issue --

BTW, Welcome!
Best,
Fred
Thank Fred, no it's not that. Tines are good, button moves in and out with ease. It's the gears themselves that are not moving correctly it appears.
Hi Erich, could it be to much thick grease, maybe, take it apart again, make sure every part is in the correct position, make sure it is lubed well, but with thinner grease, good luck, stay safe, & welcome to this great community nice to have you with us, cheers from Sunny Western Australia, Don.
Make sure the 128A is installed correctly, you should be able to read "top" which was added about a decade ago. Make sure the 134 slides in and out of the gears with ease. Make sure the 171 is fully tight. Lastly make sure the 172A and all the others parts are installed in the correct order.

I posted a video on how to service the 50VSX shifting mechanism. I'm sure it's pretty much the same as yours.
